Anyone ever had a bad experience with these cars?

I have taken a look around the web but would like to actually talk with a person who has owned one.

Thinking about maybe getting one, that or a newer 370Z.

Gas is super expensive
maintenance is expensive
shit is expensive when they break
SMG is fucking gay in the city if you dont know how to drive it

the power is amazing for a boat like car. Awesome on the track as well.

haha those are a ridiculous pair of cars to cross shop.

They both perform well, literally the only thing they have in common.

I worked on them and they are extremely expensive to maintain compared to any Japanese sports car or luxury car.

The SMG is very tempermental and not enjoyable unless thrashing, which will cause it to eventually fail haha.

I wouldn't touch one now that none of them have warranty.

Engine is heaven and the bills to fix it will take you there.

My brother picked one up last spring and he's enjoyed it a lot. He's only put 7500ish kms on it though. Basic maintenance only for him this far, and I believe the car is sitting at only 53,000 kms.

I've been wanting to buy one and have almost pulled the trigger a handful of times but the maintenance scares me away every time. That and there usually is a story behind every one I look at, I've looked at 2 now that got imported from the states that were part of the lemon law, that alone makes me turn around. They're an amazing bang for your buck for initial investment though.

We had one, and our SMG tranny blew out and costed 15k to fix... Car had 40,000kms

The maintenance definitely explains the used prices, just like the Cayenne. Too bad, they're beautiful cars for sure.

hmy buddy had one... drove it to about 90,000km and never hard... has had to put in roughly 10-15k of maintenance and repairs annually since warranty expired.

you can get them with a 6 speed manual to avoid the outrageous smg repair bill if that is what is scaring you off. Lovely cars, have driven a couple. I would not recommend servicing at the dealer though, cause they will fist you for 5g every time you walk in.

For service, bring it to Sheni's.

I agree, the maintenance aspect of owning one is little scary. I have an '03 350Z right now. Never have had any issues with it at all. Probably the best vehicle I have ever owned.

I looked at a few M5's and a few newer 370's over the summer. Both comparable in price. Just wanted to find out some more about the M5.

Thanks.

My friend's tranny went as well, things seemed to keep adding up in regards to maintenance, needed to have two wheel bearings replaced and a few other items. His quote was "I barely get to drive the thing, it's always at the dealership"

I probably have the highest KM E60M in the city and I have not had any major issues other than the idrive unit dying.
I do plan on doing some major maintanence items like rob bearings, SMG pumps etc next summer.

This car is amazing!! I have a 2010 but its still on the E60 chassis. Issues arise when people step outside of having BMW or a BMW tech work on it. I agree, around town the SMG tranny is slow, dim witted and very clunky, however in M mode I think its the best tranny in the world.

Heres a great video :-

I would like one for the exhaust note alone.

Oh, no doubt she looks great.

How's the ride on the M5 around the city? Is it firm?

On soft and aftermarket springs, its not too bad. On hard its pretty brutal. Only really works on a smooth as fuck track. Racecity was too bumpy for its hardest setting imo, at Oregon Raceway it was great.

I've given one before and I thought it was fun to drive hard but not a great car when you drive it normally. The transmission is annoying and there's not much torque. I prefer my for CTSV for daily driving but would prefer the M5 on a track.

wow a 2010, those are super rare. What colour?

For what the car is it's reliable. Think about a high compression v10 with an SMG transmission in a Ferrari, think about how that would compare to the maintenance of an m5. The M5 is a bargain and probably the best bang for buck sports sedan on the market right now. Just go in expecting it to need repairs like any other V10 sports car.

I'd probably go for (at least) an 07 so you can get a 6MT. But then again, if it were my money, I'd track down an E39, which is, IMO, the best looking M5 ever.

Check this out:

Hugely more reliable as well.

Totally agree with you on that. Sub 5 second 0-60 is impressive now never mind almost 14 years ago. I didn't know that you could get it with a stick shift..bonus.

E39 M5s ONLY came with 6MT and nothing else. You know, back in day, when BMWs were actually enjoyable and owned the sports sedan market.
