Many cities in California are now actively promoting removal of water sucking lawns, and will pay citizens anywere between 50 cents to $1 per foot to *not* grow a lawn on their residence.

Cochrane has had turf buyback for at least ten years. I suspect many other communities in Southern Alberta do as well. I thought this was common knowledge by now, but I guess not.
