View Full Version : So, uhh, I'm running a watch contest?

Some of you may know that I run a watch review website (www.watchesyoucanafford.com). I'm running a contest right now to win a Seiko 5 SNK809.

The site isn't very popular so your chances of winning are pretty good! lol

All you need to do is comment on the review. That's it. No bullshit with signing up for this, "liking" that, etc. Just comment and you're entered.

Rules here: http://www.watchesyoucanafford.com/monthly-watch-giveaway/

Enjoy!

I entered. I like your website, although I'm not as into watches as you are Cam.

Not really in the same world, but would be neat to see a short review of the Casio Classic Digital watch. http://images.mec.ca/fluid/customers/c822/5026-716/generated/5026-716_STA00_view1_1000x1000.jpg
MEC sells it, and I think it's a funny little bit of retro to go along with some good functionality.

Nice mobile version of the site. Didn't comment, 40mm is the absolute minimum for me and I prefer 43/44m.

I hear you. 40mm is my minimum, and I prefer 41-43mm. I was disappointed when I learned you can't really get a Seiko 5 larger than 37 mm because it's such a staple in the automatic scene.

Very cool, i've been thinking of getting into watches again, are we allowed to suggest 'a watch you can afford?' I was looking at those cheaper old soviet-era made ones by Vostok (like the Komandirskie) or Poljot, maybe they'll send you one for review? :D

Um... a Seiko SNZ is 42mm ,a 5 series, and almost exactly the same as a SNK

LOL I am always open to suggestions, but generally my site isn't popular enough for manufacturers to send me watches to review (it'd be nice though... lol)

I should have clarified the price point as well. SNZ's are generally $150+. A good point though, I'd should pick one up...

Cam, I like the website you've started I've been following it, on and off, since you launched about a year ago. It's definitely a great concept - professional reviews of watches which are not the standard gamut of mid-range and high-end pieces.

Considering what you have on the site, particularly the Hamilton and Tissot offerings, I imagine that the "affordable" price-point which you are going for is sub-$1,500 MSRP; is this the case? There are definitely some winners and interesting pieces to be scoped in that range.

And am I mistaken, or is there no review of your Armand Nicolet yet? I suppose the MSRP is higher than $1,500 :dunno:

Since you're looking for some discussion, I'll make some comments on some more recent articles.

Yea I'm trying to keep the focus of that site to the sub-$1,500 price point, more towards the $200 - $1,000 mark.

I haven't reviewed the Armand Nicolet yet because, if I'm honest, I can't take a good picture of that watch to save my life. lol

I started the site because when I first started making some decent buys (at the $1,000 - $2,000 range) there was a serious lack of sites that even talked about those watches let alone reviewed them. I'm not really trying to make money at it so much as I'm trying to give people perspective.

And thanks for your support :)

Thanks to the contest on watchesyoucanafford.com, I am now the owner of a Seiko 5 automatic watch. Specifically the SNK809 model. This is my first automatic timepiece, so consider this review as coming from the newbie point of view. I've been wearing this daily now for about a week.

The excellent photos Cam posted show the look of this watch very well. It's fairly plain, but handsome to my eye. A black fabric strap, matte silver finish on the case, and black face with white numerals. The 37mm case is pretty small. I'm not a fan of the current fashion of having huge wrist-clocks strapped to your arm, but I think most men will agree this baby could use a few more mm.

I will admit I'm not crazy about the strap. It's nicely finished with no lose threads, but I'm really used to a metal strap. After a while I'm sure I'll change out the strap.

There's not a lot I can say about this watch that wasn't covered in the extensive original review. However, so far I've found this a handsome and easy to love watch that I can see getting a lot of wear from me. Thanks Cam and watchesyoucanafford.com for running this contest!

Hey Cam, I have a few nice watches under $400 that you should do reviews on. I think their all around the $150-300 range, and would be good choices for your site. As their quite nice watches, but not bank breakers either.
Let me know if you want pics or any info on them. You're 100% welcome to borrow them for a month and do a full detailed review on them.

Not much to add this morning other than the fact that I'm wearing my Seiko 5 this morning like I do most days now, and the strap is growing on me. I may not replace it.

Thanks again Cam!

You mean the Raketa watches made in the soviet-era that's on eBay? Id be weary as some of those are frankenwatches. I bought one that stopped working and couldn't be repaired because they fucked up the insides so bad.

Vostok Europe is a brand that started in 2000s or something.
