Anyone been to Sandals Bahamas?

Is all-inclusive worth the 2.5-3k price tag?

I could pay 1.5-2.0k for a nicer hotel but are drinks, food, and activities going to add up fast?

Looking at going just before christmas. Has anyone gone?

I'm going to the Great Exuma one (Emerald Bay) in 2 weeks, I can let you know when I'm back at the end of the month.

I do know that nearly everything is unlimited and free, including scuba diving, water activities, etc. Scuba excursions are normally like $150, if you go for a dive 3-4 times that's ~$600 savings compared to if you went on multiple excursions at a cheaper place.

Day excursions are extra.

Golf is unlimited and free EXCEPT at great exuma, since it's some special course.

A-la-carte dining is free.

Room service is free, etc. Everything seems "premium" and if you eat & drink your face off along with take part in as many extras as possible, I expect to get my money's worth, but I'll let you know when I get back. We paid $2600/ea.

Make sure you guys are in a concierge or higher room category otherwise you won't get a mini bar in your room and room service won't be included. (in my experience at several Sandals properties throughout the Caribbean)

When you check in see if you can be upgraded to a butler and/or swimout room. Worth the extra $$ if its available.

What made you choose exuma over the bahamian? Looks like the flights to the exuma airport only have 2+ stops instead of direct :banghead:

When are you going and when did you book?

Should I be looking for specific wording for the concierge rooms? I saw butler rooms but those are quite a bit more per night.

^^ Been to Both of those Sandals resorts.

When I went to Emerald Bay the diving, seadoo and boat rentals were not free, if that has changed that is a HUGE benefit. (golf was free along with kayaks, wind surfing and other small things but the Scuba gear, sailboats & Seadoos cost coin).
Emerald Bay is newer and more secluded then Nassau and out of the two is my first choice when you want it to be "just the two of you". We had a suite with the butler and pretty much sat on the beach the entire week while drinking rum and swimming. When you are personable and like to do "adventures" Nassau has tonnes of things to do. I can't overly compare the two because Emerald was the Honeymoon and Nassau was the Vacation so the itinerary for each was very different.

The Sandals in Nassau is still very nice, the Hotel is a bit dated unless you go up to a Suite but in all reality you will only spend time in the room when you want to sleep. Getting off the plane and taking the cab ride to the resort leads you through the poverty section of Nassau and you will get that "oh shit i made a mistake" idea but it will quickly change once you get through the area.
All the dining is free and when I was there they had a sushi, Japanese, Italian, American, Buffet that changed Daily and a Fire Pizza place. There was also an "upscale" by reservation only restaurant as well that had great food with smurf portions. Our Favorite thing to do was to watch the sunset with a drink and share a wood fire pizza on the couches facing the beach.
I really enjoy all inclusives as there is no pressure on tipping and you can drink and eat your face off. The Nassau location has a secondary island you can hop on a boat to every few hours and there is a bar and pub at and actually does not get that full so you can swim or relax on the beach with no one around you for about 30-40 ft. Nassau also has a huge casino that is hardly ever busy and a local market to pick up local crafts and "rolex" watches.

Some tidbits when going there is don't go to the stores across the street to buy anything from. Hop on a bus or walk the 6 blocks and watch the $3 2L of coke become $1 at those shops. Additionally the restaurants down the boardwalk have amazing seafood (conch chowder i still talk about same with the 2lb serving of lobster that cost $11). The resort has a great beach and swimming pool as well as amazing shopping (yeah really) and tennis courts right at the entrance. They also have a huge dolphin reserve just a short boat ride away and it is a must see if you have never swam with dolphins. Then another short boat ride will have you riding around in a personal sub with sharks (subs were slow as hell and kinda a let down but the sights were amazing). Lots of celebrities are also there and the clubs are jammed at night when the cruise ships are in. The locals are actually very friendly but have no clue what so ever how to drive so stick to buses or Taxi's. We were able to get a taxi driver who I met at the resort and he gave us his number and we called him whenever we needed a ride and he was there in under 5 minutes every time.

You mentioned you are going just before Christmas, If possible try to be there Boxing Day till the first week of Jan. Its Junkaroo and the Party s, Parades, and festivities are amazing (the second time we went to Nassau was Junkaroo)

I am sure for Hotels in Nassau you were also looking at Atlantis which I also stayed at for a night (so I could get in free to Rhianna with the wife) and I spent in one night there what I did in 10 days in the Sandals Resort. The all inclusive aspect is a real selling point. Just take a day to go see Atlantis don't stay there unless your a single guy.

I've been to a few different countries in the Caribbean, and 2 different sandals. Sandals royal Caribbean in Nassau with the private island is absolutely beautiful, our week stay was worth every penny.

We booked the most basic room, and Just asked for some alcohol to have in the room, they brought us rum, vodka, wine, champagne, beer, all at no extra charge. And they came every day and re stocked it.

I've been to Sandals in Greater Exuama's before it was Sandals... I think it was a Mariott Resort or something like that.

If you're huge into Scuba and are planning on going for 2 dives a day, it may be worth the while, along with the fact that it is a fully inclusive resort.

It is easily the nices resort in the Greater Exuma's.

Problem with it, is the beach seems to face winds far more than the western side of the island and that can make even beautiful days less than desirable.

the last time we went back, just the wife and I, we stayed at a villa in the Hideaways.

It was not all-inclusive, and there is really only one grocery store in all of Jolly Harbour.

Restaurants aren't exactly the best around there, so we brought much of our own "Dry" and Frozen foods - just check with the Bahama's regulations.

I've been to Atlantis in Nassau, done cruises, been to Antigua, Aruba, St. Kitts, Cuba, Mexico, Fiji and a few places in Southeast Asia and the water in the Exuma's is the best I've EVER seen or experienced.

http://www.youtube.com/user/KevinandCorrie?feature=watch

check out the video's posted by this Couple... they did a trip from Miami to the Exuma's and as you can see... the Bahamian islands really are paradise.

& Yes I swam with the ferral pigs, iguana island and dove in the Thunderball Grotto - that's a good tour.

My friend is getting married there, so I actually had no hand in picking the destination. His brother was married at the Bahamian one several years ago and they loved it, but Emerald Bay is newer and supposed to be better, so they decided to try it out.

It's one stop to get there, Calgary --> Toronto --> Exumas. That is with Air Canada Vacations (the company their travel agent used) so I am not sure if there are better options.

We put down a deposit April 2013 and had to confirm within 6 months.

I do know they have different levels of inclusive-ness.

I know for sure that golf is not free, since it's some special Greg Norman PGA course, but golf at every other Sandals is apparently free. Each room gets a voucher for 2 rounds and also spa credit, but I am not sure if that is part of the wedding package.

I am going in 2 weeks, for 1 week.

Scuba is listed as "unlimited and free" on their website. And says "top of the line equipment" is also free. You are allowed 2 dives per day. For $90 they will temporarily certify a new diver.

http://www.sandals.com/scuba/

Non-powered boats and water sports are free.

The golf has changed since I last looked at the website, it is now free for butler class rooms, and still a charge for "category" rooms. HOWEVER that looks like a promotion that ended Dec 31. It might be back to full pay now. It's $175/round + $60 for club rentals. It used to be a charge for everyone.

http://www.sandals.com/golf/bahamas/

Some restaurants have fairly strict dress codes, with only dress pants, dress shoes, and no short sleeves allowed.

Premium wine and longer excursions, as well as the spa, are all extra costs.

Thanks for the info. We are likely going to choose the Nassau one because its more of a family time trip rather than a romantic getaway lol.

I'm going with my gf and her family and none of them golf, too bad.. I will however try doing everything else. Let me know how the service is there. I'm trying to find a direct flight to nassau but they seem to be pretty rare for Nov-Dec. I can only look at dates up to Dec 3, 2014 so I'm just waiting to see when they upload more flights/deals.

-Theres no tipping at Sandals resorts. Apparently staff can be fired for accepting tips from guests. Being polite to the staff will get you more perks than money will.

-I don't think you'll find any direct flights to nassau, we had to stop off in Toronto

-Do the day trip to Atlantis (its worth seeing for 1 day)

-check out downtown shopping (take cab from Sandals)

-Theres some good reef and snorkeling on the private island at sandals.

Just got back from the Exuma Sandals. Let me know if you have any questions.

It exceeded all my expectations, and I easily got my money's worth. It definitely set the bar, and I'll never be able to enjoy a lesser all inclusive haha.

Is scuba really free? What if I'm not certified, could I get certified the first day and just go from there (also free or is there a cost for that?)?

Actually no tipping? Lot's of resorts say "no tipping" but people still do it and it's still accepted.

How are the rooms? Looking on their website, their rooms appear a bit outdated. I prefer a modern look to the rooms/bathrooms and we stayed in a Secrets in Jamaica 2 years ago and it was perfect - just not sure I can go back to something "lesser" now haha.

Looking at a honeymoon right now and our budget has crept up to the $2300 mark per person so if we could find a sandals for a few hundred bucks more it might be worth it.

If you are certified it's 100% free, and 2 dives per day (9am and 11am). Night dives are extra.

If you aren't certified, it's $90 for a thorough course, takes about 2 hours, and is done at a separate dive facility with pool down by their Yacht docks. Really good instruction. This "certifies" you for the week. Wet suit rentals are $10. You are paying for the instructor's time, not the dive(s).

I've never been diving before and it was one of the coolest things I've ever done.

Daily snorkel tours are also free, as is Hobie Cat sailing, paddle boards, kayaks, giant water trikes, etc. There are no powered watercraft at all on Emerald Bay except for the resort's boat.

Yup, actually no tipping. The exception being for "butler" level rooms, you are allowed to tip them. You can tip if you want, but they can get in trouble if they are caught taking it. I completely forgot to take out American money, and my experience was the same as those who got the maids to take the odd tip. The only way to take out money when you're there is with a credit card advance, or I would have got some.

Rooms were awesome. It's an old Four Seasons property and the rooms are quite large. Our bathroom was huge too. I saw a variety of the rooms. Beds and pillows are AWESOME. You even get a pillow menu! Our bathroom had a huge granite countertop with double sinks, 2X magnification mirrors, modern walk-in shower w/modern showerhead, and a modern jetted tub. I wouldn't call it ultra modern, but it definitely wasn't dated. Furniture and bedframe were mahogany. TV was a flat screen. Some rooms had newer looking couches in them. Kind of subjective I guess, but dated is not a word I would use, nor ultra modern. I was extremely happy with it all.

My experience is specific to the Exuma Sandals though. Grenada is their newest one, and is very modern looking, you may want to check that one out:

I'd recommend bumping up to a Sandals, all their properties seem to be held to the same standard. Some friends that were with us stayed at $3000 private island all inclusives in other countries (Dominican) and left quite disappointed. They said Sandals was way better.

I do recommend getting the cheapest possible room at Sandals though, which is what gets filled up first. At Exuma, you still got full free room service, breakfast in bed every morning if you wanted, etc. The higher level "butler" rooms grant you a cell phone which you can call your butler at any time to get you stuff. If you don't call them, they call you and ask what they can do for you. Didn't seem to be worth it, but only because of how good the regular service was.

I've been to several sandals properties and although as a travel agent I was always telling people at Sandals you don't have to tip, this is bogus LOL. Wait staff, concierge, room service all linger around until you give them a tip.

It wasn't as glaring as at a resort in Mexico but it still felt expected.

We tipped our butlers $500 for the week and were given the option directly through the hotel to add it to the room charges but we gave it to them in Cash so that they aren't screwed out of it.

Our butler told me that he makes $200/month or something ridiculous and relies on the tips.

Mitsu3000gt
01-30-2014, 03:09 PM
^^^ At Exuma, there was never the slightest feeling that anyone had to tip, no lingering, nothing. I even saw them refuse some tips from other people. All service staff left promptly on their own after doing whatever it is they were there for (breakfast in bed, etc.), you would have had to stop them from leaving to tip them. We didn't have a butler so I can't comment on that, but I can say it for sure it was not worth the extra $1000++ unless you really wanted the room that they were associated with. Maybe it's different at other resorts.

That's good Mitsu, glad to hear that! I've heard lots of experience from co workers, clients and friends that didn't have that type of experience, even at the Great Exuma property.

Luckily I didn't pay extra for the butler, but going forward may do so as it is a wonderful service when you feel like going all out.

Yeah who knows, maybe it would have been different if we had a butler. The maids always did an awesome job, and even came in a second time every day to turn down the bed, and close your drapes/shutters a few hours before bedtime. It was quite impressive. Bartenders and restaurant servers were over the top nice all the time. I did notice there was often a supervisor looking person in every main area (like the buffet) that may have been keeping the tip-free service top notch. Not too sure.

As for the butlers, they were cool, but I found I just didn't need THAT much stuff. Room service food was already free. There are already people walking the beach with coolers full of cold drinks. Dinner or tour reservations is a 30 second phone call. I personally didn't see the value, but again, only because of how good the "standard" service was. Also I believe the butlers are assigned to more than one room, so the service isn't instant, and it was always faster to just go get whatever you needed yourself.

We were in a fairly large group as well, so the few of us who had butlers probably didn't use them as much as if it was just the 2 of them.

I also heard they fire the butlers if they aren't busy, so they are calling you if you don't call them, asking if you need anything. Not sure if there is truth to that. I did hear that the butler is one of the higher jobs at the resort too.

Well time to re-bump this.

So.. today.. after many months of the price being pretty high it went down.

4790 for 2 people for December 13-20 direct flight with WestJet.

I'm pretty sure this deal can't get that much better.. I might bite the bullet and buy it.

4790
-23.95 (WJ rewards 0.5%)
-95.80 (CapOne 2%)
----------
4670.25 / 2 = 2335.13 per person isn't too bad at all!

That's a pretty damn good deal for December IMO. Good find.

Question about your Capital one, the fact that you only got $95 off, does that mean you were able to do a partial redemption? I am just curious since I didn't know if they allowed that or not. The online redemption system seems to only allow for redemption if you remove entire purchases, however maybe you can do partials if you call them? I have the same card which is why I'm curious.

Oh I mean 2 rewards miles per 1$ spent so I get roughly $95 worth of cash back.

I have over 600$ worth of travel so i will likely redeem it depending on how westjet charges my CC. If it's charged oddly then I will just keep saving the points.

Ohh, I see. You factored in the rewards you got from actually booking the trip, gotcha.

Over $600 it's 1:1 redemption and you don't need to worry about the tiered system that exists below that. What I was wondering is if, say, you had $800 of points, could you apply it to a $1000 expenditure, or would you have to wait until you had over $1000 of points? I haven't been able to figure that out yet. It's exactly they same to them, but I don't know if they let you do that.

You have to wait until you have over $1000 in points to redeem 1000. You can always play around with the purchase eraser and make some numbers work. If I book 4790 I can split 8 times to 598.75 each and then use 6k points for that total?

Well time to re-bump this.

So.. today.. after many months of the price being pretty high it went down.

4790 for 2 people for December 13-20 direct flight with WestJet.

I'm pretty sure this deal can't get that much better.. I might bite the bullet and buy it.

4790
-23.95 (WJ rewards 0.5%)
-95.80 (CapOne 2%)
----------
4670.25 / 2 = 2335.13 per person isn't too bad at all!

If you don't mind me asking , what site are you looking at for this price and package? I can't seem to find it on westjet vacations

Thanks

Westjet vacations then scroll all the way down. It says a different price when you look but when you click it will say 4790.

There is an air credit with sandals that is applied during the booking flow. Packages with direct flights on WestJet are a decent rate right now because the winter schedule was just released. As seats sell, prices will increase.

Got engaged at this hotel and went back for our honeymoon. One of my favorite resorts and destinations.

make sure you do a day trip to Atlantis! Sandals Royal Bahamian was really nice, would stay there again for sure.

Crazy deals at Sandals Jamaica Whitehouse right now, $2040 all-in West Jet vacations for end of Sep/early Oct (Deluxe Beachfront Suite). There are 2-3 weeks that work. $1750 if you've been to Sandals once before with their loyalty program.

Jamaica Royal Plantation Sandals also has butler suites for $22XX through West Jet Vacations. These prices were all consistent through both Expedia and my travel agent last time I looked.

Even less if you click through and complete your booking. The package price should drop another $335 or so before payment is due. Massive seat sale right now plus an air credit from sandals.

So what sort of final price would that be, $1700 or so without loyalty, $1450 with loyalty? That is crazy.

Can't speak to they loyalty aspect as I'm not sure, but I can confirm that the prices are correct and cheaper than I've seen them in a very long time.
