View Full Version : Did I pay too much for this Mazda 3 or did I get a decent deal?

Bought from dealer.
2004 Mazda 3s
103,000 Km
Power everything, including moonroof
Very good condition
No rust- except a minimal amount underneath- overall good condition
Only needs very minor work to certify

Car bought for $5700 +HST at dealer *as is*

Dad is a mechanic so he is going to be getting it certified.

It was $5999 but I talked him down to $5700. I am wondering if I still got a good price for this vehicle.
I live in Northern Ontario.

That is all. Thanks

I would say you paid a price which is on the fairway; not in the rough or sand or anything like that. I used to own a 2007 Mazda 3 with 65,000 km and they gave me a TIV of $7k and resold for $11k.

Yours has low kms and I kind of like the color :dunno:

I would be more concerned of the "little things" that are needed (and can develop into big things $$$) to pass inspection.

is it auto or manual?

:dunno: Youre asking this from a Calgary car guys' group and youre from Sudbury? (completely different car markets)

If you were from Calgary, yea you got hosed. A 2004 Mazda 3 sedan with 82k is LISTED on Kijiji for 4500$ - which means you could get it for 4000$ if youre good at negotiating.

Also we have no hoser sales tax (HST) on PRIVATE vehicle purchases in AB. 5700$ x+ 14% = 6500$

No rust on the fender flares, spoiler etc though? This one has no rust where they tend to rust. That is the big question. Ohhh I had no idea I was in the Calgary section, my bad.

Edit: I just looked at the ad. Its a manual-not like that makes much of a difference, and its starting to rust out in those spots I mentioned. Can be over $1000-2000 in body work and get worse with time if you don't fix it.

Its auto with ability to shift. I would be using the manual only.

the novelty of shifting in an automatic car wears out faster than you think.

I dont think you got "hosed", but you wouldn't spend that much if it was a private sale. Looks to be in really good shape though I would expect it to be 100% certified and ready to go from a dealer. :dunno:

In calgary, you might have found it for $4k or less.

As said, you didn't get hosed, but you definitely could have gotten a better deal. When a dealer advertises it at $6g, you probably could have gotten it for $5g

You already bought the car...it's a little too late to worry if it's a good deal or not.

Also shifting without a clutch is so incredibly lame, it is a mixture of hilarity and pity to see somebody who has an automatic go “look at me, I am shifting” *clickity clickity click* with whatever lame placebo control the automatic has. Yes look at you go, those are some super special skillz you have there, better get you a protective racing helmet and mouth guard that you can wear around all the time.

If you want a manual car buy one with 3 pedals.

But I can't get a Ram 1500 with a manual transmission...

Actually my dad knows a dealer and he said that 5700 was way too much and I'm getting ripped off. This guy is going to find me the same car, maybe even newer year for cheaper.

We'll today my dad talked to an auto dealer he knows and the guy told us that I am getting ripped off apparently. He seems to be confident that he can find me a mazda3 - newer year for a good price. :/ so I forfeited the deal with the other car dealer. I trust my dad's opinion and his trust in this other guy.

Ok I already clarified that I put an offer in on the car. Secondly, I live in a town that doesn't have many Mazda 3's for sale and the ones that are for sale are rust buckets. It took my dad half a day to ponder the price. He thought it was a good deal at first but then got to thinking. He then asked the auto dealer he used to work for and got an answer.

I bet it is rusting and just blends into the colour really well. Those cars are notorious for their rust issues... It's there, just hiding on you!

Don't forget to check the tires. Those don't look very useful in a northern Ontario winter.

No my dad checked. He did hide one or two spots but it was nothing. And it also wasn't in the trouble areas.

Just to give you an idea, back in June I bought 2 2004 Mazda 3's...the first is a grey GT sedan with 225,000km, rust on rear fender and a few small spots around sunroof, paid $4600...the second is a blue GT hatch with non noticeable hail damage, 175,000km with the same rear fender rust....paid $4000. Didn't do accident checks on either but the grey GT got checked when i was thinking about trading it in, had 3 accidents to the back of the car in it's early life. I've bought separate steelies with winters for both and I think theyre bother realistically worth about 4,000 each...

5600 PLUS GST on top of that out of your pocket, ya that's a rip off...but that's what you get, dealer's running a business, they need profit, I bought mine privately.

That's why you man up and get the 2500 with the Cummins. You can still get it with a stick and you don't even have to pick some crappy base model to get it. I know because I just ordered a full load Laramie with a 6 speed today.

I was just thinking about it too, until I ran across a ridiculous deal (way under invoice) that changed 'just thinking' to 'take my money now'. If you're serious about a similar truck, PM me and I'll fill you in. I wouldn't have believed just how cheap it was until today.

My bad I thought I was on a mazda forum. I guess you clearly have something against them. Yes they tend to rust...doesnt mean its a POS car. You see some rust, you get rid of it completely right away, you don't leave it there. If you don't take care of your car it won't take care of you. Im sure my dad isn't going to let me buy a car infested with rust. I changed my mind about the deal, therefore I didn't buy it. Get over it.
