Trance
Techno

each with their own sub-genres

Techno has a more driving and repetitive beat. Trance has way more melody. But then you get into the other stuff like hard trance, hard techno, hardhouse, funky house...etc..
But as far as i was taught, its all under the category of electronic music, and not Techno.

Actually, in the beginning trance was repetitive and hypnotic, hence the name "trance". But now trance has gotten worse tho. Every song is now uses the cliched, breakdown build anthem (progessive trance) template, it can get boring.

Techno as a word is generally misused to descibe anything electronic. It doesn't have the emotion of trance, it's more depressing, gritty and industrial
