View Full Version : Best falafel?

Is there anywhere in town that offers freshly fried falafel? I have only found places that heat up precooked ones when you order and it just ends up too soggy.

Byblos Bakery makes them daily and they are the best I've had

my son was saying that Jerusalem Shawarma & Bakery does them fresh fried. I hate that almost everywhere in Calgary reheats them...so gross.

By "makes them daily" do you mean "freshly fried". These are not the same thing, of course. ;)

Calgary has perhaps the worst falafel scene of any city i've ever been in, around the world. Every single place pre-fries and then microwaves upon order, making for a soggy disappointment. There used to be a Jewish shop across from Chinook that would fry them upon order, but they closed about 10 years ago. Not sure if there are any other shops in Calgary that fry them fresh. I basically stopped ordering falafel when I lived in Calgary, now that I spend most of my time in the states I can finally get decent falafels again. :bigpimp:

Went here the other day and it was amazing! Don't let the "décor" fool you.

So pissed I worked one block over for more than a year and never knew it was there.

I used to always walk down to Chick Pea and get the falafel salad or falafel wrap when I worked downtown... only two things I miss about working down there is Shawarma King and Chick Pea for lunches :P

Worst place in calgary, they pre slice their meat and are skimpy on the toppings. The donair was so dry it was like cardboard.

Never going there again.

The original on Edmonton trail is still good. The satellite stores are definitely lacking.

I had the Falafel platter and it was really tasty, there was a bit of a wait but it was worth it.

93% approval rating on 214 votes is pretty good.

Been going here for years. Hands down favorite for me although I usually just go for the donairs.

What would you guys recommend to eat going to Jerusalem Shawarma for the first time? I'm a big fan of both the chicken shawarma and beef donair. Should I get the sandwich or the platter?

The original Cedars Deli on Edmonton Trail was always pretty good. The Market Mall location is pretty sub-bar I agree, but that's the result of making it a chain like location at the mall. Haven't been to the original location lately, but I'm sure it's better than the mall crap.

Just tried the Lamb, Chicken and Mixed Shawarma from Jerusalem Shawarma and I have to admit it is the best tasting shawarma I have had to date! Compared to all the places I've had shawarmas, this place is top notch and the food is so fresh

+1 for Jerusalem, love that this place is just down the street from me.

Just don't go if you're in a rush. Even if it's not busy your order can still take a while.

I found this newish place Lebanese Fusion, Barlow and 37 ave N. They really have the customer service thing down and the food is great. Been there twice and no reason to stop going there.

Jerusalem Shawarma just opened a second location on the corner of 16th Ave and 2nd St NW.

Another alternative for people who bail on the Carl's Jr lineup.

How does it compare to the original?

Haven't been to the original location in a little while now... but the Large shawarma was smaller than I remember. They ran out and switched to a new batch of hummus for my order and it was oddly runny (batch before looked fine). Other than that, the food tasted great. Love the chewy outer layer of bread on their shawarmas
