So guys, what were the working conditions like? Was it worth it? And did you see anything beyond camp life and work? It was great working conditions. The company provided us with our own hotel rooms with fireplaces, we got amazing meals for breakfast and dinner and bagged lunch. We got brand new suburbans. The conditions were cold as fuck some days and cold the others, -20 days with no wind was tshirt weather for most. The company that provided the work was accomodating, the group of guys for the most part were excellent to work with. We got to all go dog sledding which was amazing, I was lucky enough to lose grip while being pulled and fell off the sled, the dogs have quite some power.

the cold sucks but like anything else it's what you make of it. I prefer that cold vs. the heat of working in the jungle in Cuba. They both suck but in cold everybody kinda gets it and there is always ways to warm up, in the crazy humid heat there is no way to cool down and the locals all seem to just keep going.

I agree, cold you can at least dress for as well. Hot, you could be naked and still just have to deal with.

I had a blast up there, and almost everyone was from beyond so it made it fun to chat with a bunch of car guys the whole time. Made a few good friends

On Ice Pilots they're saying it was the coldest winter in years. Probably not the best source :nut: I'm curious now I'll look it up.

Very cool Place to be, I did a lot of quality control and inspection work for IOL Norman Wells and loved it up there. Canadian North is probably the best airline I have ever flown, service wise ( I haven't been up in a few years now) but for their means they are served on glass dishes and you get real metal forks and knives to eat with.

If any of you guys get a chance to go up there in the other seasons I highly suggest it, The Mackenzie during break up is cool, and the summers are a blast. 24 hours of sunlight, +30 deg temperatures. Norman Wells has a great little lake up behind the dump that is great for swimming and rafting, The Mackenzie is also awesome for fishing and boating. I am not sure but if you ask around town there may still be a guy up there that does plane tours of the area, he tour is about an hour, and he only asks for $40 o cover his fuel. He takes you over some abandoned military camps from the 40s when they were trying to build a pipeline to Alaska for the war but abandoned all heir equipment, vehicles, campsites when the war ended. It is lie going through a time machine.

I used to go up every year during both summer and winter between 2004 and 2008. Almost every time, it was -50 BEFORE the wind chill and I had to walk to work since my boss was too cheap to pay for a taxi LOL. I stayed at the Ducklake apartments (close to the Post Office which had an electronic sign outside reminding me how cold it was) and had to walk to the north end of town.. Yeah it was chilly to say the least. In Feb, the sun would never peak over the horizon. It was pitch dark until around noon, then look like sunrise until 3, and be pitch dark again. Some days I slept until 11 because I kept thinking it was 6 LOL.

Inuvik is so far north that you actually look SOUTH to see the Northern Lights LOL. I loved going up there in the winter way more than summer when the place gets infested with mosquitoes and such. My favorite place was Fort Good Hope; an absolutely beautiful community, very friendly and amazing locals unlike some of the other small communities.

Sigh... I actually do miss going up there LOL. Is the Pizza Hut still in the Northern store? I couldn't believe what they charged for a pizza hahaha.

Great thread and great pics. This is why I keep reading Beyond, for stories like this. Nice for one member to help other members out with jobs and experiences like this, you are to be commended IMO.

I don't know what it is about the North and the Arctic, but I like many others it looks like am fascinated by it, particularly the work and society there.

I'm sure Jutes has some pretty interesting stories about Russian interceptions and the goings on up there, that'd be worth another thread all of its own.

There is a lot to see in the pics in this thread, a lot of little details that one can pick up on. One obvious thing was the fuel prices, unreal. Great dog team pictures as well, I'd really like to hear and see more about this up there. The thread really has it all, Ice road truckers and Ice pilots interludes to boot.

Good times.

If you're a smoker, the price of a premium pack of 25's for players, or dumarier/export a was about $18-19. Milk was double what it is here.

I've spent some time north of Fort Nelson in the winter, and while still hundreds of miles south of Inuvik, it's a lot like what's pictured. The Ravens are insane, and once they find a source of food, they'll hang around pretty much all winter.

Ice roads are also kinda trippy. I've never been on "the" ice road that's in those shows, but a lot of my drilling locations are on frozen muskeg. Drive for an hour, and only see one hill. Speeds are kind of misleading. Gotta pay attention, because you can end up driving a lot faster than you think. Almost mesmerizing.

Had a rig start to sink in that stuff one spring, that's alarming, as ice is pretty flexible up to a point, but it can be brittle when stressed. Everyone was wondering how deep the water was there . . . Didn't sink the rig though, thank goodness. I think I put that on my performance review for the year: "Did not create any semi-submerisble rigs in NEBC - Achieved"

I was born in Inuvik. :D

Spent 5 years there then moved to Yellowknife and spent 14 years there. Moved here in 09.

Haven't been back to Inuvik since '95 but saw a lot of familiar sights. Ingamo hall, DEW line radar dome, utilidors, houses on stilts, etc.

Surprised you took a pic of the mosque but not the big ass igloo church. :)

I'll probably go up for a visit some time in the next couple years. Gotta visit during that sweet spot between winter and summer before the bugs come.

Yeah, but it was nice since there wasn't really a whole lot to do, we barely filled our evenings. There was talk about getting a few days off but I was grateful we didn't get any, I'm not the type of person that does well when there's nothing to do. Might not have finished before Christmas if we had days off as well.

Farthest north I've been is Norman Wells a couple times, both in the summer. Two completely different jobs. First was doing electrical upgrades in the Esso plant and "islands" and the second was a research gig with the government, flying around in helicopters and hiking for a month and a half. Incredible place where you actually feel like you're in the unspoiled wilderness.

Couple other friends have done research on Ellesmere Island and would love to go back. The Arctic doesn't get enough credit. Now saying that, I doubt I'd live there fulltime But I'd go back in a heartbeat.
