Few questions for the outdoorsmen on here.

Where can I get live bait like night crawlers and minnows around town. Also where can I get firewood for camping at a good deal?

And does anyone have some good campgrounds within a couple hours of the city with good fishing?

Anyone tracking down any trout so far this season?

Where do you plan on using live bait fish within Alberta?

From Ab fishing regs: (http://albertaregulations.ca/fishingregs/general-regs.html#fishingwithbait)

It Is Unlawful To:

-Use live fish for bait.

As far as campgrounds go, with good fishing...

K-country, fishing is "meh", some good lakers in Spray. Decent Bulls, 'Bows and Cutty's in Upper and Lower K.

Southern AB: Livingstone, Oldman, Crowsnest, all great trout fishing on the fly.

The cheapest firewood is the wood you cut yourself with a $5 permit. Next down the line is buying a chord from someone. Then there's wooddepot.ca. Next expensive is buying bulk from Burnco. Then all the way down (up?) to buying it by the bundle at the PP campgrounds at $8/bundle. For the convenience alone, I just buy it by the bundle at the campground. But I don't have a truck to haul it in either.

AFAIK there is no live bait allowed in Alberta with a sport fishing licence. There are some places that make an exception for maggots though, like the Bow in certain areas.

Okay to clarify I was actually just looking for frozen minnows so I guess not live bait. Nightcrawlers are allowed though no?

For better fishing that isn't over run by hordes of people, you should probably head NE/East of the city - there are some very nice spots out there but those secrets aren't given up easily.

What kind of fish are you looking for? Fishing from shore or a boat?

Hoping to snag some rainbows from the shore. Pretty new to fishing so I dont really know what I'm doing haha.

Hour (maybe less - 64km from Deerfoot and Stony on the north side) from downtown Calgary, paved all the way with the exception of a 1/4 mile of gravel to drive on for the last bit. Stocked trout with winter aeration, low camping fees with only services being outhouses and nice fire pits, don't even need a boat...

Chain lakes is also guaranteed rainbows from the shore. An hour south of Calgary, power and water campsites but no fire pits other than communal ones. Serious fishing spot though. With worms and even better success, corn, you'll limit out. Being new to fishing though I'd suggest going over thoroughly this years regs.

Daily trout limit of 5 on lake pictured above (PP2 zone), no bait ban either for those that like to bait fish. 5,000 21cm rainbows stocked in 2013 - good amount for this small lake.

Yea I thought about doing Chain Lakes but was turned away cause of the communal fire pits. Is it not too bad at the pits or rather busy?

Any idea who sells night crawlers?

Canadian Tire, Bass Pro, Wholesale Sports, The Fishing Hole?

Am guessing - don't use live bait myself.

It better be A LOT bigger as that is $10 a bag and the campgrounds sell it for $7.50. LOL

I found out that you can go to bluegrass over by cross iron, and for $85 we can fill the box of our trucks with split wood. That sounds like a heck of a lot more than 10 bags...

Every time we've stayed there, there's never been anyone at the communal firepit. We've just been there to fish. It's not really "camping" per se. Sucks not having a fire, so we rarely go.

Man when I looked into that last year it was TONS more than that. Something like $250 I think. They were telling me over the phone it was in chords. 1/4 chord was something like $90. 1/2 cord was $160. etc.

Ill check it out next week.

Yeah, Birch is $530/chord or $195 for 1/3 chord (6 foot level pickup box). Little less for Pine.

I called them and checked. That's the price for a 1/4 CORD of firewood. They don't have anything where you can just go and "fill your box".

A firewood cord is a physical measurement of 4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet. When picking up your wood at Blue Grass, the quantity is based on the measurement of your pick-up truck box. For example, a half ton pick-up truck with a short box (6 ft.) will hold a 1/3 of a cord stacked level with the top of the truck box.

So Bow Point Nursery (link (http://www.bowpointnursery.com/other-products/firewood/)) at $180 a cord is not a bad deal (discovered from an ExtraSlow post in another thread) - not sure what partial cord pricing is but probably 1/2 cord is $90 or so. No one answers the telephone out there so can't tell what type of wood it is - certainly not birch at that price. But for just general fire pit burning it would probably be okay.

Figured I would bump this thread. Anyone out there having any luck fishing from shore anywhere in decent proximity to Calgary? I've been out to many spots and haven't caught a damn thing yet.

Went out today and picked up 1/2 cord of pine for $90 +GST from Bow Point Nursery - very dry and seasoned as well. There is poplar mixed into the pile but it's easy enough to pick out the pine if that's what you want.

Also, sounds like there's some fishing to be had at the place I posted pics of above.

I get my wood from them. The bags are considerably larger than ones I've seen at campgrounds. Not the best deal you can find in town, but very reasonable. Good wood so far. I use them mainly for the free delivery, roommate only has a car and I'm rarely in town at a convenient time to pick my own up.

For anyone that's interested, the place I posted pictures for above is called Midway Reservoir and it's about 12.5 miles east of Highway 2 on secondary Highway 581 (that's the Carstairs turn-off). Camping prices are now at $15 a night - no services aside from fire pits and outhouses. You've got to bring everything including your wood for the fire pits - there may be well water (manual pump) but I can't remember for sure. Midway Reservoir is located about a quarter mile north of highway 581 - that 1/4 mile is the only section of gravel road you have to travel down.

I bought from wooddepot as well. Look slightly larger than the campground bags. I have no complaints. They stacked it in my garage when I was at work.

Anyone wanting FREE firewood there's a tree that fell and someone cut it up, has a sign up for free firewood.

Honestly, it'll still need splitting and maybe cutting as they're large pieces off the poplar tree. It was still there as of yesterday. Can verify tonight if anyone wants.

Address is approx. 4907 Viceroy Pl NW Calgary.

you can use live bait like worms and such in ponds and lakes, you can use live bait fish, only if you catch them from the same water source like minnows, etc.

no live bait in open waters.

How do you get THAT from:

It Is Unlawful To:

-Use live fish for bait.
and:
-The possession of live bait fish is prohibited. All bait fish kept must be killed immediately. (http://www.albertaregulations.ca/fishingregs/general-regs.html)
