Looking to get rid if some grass in the backyard and put some mulch down. My question is that I want to pull the grass out and lay some weed barrier but what is the best way to get the grass out?

Cut where you want the grass to stop and pull it out like a piece of carpet.

This.

Rent yourself a sod cutter from any number of home improvement stores or rental companies.

I just went through this, I removed most of my backyard grass as dead spots and wear made it ugly, i rented a sod cutter, set it to 2 inches (overkill for sure) and ripped it out, the problem I had was that the grass was so dead it didn't come up like carpet, it broke apart into little chunks, it sucked. But it was very effective at removing.

Tomco, I took 2 pickup truck loads to the dump, one was most of the grass, the second was most of the dirt, lay a tarp in the truck bed, so when the level of dirt gets low enough you can just pull the tarp out and drag most of the dirt with it.
Payed when i took the grass, free with the dirt. If i were to do it again...I would rent a bin and have someone else haul it, or rent a dump trailer to make it easier.

Toss it into your black bin, repeat the following week until done?

Haha, I do this all the time. I've shipped out toilets, carpet and underpad. Currently on my second week of tossing two privacy walls from the backyard.

Did the same thing with a stack of bricks. Took 2 months but a few a week, no one said anything.

Yeah, I ended up taking it to the dump and it was mostly dead spots from the dog pissing on it so like theken said, it didn't come up in one go and I had to end up digging it up. I didn't use that machine but rather I just cut out long sections with a drywall knife and ended up rolling it up. Kind of a pain but it's done! Unfortunately, it didn't come up uniformly and it was deeper in some spots than others and so the ground was somewhat uneven.

Going to the dump, it cost me 15 bucks and it is not classified as organic so it didn't qualify for the free disposal before June 1st. I did do the black bin dumping for a bit but decided to just get rid of it in one go. If I have to rip it up again, I'll use that machine. Looks pimp!!

Buy a goat, they eat lots of grass and they fertilize your yard too :)
