It's been nine years since the last "Initial D" movie. That's way too long for a franchise to lie fallow. A Japanese production team apparently agrees, resulting in the first installment of an "Initial D" animated trilogy scheduled to hit theaters on Aug. 25. It's the return of Takumi, and no, he's not driving an FR-S.

A trailer for "Initial D Legend 1: Awaken" was released yesterday. And yep, it's got everything anime dorks -- and I say dorks lovingly -- love about "Initial D:: the Trueno, dark touge runs, upbeat J-pop, an FD RX-7 challenger, Takumi looking stoic as all hell, the RedSuns driver sweating nervous bullet lines, and a squirrel.

It's hard to believe that the series is 18 years old; Takumi and his Toyota seem never to age, and that poor 4A-GE must have seen so many miles, mostly sideways. (The manga published its last issue in July.) This one promises to be even more faithful to the manga than the Hong Kong-produced 2005 release, which starred Jay Chou as Takumi and really wasn't as bad as some said it was. (The entire thing's on YouTube, if you want to see for yourself.)

When Aug. 25 rolls around, you know what this means: the Japan-only film release will leak out onto the Internet, further causing a butterfly effect where hooptie-primered "JDM" 1986 Corollas with Hellaflush stickers and knockoff Rotas more than double in value overnight. For some, the anticipation has already started.
