Hey guys, hoping you can point me in the right direction here. My current router, an Asus RT56N-U, is on it's last legs. Wireless file transfers take forever, needs to be reset multiple times a day, etc. It lives on a cramped desk, right beside the Shaw modem, which puts out a lot of heat, and there's not much airflow. I use it mostly wirelessly, except for having my XBoxes and my receiver directly connected, the receiver for streaming FLAC files. My needs are basic, but I want a router that will last. This one has been good for 3 years. Any model suggestions for how I use it?

I bought a Netgear R7000 and it is great so far, no issues, great firmware, great signal.

If you don't mind spending more money I'd do the Asus rt-ac68u.
Fastest router I've ever had

Increase the cooling in the cabinet or a hotter router will die even faster. Also consider a 70$ UPS for the devices in that area - neighbour got struck by lightning and took out one of my UPS' - no doubt saved 100s of $$ in potential damage.

The R7000 looks great, but I don't need that kind of capability. I don't plan on going AC yet, not for some time really, and all I'm most concerned about is streaming my music to the receiver. My daughter does the gaming, so I'd like something quick for her. I have the two XBoxes on a gigabit switch, so gigabit is a must. I was looking at the Asus RT-N66U, thinking that might be the way to go. Any comments on that one?

:werd: I've read numerous times and truly believe that power issues cause many routers to have problems.

I'm in the same boat. Thinking if I have to replace I may as well pick up an AC router now, rather than cheaping out now and regretting it later. Any deals on the r7000?

Has anyone tried the Linksys WRT1900AC?

Its gotten really good reviews but the price tag for it is astronomical.

Just invest into a good Asus router.

R7000 here as well. Great unit. I can get a weak signal 4 houses down. Saw that they were on sale for $159 at BB and FS last month.

How many wifi connections can the r7000 handle before getting bogged down?

BUMP

Memex = $209
Staples $179 so I'm gonna do a PM.

Is it worth to buy the 4 year IPR on a router?

Don't bother. In 4 years its going to be worth the same as the IPR. No one these days use routers longer than that anyways

Funny they finally have the same part#... Lucky for you! :D

IPR isn't worth it on a router but you should invest in a UPS if you haven't already.

I picked up a R7000 for the same price at Staples in June to replace my DIR 655... very happy with it! :D

It will only slow down when more devices are used. You could have 100 devices "connected" to it but if you (1) are the only one actually using the Internet it will be fast.

I have maybe 12 devices connected on mine but when I come home and use my laptop I am getting full rates.
