For the last 6 months or so I've been addicted to this website, backing all kinds of things. I'm assuming everyone here is familiar with how the website works, but if you aren't then I'll explain it briefly. If you have an idea for a product, you can present it on Kickstarter and people can back your project at predefined amounts of your choice ($20, $50, $5000). Each price level has an associated reward, so for $20 they might get a copy of your finished idea, for $50 they might get a copy plus a t-shirt. Or they might get their name on the product somewhere.

Anyway, here are the ones I backed, I'm hoping some other people will post interesting ones here I can check out as well.

1. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/weiner/science-ruining-everything-since-1543-an-smbc-coll
Every day for over 5 years I've been reading geek comics at www.smbc-comics.com and they're hilarious. I bought 2 of his books from his website and this third one he put out as a Kickstarter project so I bought that one as well. He was trying to get $20,000 to make the book, he ended up getting $341,667 through Kickstarter.

2. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mightyno9/mighty-no-9
From Keiji Inafune, the Capcom genius behind every original Mega Man game, comes Mighty No. 9, a very similar style game on updated hardware. He was trying to get $900,000 and ended up getting over $4,000,000.

3. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/556341540/pressy-the-almighty-android-button
Pressy is a little button that slides into your headphone jack and when you press it, you can assign it to any action on your phone. So pressing it can unlock your phone or open an application. I thought it was genius.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/assets/001/163/884/dbfb96e6048522fac4652ecc41d43591_large.jpg

4. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/energyaware/neurio-home-intelligence
Neurio: Home Intelligence. It's a little unit that connects at your breaker box and it monitors your home's electrical system. It allows you to control things in your home, monitor energy usage, and it'll also notify you if something seems out of order, like if you forget to turn on the dryer.

5. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1015015457/chipolo-bluetooth-item-finder-for-iphone-and-andro
Chipolo, this thing's pretty awesome. It's a little plastic disc that connects to your phone through bluetooth and also works as a GPS tracker. So you can put it on your dog's collar and if your dog gets lost, just look it up on your phone and go get it. Or put it on your keys so you don't lose them. It also works in reverse, if you have your Chipolo and can't find your phone, just shake the Chipolo and your phone will beep.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/assets/000/994/468/91b721b12fb2a70c937a927ac6504881_large.jpg

6. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/766761497/legendary-rupees
Legendary Rupees. This is someone in Calgary making acrylic rupees straight out of the Zelda games in all the same colours.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/projects/790926/photo-main.jpg

7. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/obdsol/obdlink-mx-wifi-a-wireless-gateway-to-vehicle-obd
This one's really cool, it allows you to get real time reading from your car's OBD-II port straight to your phone wirelessly. You can also use it to control certain models like starting the engine and running the windows.

This is the only one I've supported, along with a few other people here.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rallymatt/easier-said-than-done

The t-shirt I got out of it is one of my favourites (Not just the logo, fit and feel too), I keep meaning to ask the guy where he got it:D Poster goes great in my garage with other race themed stuff too.

Oh, and it was also a great movie

The obd one is interesting, plus ability to function as a hotspot, some left for 80 bucks, might jump on that one.

The OBD readers have been around for ages. I bought one years ago for my car for like $15 from China. Uses bluetooth to your phone, can view anything on it with gauges and shit.

The Chipolo works for 60ft. Geez if you can't find your dog within 60ft, you've got more problems.

The GPS ones are long range.

Some cool stuff here, but that bluetooth tracker is 100% useless on a dog due to the extremely short range limits of bluetooth in a tracking application.

That's part of the beauty of it though, when it goes out of range it'll notify your phone. And when it comes back within range it notifies you again. Great for when you assume your dog is nearby but you didn't realize it took off.

I think that this Reader is throwing data over wifi hence easier for iOS apps to read from.

But if you are on Android, $15 BT dongle and Torque Pro will have the same function of this $120 dongle just because you are stuck with Apple product.

*cough*

On Wednesday night, law enforcement officials contacted Kickstarter and alerted us that hackers had sought and gained unauthorized access to some of our customers' data. Upon learning this, we immediately closed the security breach and began strengthening security measures throughout the Kickstarter system.

No credit card data of any kind was accessed by hackers. There is no evidence of unauthorized activity of any kind on your account.

While no credit card data was accessed, some information about our customers was. Accessed information included usernames, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, and encrypted passwords. Actual passwords were not revealed, however it is possible for a malicious person with enough computing power to guess and crack an encrypted password, particularly a weak or obvious one.

As a precaution, we strongly recommend that you change the password of your Kickstarter account, and other accounts where you use this password.

To change your password, log in to your account at Kickstarter.com and look for the banner at the top of the page to create a new, secure password. We recommend you do the same on other sites where you use this password. For additional help with password security, we recommend tools like 1Password and LastPass.

We’re incredibly sorry that this happened. We set a very high bar for how we serve our community, and this incident is frustrating and upsetting. We have since improved our security procedures and systems in numerous ways, and we will continue to do so in the weeks and months to come. We are working closely with law enforcement, and we are doing everything in our power to prevent this from happening again.

Kickstarter is a vibrant community like no other, and we can’t thank you enough for being a part of it. Please let us know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. You can reach us at [email protected].

Thank you,

Reading Rainbow gets a mil in 12 hours and here I am collecting bottles and couch change

Hours after its launch this morning, a Kickstarter campaign launched by LeVar Burton to bring back Reading Rainbow as a web series hit its goal of raising $1 million dollars. The campaign had set a deadline of Wednesday, July 2 to raise the cash, using incentives that range from offers of Reading Rainbow mugs and calendars, to passes to the Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas in July, to (for $10K) a private dinner with Burton at which you could wear the “one-and-only original visor” he wore when he played Geordi La Forge on Star Trek: The Next Generation

Great campaign. And I grew up watching the show. Loved it and it would be awesome to bring it back.

There's definitely a market for jeans like that but I wouldn't want to buy them without being able to try them on first.

I hate the recent skinny jean fad. I'm not even that big and I went jean shopping and only found one pair that fit. Even in them the legs are tight and I find it tough to lift my leg more than 2 feet off the ground.

I actually came up with this idea myself 6 months ago and had been working on a way to implement it until I saw the multiple Kickstarter projects pop up a few weeks ago. The only difference in my design is the copter would automatically fly back to its charging base when the battery gets low, then fly back out to meet you when it's charged up again. And my idea was for snowboarding, not motocross.

Sounds like they've been developing the Airdog for 2 years now. Just need kickstarter to get production started.

Whereas it sounds like Hexo+ had the idea, got the kickstarter campaign and hype machine going, and are now trying to put together a working product.

Looks like a pretty failsafe kickstarter but it would seriously suck if it fails with a >$1K commitment.

I have a feeling the air space around the jumps will be cluttered with these if they actually work as well as advertised. And are cheap enough. They'll be banging into one another, maybe there should be a setting for altitude levels like with planes.

Exactly... No prototype yet?
And their development timeline seems unrealistic.

They've reached over 2,000% of what they asked for. You'd think they'd ramp it up.

I will absolutely be putting something up. And I'm definitely not going to be using mine on busy runs - probably runs where nobody else is. But I'm sure other users will be much less careful with them. Kind of the problem dumbing down a technology that really needs to be respected to be safe.

That's pretty much describing multirotor RCs to a T. The responsibility isn't there for most users and it will be the government that brings in controls for them..

http://globalnews.ca/news/1586640/man-who-raised-55k-on-kickstarter-to-make-potato-salad-throws-party/

COLUMBUS, Ohio – An Ohio man who raised $55,000 in a joking crowdfunding appeal to pay for his first attempt at making potato salad threw a huge public party Saturday that promised “peace, love and potato salad.”

PotatoStock 2014 was held in downtown Columbus and featured bands, food trucks, beer vendors and, yes, plenty of potato salad. With more than 3,000 pounds of potatoes, the charity-minded party was open to people of all ages.

Zack Brown had jokingly sought $10 on Kickstarter in July to buy potato salad ingredients, but his mission drew global attention and earned tens of thousands of dollars.

The Idaho Potato Commission and corporate sponsors donated potato salad supplies for the party.

Brown is partnering with the Columbus Foundation to support charities that fight hunger and homelessness. The account started with $20,000 in post-campaign corporate donations and will grow after proceeds from PotatoStock are added.

“His fund will have potential way after this potato salad is forgotten,” Lisa Jolley, the foundation’s director of donors and development, told The Columbus Dispatch.

Brown told the newspaper that he intends to “do the most good that I can.”

Gave this one a shot, needed one for the upstairs tv but just didn't commit to the Chromecast at the time:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/2040419302/matchstick-the-streaming-stick-built-on-firefox-os

https://s3.amazonaws.com/ksr/assets/002/661/180/07b939f1817e1edb8b80123fdaccd34c_large.jpg

Mozilla's answer to the Chromecast basically, running on their own OS:

What Does Matchstick Do?

Matchstick is a small, WiFi-connected HDMI stick that plugs into your HDTV or HD Monitor that lets you stream and interact with your favorite stuff from the Internet - movies, TV, music, games, and more! You can even use it in a conference room to get presentations or other media from your laptop to an HDTV.
~

Seen this before?

Well, we approached the Matchstick project with the mindset to to build a completely OPEN hardware and software platform, so we moved forward with Mozilla to create the first streaming stick built and certified for Firefox OS. Matchstick is a entirely new product category for Mozilla, and we can't wait to bring it to you!

We selected the dual-core Rockchip 3066 processor, increased the onboard storage to 4GB, and dropped in 1GB of DDR3 memory. The bigger processor and increased memory gives you a much better video playback cache and increased performance for whatever games and custom overlays you might dream up.
