Ok Cheap scottish blooded andy has issues with quarts of 0w40...

Where can I get jugs? 13$ a quart is too fricken much... Especially when the benz takes 9L of it...

Or who sells 1L for a reasonable price?

Thanks in advance!

Andy

It goes on sale at crappy tire from time to time.

I hardly see any of the less popular grades go on sale. But just incase, you can sign up for sale alerts at Canadian Tire and load up whenever it does go on sale.

Andy, couple options for you man. Go to the PetroPass on 52nd St and 61st Ave SE, or to Boss Lubricants on 112 - 6303 30th Street SE. Open up a corporate account for your business. You'll be able to buy synthetic 0W-40 in jugs or pails, or whatever at discounted rates. The last 0W-40 pail I bought from Boss worked out to be about $6 a litre. Happy shopping.

Hmmm... Didn't realize boss lubes did a 0w40...

But then it doesn't meet the 229.5 rating that the ML calls for...

Oh Jesus you're one of those guys that picks apart oil ratings?

No I'm one of those guys who follows mfg'ers requirements - on weight and specs. They don't publish them for fun... Correct oil beats blown engine every time...

^^ It's prolly not listed on there because Boss may not be widely used/marketed for imports, but with the right viscosity you should be fine. Not saying to do this but I ran 15w40 in my Subie and never had an issue, plus the kid who ended up buying my car called me whining about the clutch but he said the engine ran fine, and this was almost a year later. I've seen 15w40 in 650hp Mustangs, no problem. Ran it in my 454, much better than what was recommended.

I'm 99.9% sure you won't have issues so long as it's synthetic 0w40.
If you're not comfortable with it you might have to suck up the cost of "proper" oil.

Big difference between 60s/70s designed cast iron block without emissions... And an aluminum engine with expensive emissions...

The ml320s really bad on sludging and eating catalytic converters if you use the wrong oils... So it makes sense to follow recommendations.

My work trucks used to be cheapest Dino oil I could find and 5k intervals. New one - well synthetic makes sense on mileage and interval... Savings on improved economy and longer interval - covers the extra cost (albeit I tend to stock up on 5w20 on sale, so its usually minimally more $)

But boss lists itself as 228.3 compatible - so its unlikely its a market issue... Probably additives are off...

Yes, cause your anecdotal experience trumps millions of dollars of research and development by engineers who designed the engine to run on "proper" oil.

You can say all you want about mercedes reliability outside of the engine, but one thing that runs for a long time is a mercedes engine.

Personally I would keep boss oil far away from my car. There is a decent sized list of oils that meet the 229.5 amg spec, but only a handful are available in town and they are all 10 bucks a liter or more unless you find a sale or have a hookup. Just remind your cheap blood that any single repair that may be brought on by incorrect lubrication will likely be at least an order of magnitude more expensive than what you would have saved by not buying the good stuff.

I switched from mobil 0w40 to Eneos 5w40, which is 229.3 rated. See if you can run that?

There's a couple 5w40s that are 229.5 compliant - and there's a sticker underhood that I'm guessing is related to the recall for sludge... Saying use 229.5 compliant only - mobil 1 0w40 recommended.

I'm probably going to try out the 5w40 liqui moly 229.5 compliant - worst case if its doesn't sound right - I'll dump some oil flush into it and suck it up and go mobil 1...

kinda interesting there's some 5w30's on the benz approved... I wonder if I should dare...

I've been running Amsoil products for 25 years (I am that old) I now run this in my BMW's -- European Car Formula 5W-40. I also get my Mann Filters from Amsoil.

Andy, did you find some for sale in MT? Would you need receipts in 10 L increments for warranty purposes? 1 quart is $7.74 at walmart (mobil 1 0w40) - if you want some and can find it cheaper, let me know. Will do it at cost....because it's almost Christmas.

Leaving on boxing day.
