Hi everyone.

I'm thinking of getting into photography. I'm most interested in taking long exposures kind of like the one below.

Can anyone recommend me a camera that will be able to do this? I'm not looking to spend a whole whack load of cash on a high baller camera... just something that gets the job done and looks good.

I just want some cool pics that I have taken to print and hang around my house.

Thanks

Any camera with a manual exposure mode on a tripod can capture that kind of shot. What's your budget?

Around $500 +/- $100.

With that budget I'd pick up a Canon S120. Not only will it fit in your pocket, it'll take shots like the one above with, but with better image quality (using a tripod of course.) It also has full manual control.

+2 the small Canons. I have an S95 (older) but still shoots incredible RAW images (as well as reg. JPEG).... very good with tripod - just set the timer to take a pic about 2-3 seconds after you push the button to eliminate any shake.

For that price I'd be looking at a Sony RX100 (http://www.amazon.ca/Sony-DSC-RX100-Sensor-Digital-Camera/dp/B00889ST2G) for sure in the compact range.

If you don't mind the size, you can get a Nikon D3200 kit (http://www.thecamerastore.com/6482-Nikon-D3200-with-18-55mm-f3-5-5-6-VR.aspx) for that same price or a bit less and will provide you with more options if you want to get deeper into the hobby.

Maybe I should note that I'm also interested in taking pics of starry nights.

I have always liked the rebels and the nice thing is if you invest in lenses and choose to get more serious down the like you can use them then. Dslr resale antecedents be pretty good to.

OK, then go another model. Not sure about the S120 but the S95 doesent really allow for enough manual adjustments of ISO and f stops with regards to starry nights.

Go through this thread and see if it meets your expectations ;) Hint: it will!

Hmmm, the RX100 seems to be the model of choice here.... maybe I should give it a shot. I did do a little bit of research on the D3200 but I am leaning towards the RX100 just for it's size.

Dark-horse candidate: Nikon J1 with two lenses for $229 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/823584-REG/Nikon_27567_1_J1_Mirrorless_Digital.html).
