My dad has just decided to get a summer car and is looking into getting a roadster of some sort. I was just wondering what some of you think are good and why. Also, what are the pros and cons of the various roadsters out there. He is looking at a car below 60 000- 65 000 dollars, so you can leave the SLK55 AMG and others like it out. thanks

These are the ones I could think of off the top of my head. Bare(sp?) in mind that he would like to buy new.

S2000
Z4
mazdaspeed MX5 miata
SLK230

If you're looking at an SLK, have a look at the Crossfire - you get the 3.2 L inline 6 with it and the car itself is probably more unique than the others in your list, but its a hard top coupe. The SRT version of it is supposed to be out later this year and its a Cabrio but that will likely be out of the price range given the current version is about 55 grand.

For a little more than your price range you could get into a base Vette too.

I don't imagine there are many other choices for new.

If your budget is 60-65k and you're looking at the last generation SLK, don't bother with the 230. The engine sounds like a truck. The SLK 32 has stupid power, and you can probably find a '02 one in the $60-65k range with a bit of shopping around. If power isn't a priority, the SLK 320 is awesome, the best exhaust note out of all 3 cars. It almost sounds like a bmw motor :). SLK 320's can be had in the $40k range. Seriously, go used if you're looking at SLK's, the depreciation sucks harsh, especially with the new model out in September.

I doubt you can get the new SLK 350 in the $65k range, I paid $70k for my SLK 320 after adding up the options back in '01. The new SLK looks like ass anyways, so stay away :).

The S2000 is a great summer car, great track car. I personally wouldn't enjoy driving it day to day too much because of lack of low end torque. I don't enjoy it in city driving unless you drive like an ass on the streets.... but that's just me, S2K owners don't seem to mind.

No comment on Z4, haven't driven one. It's kinda ugly...

Miatas are fun, but severly underpowered. You need to turbo it. Turbomiata's miata... now that's a fun car. Drift on demand!

I think they do??

It is more of a show/prestige car than a day to day car
still nice though, but i don;t think it is what you are looking for

Prowlers are not made anymore. I believe the last one was made in 2001.

the mazdaspeed miata is turboed.

also, my dad is not one to mod a car so buying one and modding it to be better is not an option.

i will pass on this thread to him so keep up the quality info.

C70, M3, Crossfire, Saab are Cabrios, NOT roadsters people..

Z4, SLK, S2000, TT are all great cars with their own merits, check out the new SLK coming in sept (don't listen to Rage about the new styling, he's a poopy pants ;))

Porsche Boxster might be worth checking out too...

Good luck!

VERY ugly. Nothing wrong with the 350z, but the convertable just looks wrong. My friend has a vid of one we had from the summer, I'll try to post it up, it looks BAD.

The Lexus is the SC430, IMO a great car but a lot of people find it ugly, I don't, but it's slow for the price and even it's HP, it's a boat.

SLK320 0-60 in 6.7 with 217hp, SC430 0-60 6.5 with 280HP.

The new SLK350 will be a huge improvement performance wise, I was talking to one of the salespeople and he said it shouldn't be much more expensive than the current model.

The TT is quite heavy. Still a fun car to drive though.
