i am a lover of benz unfortunatly i am a poor benz lover. I was thinking of getting an older 190 E AMG or E Class. I really love the old 190s and was thinking AMG for the obvious reasons but was wondering if any of you benz people know how good the 5 speed trannys are on these bad boys (i heard rumours they arent great). Any input or cool pics to motivate me are appreciated.

If you have the money get an W124 E500, mercedes-porsche built, 320hp, 340 ft/lbs torque I believe, a beautiful rocket.

You heard right, the old 5 speeds aren't that great. In fact, the current 5 and 6 speeds feels like crap too, nowhere near honda shifting quality.

If you're going benz, stick with an auto.

The 5 spds in the 190 series car were nothing more than alright. Not great not bad, but they are rare, so don't pick a car based on the tranny, cause you could get stuck with a lemon since selection is low.

W124 E classes like mine and Hakkola's are great cars, regarded as the best bult MB's of all time, (not the W201 190E's) and have a classy look even though they've been out since 1986. Aftermarket for modifications is not bad, you don't need to do a lot to make them turn heads.

Obviously get the newest car of the series and biggest motor if you can afford it/need the power.

Stay AWAY from the 500E(92, 93) or E500 (94) if you are a little cash poor as maintenance is a bitch on those models. (not to mention you will still pay more than $30,000 for the 1992 model) Even though they look the same as a 300E only 50% of the parts are the same. with only 1500 units of the 500 brought to North America, you can imagine the lack of parts and cost of them.

In my opinion, the 190 is fun, lighter and quicker to toss around than the E class, but it doesn't feel the same, much like a 3 series and 5 series BMW difference.

for W124, go with at least a 1990, as the cosmetic changes began that year.

Good luck and PM me if you have any E class specific (or any MB ) questions.

Not a fan of the red wheels but a sweet car.

Like zorro said easy to make it a head turner, there's actually quite a few mods you can do if you feel like finding parts.

for this type of question go to mbworld.com (maybe .net or something else) or benzworld.org and you will be able to tune into a specific forum with people with the car you wanna get. Find out from owners, I love benz alot b/c it is a great car from A-Z and especially on highway driving but have never owned a pre 98 MB.

thanks guys and the pics you posted were NICCCCEEEEEEEEE cars. I like the 190 due to its sportiness (best in both worlds classy and fun) but i wanted a 16v and to my knowlegde they are all 5 speed. I E - class is a hella pimp ride and still has the power to be a fun ride but how is the handling compared to the smaller lighter 190? That E - class coupe was amazing never even seen one like that before. Thanks again.
