My dad travels to tropical places a lot, and loves to scuba/freedive. Last year I got him a diving knife for Xmas and this year I'm thinking about getting him a 4' spear gun. Question is, would that be a pain in the ass, or even allowed, in checked in luggage?

I started to write a smartass response with something about taking it as carry-on, but I just couldn't do it man. :D

It all depends on two things, firstly the air carrier themselves, and secondly, the country upon which you wish to enter.

For example, WestJet do currently accept spear guns. They must have their CO2 cartridge removed, and they must be packed securely in checked in baggage. It is up to you though to check if the country you're entering will allow you to enter with them though.
