On the first day of the Olympics too, :/

http://wpmedia.news.nationalpost.com/2014/02/hijack-sochi.jpg

A Ukrainian passenger on a flight to Istanbul claimed there was a bomb on board as he tried to hijack the plane to Sochi, Russia, where the Olympics are kicking off, an official said Friday.

An F-16 fighter plane was scrambled as soon as the pilot signalled that there was a hijacking attempt, NTV television reported. The military jet escorted the plane from Kharkiv, Ukraine, and it landed safely at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport.

“A Pegasus Airlines plane flying from Kharkov to Sabiha Gokcen landed at Sabiha Gokcen safely after receiving a bomb threat while in the air,” the Turkish civil aviation authority said in a statement.

Soluk said the man rose from his seat, shouted that there was bomb on board and tried to enter the locked cockpit. He was reportedly carrying a detonator.

The pilot signalled that there was a hijack attempt and the airport was placed on high alert. Turkey scrambled an F-16 military jet to force the plane to land in Istanbul.

“The man was made to believe the plane was heading to Sochi,” Soluk said. “We are hoping that the passengers are evacuated without even a nose-bleed.”

Anti-terrorist commandos and armed police reportedly searched all the passengers for explosives. Security officials are also searching the plane, a transportation official told CNN.

I was watching from a bar so I may have missed it, but did the countries come out in a very strange order? I was pretty sure I saw Canada and Greece come out before a bunch of 'A' countries, but even the 'A' countries weren't in alphabetical order.

Just listened to the IOC president give his speech, and there was a couple obvious digs at Russia in it.

for example:

Yes, it is possible to strive even for the greatest victory while respecting the dignity of your competitors. yes, it is possible, even as competitors, to live together, under one roof, with harmony, tolerance, and without discrimination, for whatever reason.

Wonder if the dignity part was about the communal bathrooms, and the second was an obvious dig about Russia's stance on homosexuality.

This is going to be a pretty interesting games!

Dave P

You would think if they were trying to cut down on the homosexual levels at the games, communal bathrooms would be the last thing they would build haha.

Haha clever. Almost like they were expecting something to go wrong, so they had a back up plan

The opening ceremony at the Winter Games hit a bump when only four of the five rings materialized in a wintry opening scene. The five were supposed to join together and erupt in fireworks. But one snowflake never expanded, and the pyrotechnics never went off.

But everything worked fine for viewers of the Rossiya 1, the Russian host broadcaster.

As the fifth ring got stuck, Rossiya cut away to rehearsal footage. All five rings came together, and the fireworks exploded on cue.

It looks like the Canadian slopestyle riders didn't really have a grasp on what the judges were looking for. Doing X-Games runs for a FIS judged event.

FIS sucks, but this is what coaches are for. Disappointing results all around.

Yes that sounds legit, some unknown magazine from an anonymous source makes up a story about US and Russia working together, two cold war foes.

I just had a tip from my sources that says that the Canadians and the French are working together to discredit the judges at the Olympics, further discrediting Russia, and making up an excuse as to why they may or maynot win. The exact quote from my source was "We are trying our best to make Russia look bad, because they did so much bad stuff to us...like...ohh shit hold on, they haven't, but still, fuck the commies...ohh wait, they not communist anymore...well fuck them anyways, they suck, all they ever did for the world was go to space, create the periodic table, and a bunch of other useless shit." - anonymous source, Feb 8th, 2014 - Beyond.ca forum

Go Canada, 3 medals already

Tanner Hall (pro skier, oakley/armada/rokstar rider) called this. He said the slopestyle and 1/2 pipe athletes would be in for a surprise because it's all FIS judging which is complete horseshit.

Nope, that's not the case. Maxence Parrot just won gold in the FIS SlopeStyle world cup a few weeks ago (http://www.fis-ski.com/snowboard/freestyle-snowboard/leader-board/slopestyle/), so he did exactly what the FIS judges were looking for. A better run today by any measure, yet they ranked him FIFTH.

Nobody knew what the judges were looking for, including the riders, the coaches, and the judges themselves. Even Sage who won Gold said before the finals that he had no idea, and that the judging was random and made no sense, so he was just going to ignore them and do what he felt like. He got Gold accidentally.

kertejud2
02-08-2014, 07:39 PM
And here I hoped to at least give them the benefit of the doubt that they simply had a more stringent judging style (so rather than judging by just giving what are obviously good runs high scores they had a dumb checklist that would tell them what a good run was) rather than actually being as perplexing and random as it seemed.

Not the best way to showcase your new sport.

I read another article this morning that said that the judges were trying to steer it more towards style than than spins (or whatever the snowboarding term for rotations is), which is counter to what the X-Games weighs more.

As I watched both the semi and the final, I thought Sage did the best overall anyways, and that's with 0 experience with slope style or how snowboarding is judged anyways. Thought he was the most creative. So at the end of the day I think the best guy did win, so to me the judging made sense, but I know 0 about snowboarding tricks and all that. Regardless, thought it was the funniest event to watch by far....made me want to get a snowboarding game...what's good out there for snowboarding games on xbox 360?

Takes more than hucking triples with mute grabs to win. The Canadians had nice runs but the top 2 slope style riders deserved to win. The Canadians needed more style and variability.
