View Full Version : What can be wrong with my SUV

I've tried searching online but I cannot find anything specific on it. I'll continue looking but maybe Beyond can help me out with a quicker answer.

When I drive my 2007 Mercedes-Benz ML-500 (w164), the engine seems to not engage to the transmission. I think the engine is fine because the rpm's still go up. What I have to do to get it to start working again is to restart the vehicle.

What seems to be the problem? Am I right by saying that there's something wrong with the computer that has to do with the transmission?

Thanks in advance.

It happens suddenly while the car is being driven (accelerated) and also during traffic light stops. When it stops midway of acceleration, the car's transmission stops being engaged and requires the car to be restarted. For clarification, the car also needs to be restarted when it stops working at traffic lights.

When I move the shifter (Neutral, Drive, Reverse) it does not help the car engage the engine to the transmission. Also, nothing about the problem shows up on the vehicle status indicator screen.

I may have just solved my problem by self diagnosing it. Best bet is to bring it to Mercedes or a reputable shop that deals with Benz's.

not sure about the newer MLs but with the W163's there is a circuit board inside the transmission that has two speed sensors which fail and can cause this symptom. it mounts between the valve body and the transmission accessed via the oil pan.

not an expensive part nor hard to change. but not sure about the newer MLs may only be available from the stealer....

Okay, awesome that helps. Yeah dang those stealerships! I will bring it there, tell them about the problem and mention about this circuit board on the older models and if it's the same issue with my vehicle. Get it diagnosed and then check other Benz specialists for their estimates. Thank you!!

valve body info (https://jayauto.wordpress.com/2011/06/25/mercedes-benz-will-not-sell-valve-body-for-mercedes-722-9-transmission/)

looks like your likely to only be able to fix this at the dealer...I'd call them before hand and ask the price to replace this as im sure they would try to upsell you a complete transmission...no need to remove the transmission to fix this. They should be able to diagnose it first by pulling the codes from the transmission. likely seen this alot although they wont say that lol

conducter plate/valve body is likely the issue and they seem to only sell them together and then they need to reprogram the computer...

for my ML I can repkace the conductor plate (circiit board) for about $250 with fluid...

That's awesome m10-power, I will definitely run that by the dealer. It seems very likely that it is indeed the conductor plate/circuit board.

Thank you for your good advice and your time!
