Temporary carpet/padding for basement

Hey Guys,

Was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction or has experience with this. I am holding off on developing my basement for a few years but I want to set it up safely so that my kids can run around and have a place to play. I was thinking of purchasing a roll of cheap carpet and just lay it out (not permanent) or some type of foam padding or underlay. I did find a roll of some sort of padding at home depot but it was quite expensive, $50 for a 6x9 roll.

Anyone know what I can use and where to buy something cheap since this is only temporary? Anyone have something similar setup so the basement is at least somewhat functional before development?

kids love falling on their faces... i'd go with something like this, plus there would be a used market vs the carpet for when you are done with it

Agreed, but don't buy that stuff, its crap once the kids get older and run around, it will just get ripped up because it is quite thin and can't handle the abuse of age 4+ kids running around. We recently put in some nice 3/4" foam/rubber mats in the basement. They are the same mats used in my wife's Dojo and can handle anything. They go for about $26 for a 40"x40" section.

When I grew up, the basement we had was commercial grade carpet (the thin pile stuff) glued on the concerete. That stuff stood up to everything. You could play hockey down there just fine and took on 10 years of abuse.
I can't recall it every being too cold, etc.

I have left over carpet from my basement development. It's a 15ft by 10ft roll of brand new carpet that my contractor over ordered. There is underlay also that is laying around that was excess. PM me if your interested. I'm willing to part with it for $150.

Picked up those Canadian tire square pads.. There's 4 per package and they are thick enough to provide adequate padding and the kids like to run around on them so far.. I'm also thinking it will be good for working out.. I bought enough to cover half my basement I might just roll out some cheap carpet for th other half
