Split from this thread: http://forums.beyond.ca/st/378107/motorist-caught-driving-on-highway-while-watching-tv-in-snowstorm/

I've done that on the QE2:poosie:

Well, not exactly. I've put on Netflix on my headunit but I don't actually watch, just throw something on I've seen a hundred times just to listen. Buuut not during a snowstorm

Go ahead, judge me:bigpimp:

Nothing wrong with that? Same as listening to the radio

Run netflix on iPhone, plug into HU's that can show video out. I had that in my 911 with a pioneer deck, great for passengers on long trips.

I usually do this on HWY 1 to Van, tablet or phone connected to HU, fiancee blasts her reality TV shows, usually involve much drama so there's plenty of audio content to keep entertained, no need to watch just listen to people fight.

Or put something like you said I've seen 100 times like Seinfeld and just listen.

I can do anything on it, text, email, netflix, browse for porn. :poosie:

Been meaning to post a video of it to show people all it can do while using it with a rooted android phone and the 'unlocker' hack/app, but my cheap knockoff MHL adapter didn't like our most recent cold snap. Basically it's just an external display for my phone that you can input directly. So anything I can do on my S3, I can do it on my headunit too. Payed $250 and it has more features than $1000+ headunits.

Works like a charm. Usually something like Trailer Park Boys or South Park for me, or some stand up comedy. Traffic jams are less stressfull when listening to George Carlin bitch about traffic along with me.

Really long drives, music only entertains me for so long and time seems to go by faster when listening to shows.

Although now I've found a few podcasts I like so I try to stick with listening to those.

Fastest thread derailment ever? Waiting for the Helen Lovejoys to show up to this one

my 10 year old in dash pivets towards passenger. wife would watch movies all the time. it was a rule she had to watch something that ive seen 100 times so i would only listen and not look.

Shit, AppRadio is compatible with Android phones now? Maybe it's time to retire the ol' AVIC.

That Pioneer Appradio looks pretty nice. Although, I just can't bring myself to ruin the interior of my car. :(

Works better with Androids than it does with Apple phones. But also works better with some versions of android than others. Search the app "arliberator" which basically just cracks it to run any app instead of the rubbish stock pioneer ones.

There's a similar app for Apple phones now, but I heard it's tricky to get going properly and have never tried it.

Which deck are you using? Presumably it uses GPS off your phone and not any built in maps?

I have the appradio2

It comes with it's own GPS antenna, so I'm sure there's an option somewhere to use that with the stock pioneer map apps, but the way I have it setup it uses the GPS from the phone. I've used google maps this way as navigation and it's worked great, turn by turn instructions, worked just like any separate standalone GPS

Seeing the new appradio3 makes me really dislike my DNX9980HD. Whixh was twice as much. :banghead:

Some old pictures that Offroad took to show someone, but here's me using the popular OBDII app "Torque" to get gauges and do a fault code scan, within my headunit:)

That's a far reach from putting your laptop on your dash, and then claiming you were only listening, lol.

Man, if I can just unplug the wiring harness and steering wheel remote from my AVIC and plug it straight into a new AppRadio deck, I'm sold haha! Twenty minute upgrade!

I absolutely love it. One of the things stopping me from upgrading from my S3 is how well it works with this phone.

Such an easy connection. HDMI cable from the headunit to an MHL adapter, to the phone. Also a hardwired 12v power source to the MHL adapter, so my phone charges while plugged in.

I've read with some phones it's not so easy. The actual Pioneer android cable only worked with up to S2 era androids, then when the S4 came out it had trouble scaling from 1080 to 720 but I'm pretty sure the app had an update that has since dealt with this, plus with the new appradio 3 I'm pretty sure android 4.3+ phones now work well with it

So I have an S3. If I want to be able to do cool shit with AppRadio, what kind of stuff would I need? I just looked at btimbit's post and went :dunno:

Sorry, I guess I was off in my earlier post. The Appradio 3 hasn't been fully cracked yet and people are having difficulty with Android 4.4+ with the appradio 2 still.

Futureshop still sells the appradio 2 I believe.

Setup I have:

Works with Appradio 2 (SPH-DA100) Includes microphone for hands free calls, and GPS antenna. Also has input for a separate backup camera

Hardware
-1 standard HDMI cable

-1 Samsung S3 MHL to HDMI adapter (Has to be the S3 specific one. Best to get the Samsung branded one as well, there's no name brand ones out there for half the price but most don't work, or don't work for long)
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-ca/product/samsung-samsung-galaxy-siii-hdtv-adaptor-epl-3fhubegcan-epl-3fhubegcan/10208732.aspx?path=7e50cde5044fb5cd9bfdca297d94a958en02

-Micro USB power supply, needed to power the MHL adapter, 1amp+ will also charge phone while plugged in) I have this exact one
http://www.ebay.com/itm/200610319068?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

-Parking brake bypass (Required for the crack to work, and/or to play videos without the parking brake being applied)
Not the one I have, but;
http://www.ebay.com/itm/110953585116?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Software
-S3 needs to be rooted. Just a simple root, don't need any fancy rom or anything like that, mines just a stock root

-App Radio Liberator (arliberator)
Cracks the headunit to be compatible with any apps, instead of just the mediocre stock pioneer ones
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kyle.arliberator&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5reWxlLmFybGliZXJhdG9yIl0.

Then I recommend, but it isn't necessary

-Screen Standby: Turns off your phone screen without disabling the feed to the headunit. Save battery life and prevent possible overheating
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1934495).

-Carhome Ultra: Handy app that provides a less distracting, easy to use homescreen for when the phone is in car mode
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=spinninghead.carhome&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsInNwaW5uaW5naGVhZC5jYXJob21lIl0.

Once it's all said and done, you connect your phone by first connecting bluetooth, then plugging it into the MHL adapter.

I have app capabilities on my Pioneer but I haven't bought the fancy cord yet to enable it with my iPhone. I have a pioneer amp in my house and it came with one so maybe I'll plug it in and use it if its as good as everyone says.

Cool. So I should probably spend the time to collect this stuff on Ebay before I go find the head unit?

^That's what I did. If you get it, make sure you get the Appradio2, the Appradio3 hasn't been fully cracked yet.

Original setup can be a bit finicky, but for an afternoon of minor headaches you sure get a lot of functionality, for a relatively cheap price.

Only thing I don't like about it is it has no cd/dvd slot. Not much of an issue, but bugged me at first

I might be mistaken, but looking at the installation manual and it seems like the USB>Micro USB output will power the MHL adaptor to charge the phone? :dunno:
