Quick restaurant review

Ok, gotta share... I was literally doing a balki bartakamous dance of joy in the middle of the mall when I ran across their menu... (Went for the donair place - after 5 minutes of "hello... Helloooo? Anyone here?" - gave up and looked for other options)

(Went gluten free around Xmas - its killing me!)

Located in the food court at Westbrook mall.

Ok first off - the burgers are awesome, home made patties - very tasty! Hero sauce is definitely worth a try (it has a bit of bite). Second - they have gluten free burger buns (in addition to the regular wheat stuff)! Do you know what I would have given over the past 3 months to find a fast-food gluten free burger in Calgary? And that bun was awesome!

Close to Harveys in choices of veggies/ toppings. And a few oddballs.

Apparently this week is their first week with a gluten free gravy - pretty good, it was loaded full of sliced mushrooms (something I'm supposed to be avoiding). But yummy had poutine - real cheese curds, fries just right crispy, gravy was a touch thin but I'm happy!!!

Not cheap - my 1/2lb cheeseburger poutine and drink was 17$ but I will be back repeatedly!

- Dragons Lair Burger Co
- Westbrook Mall
- Food rating 4.5/5
- Ambience 2/5
- Service 4.5/5

Ok, Needless to say food court = ambience sucks. Service was awesome - from fresh patty to burger in under 5 minutes (literally she was throwing them on the grill while I fumbled with the interac).

You should try Clive burger then, they also have great gluten free buns/burgers.
I think they are Care Bakery buns - they supply most restaurants in Calgary and are delicious

Is this a new place or is it the same ol' burger place that's always been there before? Cause I went probably sometime last year and it tasted like shit..

Alright might be worth a visit, but these days, it's gonna take a LOT to top Five Guys.

30min drive later into the deep SE.

Burgers aren't bad. Fries are well.. obviously NYF due to their concept/head office.

Here's a quick list of some burgers that kill 5 guys.

- Grumans - Maple Bacon Burger
- Charcut - Share Burger
- Naina’s - Stuffed Burger (take your pick)
- Dairy Lane/Blue Star Diner - Dairy Lane Burger
- Smashburger - Spicy Jalapeno Baja w/ sweet potato smash fries

and this one isn't in Calgary but one worth mentioning is the Chuckwagon Cafe in Turner Valley.

Smashburger... No way hahaha. If you want kick, just throw in free jalapenos in your Five Guys. Have yet to try the others, though I am not going to Charcut for a burger.

I've heard of Naina's (Ogden right?) and I've always wanted to try it.

Grumans + 1, strongly recommend all burger lovers to check it out, I dont know why its name is not all that popular, but its right up there with naina's.

Perhaps I have high expectations but I don't like any of the big chains.

I prefer a nice big fat hamburger done on the grill at home and have it cost less and be far more satisfied.

I've passed this Dragons Lair place a few times but I've been so let down by burger joints that I don't want to be let down again.

You'll be dead in a year if you keep eating that stuff.
Wash it down with a glass of redwine at least.

I like both Smashburger and 5 Guys but I believe the 5 Guys burger is overall a little better although I prefer the smash fries over 5 guys fresh cut fries. I like them both better than Southside Burger though. A negative of the far NW is the lack of quality eateries in the area but one thing we are lucky about is that Smashburger, 5-guys, and Southside are all within 5 minutes of each other.

You mean South St. Burger? Don't count out Angel's Drive-in as well. They make a solid burger. SB isn't that bad - it's still decent but nothing about it makes me want to go back. I don't really like the super thin patties, the quality is very inconsistent, like one time my burger was overflowing with ketchup and mayo (whereas FG tastes the same everytime I go back), and I do not like the thin fries at all..

South St. is not even in the competition IMO. There's truly nothing special about their burger, their restaurants seem 'dark', and not even the New York Fries can save them (IMO FG fries are better).

5 guys patty is juicier. It's the best if you do the toppings properly. Smash is good because it has more spices, but it's drier. Clive is very good but overpriced, Flippin' is near the top, very well done.

Yeah I meant South Street. It's not terrible or anything but it's nothing special. I haven't had any consistency issues with SB as I usually enjoy their burgers but I feel 5G's burger is a little tastier.

had it today. Really good stuff. Good quality ingredients. Biggest downside? It's in Westbrook mall. Ambience - negative. Also the owner (nice guy) seems to be working by himself so it was really slow because he took an order, made the food, so I was just waiting there while he was making other people's food. Don't mind sitting and waiting but would be nice to have had my order in so I could have sat down and read something while waiting instead of standing in line grabbing dick.

Tried it yesterday. It was good, but I didn't love it, and I didn't hate it. I might have liked it more if I got a double. Pricing was good. Chilli tastes like it came out of a can though, so I'd skip the chilli fries.

I went to try at lunch.. Verdict? Good if you're in the mall, otherwise my best description of this burger is that a Five Guys burger is what this guy wants to be when it grows up. In it's current state, it almost tastes exactly the same as a Smashburger...

Pluses: the bacon. It was cooked perfectly, not rock hard and crunchy like most other places. The meat was really good but a little thin. Best way to describe it is that it is what a Wendy's patty aspires to be. It tastes fresh, excellent texture, seasoned well, and quite juicy. The toppings were also perfectly portioned.

Minuses: the bun wasn't toasted. If I ever go back, I'll be requesting that the lady (who was very nice BTW) butter it and toss it on the grill. But to be fair, the bun itself was really good. I tried out the chili cheese fries. The fries themselves were only so-so. The chili is homemade (I asked) but it's way too watery be put on fries. Ever try the Wendy's chili fries? This is similar and neither of these chilis belong on fries. Oh yeah.. The fucking ghetto mall haha. At least it looks decent.

For actual MALL food it's right up there. As a burger joint it's middle of the pack.

Honestly the unmelted cheese is the least of the problems on those chili cheese fries. I don't think I've ever actually had good CCF here in Canada. Seems like only Americans know how to do it properly. About the only thing that I actually like that's sort of like CCF on a regular basis is Taco Bell Fries Supreme LOL (which BTW are *NOT* available in the US - go fig) and it's not even chili LOL.

Mmm.. Could use some Sonic tater chili cheese tots about now..

went today for lunch.. blech. Bland and boring but I guess it's the best thing Westbrook has got going for it. Poutine was on salt overload.

When a bun falls apart that quickly it needs to be toasted.

won't be returning...I will keep going to 5 guys and pray that Calgary gets a good decent burger.

The patty was pretty thin and my cheese wasn't properly melted either.

Whadaya mean??? Five Guys is awesome, what else do you need to pray for? Also I still enjoy Angel's Drive-in in Bowness (mmm deep fried mushrooms and strawberry banana milk shake), and I just recently tried Naina's Kitchen in Ogden and the burger was pretty awesome (though ridiculously $$$ if you go for the stuffed option).

You I love to go to Angels about once a year, the same burger with the grilled mushrooms but I don't often do a milkshake. I haven't tried Naina's Kitchen yet... I will get there, we just had Chuckwagon Cafe burger it was pretty awesome just too far to drive once a week for a burger.

Haha sure. It's not my #1 (and personally I prefer Five Guys but Angel's menu goes way beyond just burgers and fries). Wednesday is a good night as they go car nights (i.e. old farts and their classics). But definitely good place to go and sit and hang out; it's the very definition of a diner.
