I'm 99% sure we've talked about this before but I can't find the thread.

Does anyone here have an asphalt driveway? Pros? Cons?

I want to get my driveway done this year and wouldn't mind throwing in a little basketball half-court/parking pad in beside my garage as well.

I'm curious about the durability, and more importantly, since my driveway slopes down towards my garage, how well they can form small swales for drainage.

Mine is 20 years old, and while it is nice for shoveling since it heats up easily and melts snow, and a bit less slippery than concrete, it has some downsides. Working on cars on jackstands can be hard on it on hot days, even a heavy motorhome can damage it, but it gets really hot here. The swales that were designed for drainage cracked and broke, and will rip off if I plow over them in winter, but I have good drains in the middle of my pad so it hasn't really affected it other than looks bad. It is nice that re-sealing and fixing cracks is inexpensive and basically makes it look brand new. Oil is very hard to remove without leaving a stain, and since I love beater cars mine looks like a duck on a Louisiana beach, but again, easy to reseal it.

Edit: Another downside is that the edges crumble off, it is good in the areas where they put a concrete curb around it, but where it joins directly to grass it looks uneven as shit and will break if you trod on the edges.
