you can get them on ebay for $1, many of them are variable so you can tune them yourself... if you're using it for USB power in your car, you can also just take apart a usb cig lighter (most people have 100 of these sitting around) and use it.

If you want just the IC, I have a couple on hand that I'll sell for $1 each:

You can also get them at B&E Electronics: http://www.be-electronics.com/AboutUs.asp

MRO Electronics should have them http://www.mroelectronics.com/mro/ otherwise Active Electronics on 32nd Ave NE would have them too.

Type in "voltage regulator"....there's a 5V one for $4.99

that's exactly what I'm looking for. Thanks.

That type of regulator will probably give off a lot of heat. A switching regulator would be way more efficient.

I'm using it for my mustang tach/speedometer, it uses a 12/5 volt. The original one is quite a bit different but it's $40 and they aren't that efficient and seem to blow, which is what happened to my original. From threads on classic mustang forums, apparently these regulators work really well.

If the gauge doesn't draw a lot of power the linear regulator should work fine. For larger loads the switching regulators really shine.

Thanks man, I'll try it if it doesn't work like I want it to.

This switching regulator is pretty close to indestructible:

Thanks for the regulators Murray!
