I'm looking for a dash cam.
-simple to hookup and setup and

-discreet.id like to leave it in the car all the time and not worry about someone getting curious to streal

-good reliability. i don't want it to have short life then break. i don't want to have to constantly be fooling with it to make it run properly, either settings, firmware, or hardware. pretty much setup, then let it go.

-the cheaper the better. I'm not sure about what i need to spend to get above what i want. maybe give me ideas in different price ranges. maybe $250 and under. and $$250 or more category.

:burnout:

This site has lots of good info:

Not sure what your budget is but the G1W is a good deal at $50.

Most beyonders run the Blackvue 400 or 500 but it's > $200 and it looks like there are better dashcams on the market now according to that website.

My buddy just picked up a couple of the lukas 5900's and loves them no complaints and the company is quick to respond to any questions

Interestingly, the site doesn't list Aiptek or Cowon.

Cowon Global (http://www.cowonglobal.com/) Can't link directly but click on "Blackbox" at the top.

I have the DVR-207 and I really like it. It was $72 on ebay (estore009). It comes with a suction cup window mount and a 12v cigarette plug. I like it because the plug steps it down from 12v to 5.5v, so I leave it plugged in 24/7 and havent had any battery issues yet. Left it for 3 days plugged in and it was still good to go.

In addition to recording video you can also take pictures just by pressing a button. This can be handy in accident situations. The camera will turn itself off when the 12 plug is turned off, but can be forced on as it has an internal battery. So say at an accident you need to take pictures because you forgot your phone or something (which has happened to me!) this works great.

I have a second one as well, never installed that I could sell you if you wanted.

i have a DOD LS300w (not purchased locally, but ordered from China). Works well, but in lower temperature, like today, it doesn't seem to like to turn on :P. My car is parked outside.

our other car has a generic branded model similar to the LS300w, that one seems to turn on fine, but that car is parked in our uninsulated garage.

both units are around 120 ish with shipping. But these aren't as small / discrete as something like the blackvues...

I'll tell you what not to buy: Aiptek. I got into a 10 car pileup on Glenmore a few weeks ago and the POS failed upon impact. The video cut out 10s before the crash acurred (when I needed it most). It must have been buffering the video and not recording in real time (or close to it). Pure garbage.
