Those bird shots are absolutely incredibly! I've seen one or two of those (I believe Waxwing something or other??) but never that many together! Amazing!!

yes, they are waxwings. They are famous for flipping berries in the air and catching them again.

Much easier to handhold just based on the weight distribution. The front element is much smaller so it isn't front end heavy like the 400.

I'm going to have to get back in practice again before I can really judge it, but from what I've seen so far it's very good optics wise. I was always impressed with the 400, so we'll see how this measures up next month when I'm in Texas (twice).

the FD is an amazing performer f/4 and smaller and cheap too!

Both of those look really good actually. Doesn't look like any smearing on either.
I'll get my OM adapter tomorrow, and I'm going to setup the tripod and compare the 21mm CV, 21mm OM, and 21mm Lux.

85L looks great on the A7, but the 135mm CZ is unbelievably good and I don't think I need both.

don't have any first hand experienc but from what I've been reading, the AF is slow with the Metabones EF adapter, atleast compared to a real DSLR.

It's significantly easier to handhold than either of the other two.

I loved my 400 2.8, but it was a pain in the ass to take anywhere as it really doesn't fit in any of the normal sized bags very well due to the massive front element, and it's a bit of a pain in the ass to handhold as it's extremely front end heavy (also caused by the large front element). The hood is a giant pain in the ass (it's a two piece hood on the 400, and it's also HUGE). All that being said, it's ridiculously sharp, and the 2.8 is a nice difference.

At the end of the day, with how much I travel with my gear though I really wanted something that was easier to transport...and since I shoot more airshows now than I do motorcycles having something that's easier to hoist up in to the air is a nice added bonus.

Also didn't hurt that TCS had the 500mm in their display case (the only one in stock in Calgary) and it was in near perfect condition, while the 400mm that was beside it was beat to shit...I don't know how they're going to sell that thing for anywhere near asking price...it's got gouges in the finish all over it, the focus ring looks like it was chewed on, and the lens hood ring is all scratched up too...looks to me like they loaned it out to someone that really didn't care what they did to it, which is a real shame since it's an incredible lens.

Ah well, such is life.

Putting the IR D70 to work. The guy who did the conversion has a shitload of dust on the sensor unfortunately - some require less removal than others. Fun to play around with though. Think I'm going to have to shoot RAW + Jpeg because Lightroom does funky things when importing.

Much to my surprise, The Camera Store called me informing me that my D800 and 80-400 had arrived! Anxious, I pretty much went straight down there.

Unfortunately it's doing the exact same thing it was doing before. So it's still at TCS. The salesman I was dealing with didn't really want to say one way or the other than it was a problem, but I showed him my very obvious concerns with the photos zoomed in on the LCD (that is, inconsistent focusing). He said on his 70-200 he still gets the jittery focus sometimes and with all this tech and resolution that it's bound to be a limitation, which I can honestly agree with to some extent.

Teri at TCS was pretty surprised, disappointed and sympathetic to what is happening. Basically what I'm saying is that it's a design flaw, one that I can accept and know that I need to work with it to really get it to perform (well, kind of luck of the draw AF it seems). That said, if Nikon can accept that and not charge me $1000 for impact damage, I'll probably keep it. Otherwise, it's going to be a long battle it seems :whipped:

Sorry to hear about that Matt, maybe you simply have a defective D800 (not that it makes your situation any better). Nikon reps from various countries have claimed ~2% of D800's had defective AF modules.

Before you send it to Nikon, take good pictures of all areas of the camera, as well as the protective shipping materials. Should you get an impact damage claim (which I believe in most cases are the fault of shipping companies or similar), you will have a leg to stand on still.

Not sure if you're still looking for a full on pro camera, but reports from credible pro's who have experience with all current pro bodies from Nikon/Canon are saying it is in a whole new league. There have also been several reports of no AF fine tune being necessary with any of their lenses, even though the lenses require AF fine tune with all previous bodies. It's still early, but everything seems positive so far.

msommers

Honestly I don't think it's the D800, though it could be a double-whammy situation where they're both defective. I honestly think it's the lens and it's just poorly designed, especially when I don't really have issues with my other lenses.

When I went to TCS today and decided to talk to Nikon about a solution, I said I'm keeping it here (the store) as I don't even want the excuse that it's been dropped in the mean time. TCS seems pretty sympathetic but we both know there isn't much they can do at this point than assist me with shipping.

Waiting to hear back from Nikon Service...

Good luck Matt, you're going to need it. I basically view Canon/Nikon warranties as useless these days.

For the IR, on raw use the trees for your WB control point. Also read up on swapping red and blue channels and see if you like the effect.

My M9. Previous owner removed the white paint from the lettering, I bought a black dot to replace the red.

^ahh...i thought you got an M8 too as for some reason the lettering looked like it was saying M8.

These 2 frames were taken with the F-1 + 135mm f/2 and 400TX, yesterday when it was nice and sunny.
First one was taken at 1/2000th, f/2 and 2nd one was 1/500th, f/11.
I did a stand development with 1+100 rodinal and was glad to see that even overly exposed by 2-4 stops, the image still turned out usable.

A few from the first couple days on Maui, thanks so much to Matthew for the lens hookup and Ryan for all the help with my filters. First time shooting with ND's, I have a lot to learn, thankfully lots of time to practice while I am here!

I like #2 more, however they're both very nice captures. If I'm being nit picky, #1 I would prefer to see the knee not cut-off.

What's the camera and light setup on those?

I have a version of Bella where she has knees still but I didn't like the look as much. I used My 5d and 24-70L with a 1000w florescent/umbrella. I like the umbrella better than the soft box.

I agree. They're both really great shots, but #2 stands out a bit more cause of the lighting and tones. Do you have a coloured version of #1?

No, I shot in jpeg B&W and it actually wasn't on purpose believe it or not.

On the picture of Cassy I turned the saturation and vibrancy way down and left her eyes except for turning up the definition.

Hey kvg I think they are really great portraits! and are fine the way the are.

Just a few minor comments

- I don't the focal length used in #2 is flattering, it seems to accentuate his nose a bit too much
- A bit more light int he back ground might be nice, the environment looks interesting, but you also don't want it to be too distracting
- love the expression in the last photo but the column looks a bit like it is growing out of her head.

nice job

Awesome,

My first instinct is to use a ND filter to blur out the waves, but i really like how they balance out the image.
