Kid #2 is due in a few weeks, so it was time to get my son out of his crib and into a bed.

Bought an HO scale model (thanks to Go4long for pointing me in the right direction), took some calipers to it and started planning.

End product is about 400 lbs, modular (comes apart with allen keys), and has working headlights. I have interior LED strip lighting ready to go in, but have to pick up some protective diffusers before installing it. It fits a twin mattress, so he can take it to college if he wants

Also made a flat car step stool for it out of the scrap materials.

That is insanely awesome!!!! Your kid must really love trains (or you do...).

Either way, thats impressive.

Wow...

normally i'm against themed beds (such as thomas the train, disney cars, etc...) but wow... this is an exception.

Looks great!

Were you planning to round off the corner of the guard and pad it?

Took a few full saturdays to do the big cuts in the garage, and then moved my stuff in the basement to be able to work after he went to bed.

He really doesn't seem to care about Thomas, he seems to prefer real trains and, I figured this one would take longer to grow out of.

No way I'm rebuilding one of these, the angles on the nose were horrible to do. Lots complicated angles and getting things to line up properly was a real bitch. Next bed I make will have to be standard angles like 30/45/90°, not 17° with a 9° bevel.

Nope. It's got a 1/8" round on it, that's safe enough

The first picture looks like a computer generated image. If that would have been the only picture you posted I would have thought that you just flanged that up in a graphics design program. Well done sir.
