I go on a hunt every so often looking for my secret desire car.

This car everyone made fun of, it didn't sell very well, and is widely regarded as the ugliest vehicle ever made.

It is a 70's AMC Gremlin, and I want it.

I mean, everyone wants a Lambo or a Ferrari, Porsche, or the most expensive exotic. They want to be baller and show off.

Not me, give me the ugly duck Gremlin!

More rare than most exotics, and even harder to find one in good condition that is worth restoring, but I came across this one today.

Gremlin (http://cgi.ebay.ca/ebaymotors/ORIGINAL-CONDITION-SURVIVOR-1977-AMC-Gremlin-X-Coupe-61K-MI-/191164967702?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item2c8251eb16&_uhb=1&forcev4exp=true#ht_49171wt_1186)

I have seen exactly 2 of these on the road, neither in good condition. Over the past 20 years, I have been hunting for one, and I can't find much. I have maybe found 5 or 6, and all of them were in horrid condition, not worth restoring at all. So when I saw that one, I got a little excited, even if it is the inline 6 and not the V8.

so, what is your secret desire car? One that you don't tell your friends because of the fear of ridicule?

I have many! I like obscure/unloved cars. Any of these I'd love to own.

1- a 4cyl First gen Fiero
2- Chevy Citation X-11
3- Any woodgrain station wagon from the 70's-early 80's.
4- Early 80's Audi 5000 or 4000
5- air cooled Westfalia
6- first gen K car with the 2.6 hemi engine
7- Chevette (though I'd want to put a s/c 3.8 in it)
8- Diesel chevette!!
9- Chevy Beretta GTU (I wanted one so bad when I was 10)
10- 85-87 Turbo Toyota SR5 pickup (unicorn)

I have more, I could go on and on....

A few odditys I already have

1991 Chevy Caprice. the beluga whale car. It's original down to the tires with 67,000 org kms.

1989 Buick Reatta coupe

1991 GMC Syclone (broken)

1986 New Yorker

1999 Buick Riviera supercharged silver arrow

Late 70's GMC Vandura Shorty. Completely black body, some nice chrome appointments, sliding side door, with the round bubble windows in the back, and converted to 4x4.

Total pedo-mobile, but also awesome for road-trip camping.

From OPs post, I thought he meant a car that you like but people make fun of. Some of the cars posted are cars that alot of car guys would love like the GNX, bmw 2002...

I'd drive a Miata any day of the week. Don't really understand nor do I really care that people bash it and call it a "chicks" car. Handles fairly well, light weight, RWD, and convertible... what's not to like. Only flaw is that it's underpowered, but they were never meant for the drag strip.

A GNX is pretty embarassing in non-car person circles. It's trashy as hell, and any girl who sees it will think "he lives in a trailer park".

Which brings me to my next one (and I almost bought, it was one of two cars I went to Vancouver to check out, but bought the Saabaru instead).

That's true. I was pretty damn excited when I saw an old school Jaguar E-type the other day near china town. That was the first time I've seen one in person. I was with a friend who thought it was just another old car.

I had been looking for one of these for quite a while. I picked this one up last year for a whopping $800 with about 115,000 km. Haven't done anything with it but I have the wheels, coilover drag suspension, tubular k-member, rear end, 6.0L LS motor and a bunch of other goodies.

1991 Chevy 454 SS. It would take a lot to get one over 400-500hp and keep it a real, fuel injected, 454 SS but I still want one. The 1990 ones aren't hard to find, but a direct-drive 3 speed automatic and a 3.73 rearend equals 3000rpm at 110km/hr. No wonder they were rated at 9mpg cty, 10mpg highway. In 1991 they came with a 4.10 rearend, but with a 4 speed overdrive transmission. 1991-1993 are a lot harder to find, especially unmodified and black with red interiors (like they all should have been).

http://hooniverse.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/1990_chevrolet_c_k_1500_454_ss_2wd-pic-4621698972090806444.jpg

1975 GMC Gentleman Jim. I think there were only 1000 produced. Nothing special performance wise, just a trim package. All were black and gold with "Gentleman Jim" on the box sides. I don't know if they were ever for sale in Canada. You see one for sale in the States every once in a while and they're cheap, but they're usually also fucked. $2500 would get you one but you'd be into it for over $25,000 by the time it was done probably.

Interesting you post a ghia. The Type 34 Ghia is a car I have always wanted. Unfortunately the guy who runs the T34 ghia registry always tries to get in the middle of every deal to act as a broker between the buyer and seller (for a fee of course).

On the subject of the OP, a 1st or 2nd gen Miata falls under that category for me. Super gay, but probably a blast to drive.

I'm a big fan of the '70's Gremlin too. Its the only classic car that I would even consider wasting any money on.

I would totally butcher it though, it wouldn't be stock for long. Would probably end up doing an "Overhaulin'" job on it, V8 swap, lowering, updated wheels, smoked signals blah blah blah.

The only other desire car I have is a Lotus Exige, but that doesn't work so well for me, since it barely has the space to put a condom in the trunk, let alone a set of golf clubs.

I'm considering putting most of those people on my ignore list, lol.

Or maybe the mods could implement a new "user CP" list, not ignore, or "friends", but "CAUTION: THIS USER MAY BE ILLITERATE" list, and a big yellow warning comes up with every post I read of theirs.

I do because of top gear :)

And I have always wanted a Isuzu Vehicross. Styling is not for everyone, but I like being weird.

Shit, I have no idea, maybe you should post it on a car site or something. They'd probably know.

Embarrassing secret desire car? '88 Pontiac Fiero GT. Wanted one when I was a kid, still kinda do even though I know they're pretty rubbish cars. Apart from that, maybe a Bricklin.

Honestly hardly anyone seems to know what it is, from my experience. I'm especially surprised if beyonder's know it, mainly because I've even seen spotted threads on here where people have no idea what Countach's are. Maybe it's a generational thing.

I also didn't know there was a Top Gear episode with this on it

I know what it is because there used to be a driving video game where you could select one as your vehicle. Then I learned what it was.

My secret desire car: '88 Fiero. (Preferably with a supercharged 3800 or small block V8)

I also always liked the exterior of the Mako Shark style of Corvettes; preferably 81/82 model. They were just so unique looking. Too bad that stock they were slower than shit.

Never made it to production. Got as far as magazine test drives but it failed crash tests. The handful that were made got donated to tech schools.

-recovering beretta nut, been through 6 L-bodies... Moved onto more power.

I've never seen a Beretta vert...and I haven't seen a GTU since 88 when I was in school. I loved those cars back then.

Oddly enough they made a Cutlass ragtop, same platform as the Beretta is it not?

One of the heaviest, slowest, over-hyped cars ever made. But I've always wanted one since BTTF! They actually don't look half bad done up with a drop and rims either.
