View Full Version : Mexican thieves steal radioactive waste.

Yeah, so this happened:

After a two-day hunt, a stolen truck containing the lethal radioactive material cobalt 60 was found in the rural Mexican town of Hueypoxtla. Mexican nuclear safety authorities suspect the carjackers likely did not know they were absconding with the deadly material, but will probably pay for it with their lives. The cobalt 60 had been removed from its casing, suggesting that the perpetrators were exposed to high doses of radiation.

The missing shipment of radioactive cobalt-60 was found Wednesday near where the stolen truck transporting the material was abandoned in central Mexico.

The highly radioactive material had been removed from its container, officials said, and one predicted that anyone involved in opening the box could be in grave danger of dying within days.

The cobalt-60 was left in a rural area about a kilometre from Hueypoxtla, a farm town of about 4,000 people, but it posed no threat to the residents and there was no evacuation, Eibenschutz said.

Maybe they thought the waste would turn them from drug dealers to radioactive super drug dealers ?

They will most likely die or get severe amputation cobalt-60 is nothing to mess with we barely use it that much in radiography and it's shielded by about 400 pounds of material.

Depending on the size of the cobalt ball it could potentially store a good half of the nuclear radiation of a nuke after explosion.

Cobalt 60 is nasty when irradiated. Nickel 67 is just as nasty. Gold is radiation-proof. Although noones ever estimated it, a 5-gram nickel if made with nickel 67 could probably irradiate a whole city block.

Lead is also radiation proof in itself, but to use it as a shield - you need a good six inches of it to be sure (at least three tons to shield one human body)

Its useful to know *afterall* if you are planning on a nuclear zombie invasion, a pandemic zombie invasion, worthless US dollar zombie invasion, or 30-foot tidal wave zombie invasion.

dun dun duhhh.

Gotta transport with what ya got.

Technically, the US will have to guard that waste repository for the next million years. I would want to be paying the guard tab on that one, lol.

Yeah, technically. But don't they deem it "safe" after a 100 years?

The amount of exposure to Co60 to cause tissue damage requiring amputation is well within the lethal dose amount.

If these guys held the material for 30 seconds or more, they are certainly dead.

We used Co60 to radiograph through 8 inches of steal.

Yeah, but if Sugarphreaks picture is accurate, the thieves probably had no idea what was in the crate. Doesn't even look like there's radioactive signs on it, lol.

but what if... none of them die?!

Of the detained men, ages 16 to 38, only the 16-year-old showed signs of radiation exposure and he was in good health, a spokeswoman for Hidalgo's Health Department said on condition of anonymity because she isn't allowed to discuss the case.

or it was a ploy to scare the shit out of them so they would go seek treatment and get busted? :dunno:

The more I read into this, the more it seems fishy to me. Or maybe this entire thing is blown out of proportion by media outlets north of the border.

Can't lie; I'm pretty disappointed. There's something pretty amazing about the idea of radioactive karma.

It is tragic the risks that poverty can force some folks to take.

It's not like these were rich kids stealing so they could upgrade to the lastest iPhone.

Probably some poor bastards trying to feed their kids.

I don't understand if the truck had proper transport labels on it or not.

khanan
12-09-2013, 06:24 PM
There were no labels on the truck at all. It was in a container, strapped inside a crate. Not sure if you saw the picture posted earlier, but here is the capsule itself:

No pun at all ahaha, you should read more into radiation and how different types of radioactive decay can go through multi layers of material.

I would imagine they would not mark the items as radioactive as they are probably afraid of theft/attracting attention for building bombs and weapons.

They were saying the equipment on the truck for lifting the crates and stuff made the truck desirable to steal.

Just down south from B.C. they secretly transport waste on the highway and the governments own estimates is something like 5k will die from one of these trips and its exposure.

They should be parking them on the highways while there are protests going on then.

What? That can't be right. Unless that "5k" is dollars and not people. Source?

Do yourself a favour, and look at that guys previous posts.

Then give your head a shake for not having him on "ignore" yet.

An Oregon state representative was saying this in a town hall video I saved some years back.. I cant find it in my current hard drives but he said the governments own estimate was 3000 or 5000 that will eventually die due to exposure from one trip if I remember right.
