I just picked up one of these bad boys but not sure how functional it will be since I don't know anything about cameras.

Anyway, good or bad camera? I plan to use this camera for my trips to Vancouver, Las Vegas and Paris.

for basic point and shoot you'll love it, however for traveling I am wagering you're gonna wish you had the extra features or zoom. Very very compact. What did you pay if you dont mind me asking?

Ummmm it does have zoom.

max_boost - I've read alot of good things about this camera. I'm sure most people on this board will say it is an inferior camera because it is a Sony but it is a good cam. 21mm thick and 5.0 mp for $800 is a good deal too.

I have a Sony DSCF717 and it has been an excellent camera.

3.0X optical

Nice camera. The Carl Zeiss lenses in the Sony cameras are REALLY nice. The true test for that camera will be how well it performs in low light situations.

just because you start the sentence with "no flame intended" doesnt mean you can speak from your ass and get away with it.

nobody wants to buy a grey market camera from ebay with no warranty.

Going rate on EBay is $600-$800 CAD. If you cared to actually look none of these cameras ship from within Canada. So then you have to consider things like shipping ($40-$70 including insurance) and don't forget about the duties/taxes and brokerage fees that would be applied once the item arrives.

Everybody does like to save money some people just know how to and some don't.

hate yo break it to ya, but when you take cameras back to FS and shit, all they do is send them back for manufacturers warrenty, and you get that anyways.

Many cameras on ebay are imported from China to the US and their warranties are not valid in North America.

This is especially common among with the Canon Digital SLR cameras.

so if it is going to be $800+ off ebay... you might as well save yourself the hassle and pay the same at Vistek (or even less at Don's Photo *shameless plug*). If you get the camera locally you will generally be protected at LEAST from DOA.

you keep tellin yourself that

your right tho, if its under the manufactures warranty, it does go back to manufacture. but if its a service plan its done locally. do your homework boy :banghead:

Never buy high end electronics off E-bay. I would rather pay more and know I can take it back and get it fixed by someone locally.

roopi, your camera got a very good review. One of the better ones that Sony has put out.

The new one however is not so good. The lens is supposed to be better, but offers more distortion. The image quality, even though it has 8 MP has gone down.

I was actually thinking up upgrading to the 828. Looks like I better do some more reasearch though. Thanks for the link.

Ok cool stuff guys, camera was $800, kinda expensive but this is my first camera and plan to keep it for awhile. Sounds like it will be quite useful since the ladies like to take a lot of pictures! haha I'll spend the next few days reading stuff over to make sure I know what I am doing:thumbsup:

That's an awesome camera... photo quality won't be exceptional, i've seen quite a few sample shots on the web, but that's not really what you buy an ultra compact camera for.
Remember, a picture with even the lowest of the low quality camera is better than the picture you didn't take cause you didn't feel like carrying your 50lb slr with you that day.

But for a trip to Paris, I would try to trade with someone for a camera with better photo quality, just to make sure you're not disappointed.

What I ment was MORE zoom, I'm sorry to say but for 800 bucks there are so many better cameras you could have bought. If you're going to places like those, wont you want the best pics possible for the money? Oh well, better than nothing. Personally I would have saved yourself 300 bucks and got a Canon S400, that is a far better cam for the money.

I think size of the camera is a good feature. I would sooner have a camera that I could put in my pocket than one that needs a bag and has some extra features.

I have multiple cameras. They all server different purposes.

Good buy dude, hope you post an album or something when you're back from your trips.

As for shooting tips, take a few hour and read up on some tutorials on megapixel.net. Very informative over there.

When I was in the market for a new camera, which was only about 2 weeks ago :nut: I really considered getting the T1 because of the 2.5 inch LCD, and obviously it's thin profile. But I'm much happier with my V1 :D

I agree. With a small camera, there's less disincentive to leave it at home. I keep my S230 with me regulary. The F2 is for special photo shoots only.

Ya, I agree, size is a big thing for me too. Theres a big difference between "small" and "so small that you can put it in your pocket and still not look like you have snooker balls". Thats why I got my dimage xt, the size, like this one, is just perfect.
