Nissan has unveiled the IDx Freeflow and IDx NISMO here in Detroit for the first time in North America. The vehicles were first unveiled at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. The IDx Freeflow has a casual/lifestyle focus, while the IDx NISMO is an ultra-sporty model of the future that looks as if it came directly from Gran Turismo 6.

reminds me of a 70's skyline...that Nismo one is sick! For some reason I actually like these.

Love the interior, but I still can't get behind how the front end of this car looks, as much as I want to like it.

as said in the 'Nissan to revive 180sx?' thread, glad they at least used Sunshine Yellow #919. Too bad there's still not engine rumours.

Pretty sure the inspiration is a 510/Bluebird. The Nismo one even has the BRE stripes!

It certainly looks like a mixture of retro and new aged styling to me.

Very interesting... I kinda like it, totally different from all the other bland cars out there.

It looks great in person. I'm a huge fan of these cars, if they retain even 70% of the concept design cues. Maybe it's because I'm old and can relate to old Datsuns.

I loved the 510s!

I would buy one if it kept the same profile of the concept.

Couldn't agree more. A retro ricer

It's funny that everyone has a different idea of which old Datsun/Nissan it resembles. Goes to show that Nissan did an excellent job incorporating styling from every memorable old car.

Nissan confirms the IDx production! (http://jalopnik.com/nissan-confirms-the-rear-drive-idx-concept-will-go-to-p-1501793053#)

Well, one of them at least, but they're essentially the same car, a sort of rebirth of the legendary Datsun 510 in street-going and race form. Nissan told Australia's Drive and other news outlets that a production version of the IDx could happen in 2016 or so.

Nissan executive vice president Andy Palmer told media there was no confirmation of which of the two concept models would hit production.

"Don't say that we won't do both, but we will definitely do one of them," he said.

He went on to hint that the IDx might have a manual transmission, or at the very least, paddle shifters.

And that's great news, because a.) both cars look amazing and b.) we need as many affordable rear-wheel drive sports cars as we can get.

If the IDx's production car is anything like the concept, it could be powered by a sub-2.0-liter four cylinder engine, likely turbocharged. If they keep it light, that should get the BRZ fighting done just fine.

Get excited! This will be one to watch out for.

So we won't get the 180sx revival but if this thing works out and embodies what made sport compacts like the 510/Bluebird SSS & S-Chassis trilogy a hit for Nissan back in the day, I have reason to be really interested in this car now.

The production car won't be anything like the concept, the IDx is pretty much as show car as you can get. Half of those elements aren't even real, those really cool mirrors are a hunk of silver plastic that doesn't even have a mirror in 'em haha. The headlights doesn't even project any lights at all.

Yeah plus with pedestrian bumper laws, that pointed upper front end will probably disappear.

But for me as long as it's sub 2800lbs, decently rigid chassis, at least 200-250hp whatever displacement turbo powerplant and RWD, i'll stay in the loop for news on this one. All criteria Nissan is familiar with, so I have faith. :D

On a related note, Nissan plans to have 4 sports cars in its lineup, it'll be:

-'update' the GTR with hybrid option, :/

-370Z successor/next Z car: RWD most likely w/ turbo

-Whatever becomes of the IDx

-potentially might sell the Bladeglider EV (http://jalopnik.com/the-nissan-bladeglider-is-a-three-seater-deltawing-for-1460751710) (Electric Deltawing for street use, offer a turbo gas engine like the one in the Lemans version damnit), :/

Nissan is planning to double its sportscar range to four in the next few years as a result of the "phenomenal" reaction to the IDx Freeflow and Bladeglider concepts unveiled at Tokyo in November, chief planning officer Andy Palmer said in Detroit.

With replacements for the 370Z and GT-R also in the product plan, Nissan will be able to cover the whole sportscar market before the end of the decade, Palmer said.

"The IDx will be at one end of the spectrum and the Bladeglider at the other, and in the middle we will have a lower end sports car and a new GT-R.

"With the GT-R, we will do a renewal each year and there will be a new one. It will retain the mechanical look of the current car but with more of the cues from the latest Nissan design. It will still be very aggressive."

Palmer also hinted that it will be a hybrid, or that at the very least there will be a hybrid version.

"We have registered the trademark R hybrid," he said.

On a replacement for the 370Z, he said: "I know what the powertrain will be and I know it will exist. It would be reasonable to assume it will have a downsized turbo engine. There will be normal and Nismo versions."

Palmer said response to the IDx and Bladeglider concepts had been "strong enough for us to put it into the mid-term plan". The Bladeglider will be a full electric car with 70% of the weight towards the rear.

The IDx is seen as a way of re-engaging with younger drivers who regard "time spent in the car as wasted time away from social media", while the Bladeglider, with its very narrow front track, is aimed at those who see all cars as polluting.

"I wanted something like the IDx when I was a kid," he added. "It is rear-wheel drive and a bit of a bad boy. The other is an alternative take on the sportscar and guilt free fun. It will be the best handling car you've ever driven but with zero emissions. The greatest challenge is getting people to believe it will work.

"The UK is the worst place in the world in terms of new people wanting driving licences, and Germany is also bad. In Japan the decision tends to be a bit of a postponement. We have to find a way of re-engaging with youth who are not interested at all. I don't want to make these cars attractive to me but to them."

3L Turbo and be called 300ZX again?

If they can do a 400HP Z and bring the DCT down from the GT-R it'll be great.

I just hate that Japanese can never seem to move their top tier technology down to common cars.

Autoweek drove them for a bit, an interesting takeaway from the article is that the three concept cars were each built on an S15 Silvia chassis.

Eventually, I lost Gallagher altogether and opened it up to maybe 12 or 13 mph. What a rush. This was livin'. I felt like I was in the Five and Dime Club in a long line of Datsun 510 owners on the way to… the other side of the parking lot! Woohoo!

 I guess ~15 mph in a parking lot is technically 'driving it'
