Not sure how many of you will remember this but this was my go to media player back in the day.

Winamp shutting down after over 15 years

The famous media player Winamp will shut down next month, over 15 years after its initial release. Though Winamp eventually lost popularity, in the late 90s and early 2000s it was one of the go-to media players for listening to local music or radio streams. In 2002, Winamp's maker, Nullsoft, was acquired by AOL for over $80 million in stock, where it's remained in development until now. A Mac and an Android version were even released in recent years, though they never found the same fan base that its customizable Windows client did.

No reason is given for Winamp's shutdown, but its popularity has certainly waned: simple, built-in audio solutions like iTunes are now ubiquitous across platforms, making Winamp a far more specialized app. In a retrospective published last year, Ars Technica reported that Winamp had existed for years on life support, but that those involved didn't believe it was dead yet. Now that it's nearly gone, those who want to relive old time should head over to Winamp's site before December 21st, when it'll no longer be available — its famous motto, of course, will always live on somewhere.

I remember running Winamp on a 75Mhz Pentium.

It really whipped the llama's ass.

Remember my listening to my first MP3 (downloaded over AOL 56K dial-up) back in the day on Winamp. It was a DMX song featuring Marilyn Manson. Gonna miss it cuz I still use it lol.

Nice, I used a Pentium I, 133 MHz system up until 2003 and Winamp was one of the most used programs I had on there

It had 8 MB of ram, and it cost $400 to upgrade to 64 MB haha

I have a copy of Winamp on cd somewhere v1.0 or something VERy early.

This is going to suck because it was my go to player. Guess now FooBar is going to gain a ton of popularity VERY fast.

I still use it exclusively to this day, and have my skins from day one. The Geiss visualization plug-in mesmerizes me.

I remember rocking WinAmp a long time ago!

Especially when Napster, Morpheus, LimeWire were still alive.

Way before video streaming, when audio streaming was in its infancy, I remember taking over winamp radio with a Tyson vs Hollyfield PPV broadcast. That night we set new records for Shoutcast radio usage, where 94% of all listeners were tuned into our broadcast, and most servers pointed to us to act as a node for the broadcast.

I still use an older version of it on my Windows XP machine, I love it for the simplicity of use and how fast it loads up.

First machine I ever used it on was a P75 too, I really miss those early net days sometimes.

What does everyone use for their basic media player now??

I used Winamp for everything back in the day but now I pretty much just use Windows Media Player.

I was still using Winamp up until a couple years ago when my work computer got switched to a Mac. I think I still have an early version of 1.x somewhere too.

I still run winamp! Sunofabitch. That's a shame, I've used them since 1998. I remember getting it off a maximum PC CD lol.

I always liked it because it was low load compared to WMP back in the days of 64 mb of ram lol.

Is AOL trying to hoard some cash by not keeping it in development to defend itself from James2013?? :dunno:

ICQ was done when they had their server nukes or whatever it was. I lost my ICQ number long ago because there was some server issues or something not sure.

I do still remember my ICQ number tho.

This! It's still the best music program out there. However, I'm still using v2.8. And they are up to something like 7.5 now? The new versions suck! Keep it simple!

I use it all day every day at work and at home any time I listen to music. I hate Windows Media Player and won't use it for anything. To bad, I guess I'll just have to keep the download file on my computer and remember the good old days.
