View Full Version : Feels like a burp stuck in my chest?

So Wednesday morning I woke up having a feeling like a burp or gas is stuck in my chest. Or that feeling like you didn't swallow a pill properly or without enough water. Anyone get that?

I burp very little when I try and make it go away. It doesn't hurt. It doesn't give me any trouble breathing or swallowing. It just feels weird and is kind of annoying. It helps a bit by drinking a shit ton of water, but comes back after 10-15 minutes. And all day Thursday I didn't feel it, but it came back today.

I'm reading that it might be a light/early symptom of heartburn or acid reflux, but those seem a little more severe. I'm going to try buying some Tums, maybe it'll get rid of it. Anyone know what it might be from experience?

Not really. I just had a regular dinner a couple hours before bed.

I've had this a few times. I'm not sure if it's related to acid reflux, as I have GERD and deal with regular heartburn.

I can't say what it comes from but I can sympathize that it's fucking annoying lol.

Try and drink a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with mother, in a glass of water. Supposed to help with indigestion and heart burn.

Bolus of worms? 1 in 4 people have worms. Its almost guaranteed that if you live on planet earth, you will get a worm of some sort at some point in your life.

Eating a few meals of ground pumpkin seed with some shaved carrots and a solid night out with some strong alcohol usually kills em off. Mouthwash will get the nasties that lurk between your teeth.

Ya man, I used to regularly get this, now it's only on occasion, but it has to do with acid reflux/heartburn. I take medication for it, but it still happens when I eat certain things.

I had the same feeling and was diagnosed with acid reflux.

I take a proton pump inhibitor (nexium, pantoloc and various other ones out there) and avoid onions, tomato, garlic, caffeine and it's been relatively under control for the past few years.

PPI are just a mask, and they do not solve the underline problem. The cause of gerd/acid reflux in most cases is caused by lack of stomach acid. Apple cider vinegar mixed with water is the only thing that has worked for me. I'm on a 18 month waiting list to see a specialist as I have heart burn, back pain, and constant regurgitation.
Also for people with digestion issues mix 1/4 cup pure aloe vera juice with water everyday. Warning that shit tastes nasty.

Whatever happened to prayer? :)

Anyway, aloe vera and tea tree oil cures just about anything.

do you smoke weed or drink lots of alcohol? Those two items make the symptoms worse.

That is a lot of relatively young people with the same symptoms. I wonder if there is an environmental factor or diet factor. Probably GMO grains from monsanto are fucking us all up. Instead of fixing the GMO seeds they just buy shares in astrazeneca and feed us daily omeprazole.

Just wanted to give this a bump for anyone who is experiencing bad heartburn gas/bloating. I had basically been a mess for the last 5 years and want to give a big shout out to a local company AOR for there product that finally gave me my life back. Its basically just Mastic Gum which eradicates h. Pylori.

I have had this for years and it's acid reflux, I have a prescription for it, I suggest you do the same if it keeps happening.

Ranitidine FTW.

London Drugs generic 150mg $10.00 ish for a bottle of 50.
Waaay cheaper than Zantac, and really exactly the same.

I use rabeprazole it's generic for something else, but it's prescription, I take one every couple of days.

I used to be like that, take what ever prescription the doctor game me. It just happens to be that Nexium "The Purple Pill" is the second most prescribed/top selling drug Source (http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/825053). Sure it worked for a couple months, went back for another check-up and was told I'd be on them for life. Once I heard that I knew i had to do this on my own.
Most times its actually low stomach acid, especially as you get older your stomach produces less acid, and the prescription drugs just make it worse Source (http://www.westonaprice.org/book-reviews/why-stomach-acid-is-good-for-you-by-jonathan-wright-and-lane-lenard/).
The low stomach acid environment is a winter wonderland for bacteria and parasites to over grow. The main culprit H. pylori which actually corkscrews into your stomach lining and eats away at your cells. This bacteria affects your lower sphincter causing the gas/bloating which bubbles up acid into your LES valve and causing IBS symptoms.
Everyone's situation was different but this was mine.
Try weaning yourself off these drugs and then use mastic gum to eradicate the bacteria along side L-glutamine powder to repair your gut with a good probiotic to help the good bacteria out. There is zero downside and side effects to this. My condition was so bad that I couldn't even eat without regurgitating, just trying to spread some knowledge.

I get a flare up of bad acid reflux a few times a year. I find taking the prescription PPI Proton Pump Inhibitors to work well during a flare up, but I would prefer not to be on them daily.

I bought a wedge pillow which keeps my upper body elevated in bed at night. I have also cut out all carbonated beverages, tomatoes, onions.

For the most part, mine is well controlled.

Probalby wouldn't hurt to get a referral for an endoscopy so they can have a look and see if there is any errosion, take a sample and check for barretts esophogus etc.

I've had two endoscopies after experiencing weird problems like this. The first endoscopy was normal as I had been on prilosec for ages and the doctor didn't do a biopsy. The second endoscopy 2 months ago was after I had gone off the prilosec for 18 months and I was getting bad symptoms everyday - the doctor took a biopsy and I was diagnosed with a disease called Eosinophilic Esophagitis. Now I have to be on prilosec for the rest of my life and even then I will still get the symptoms from time to time.

Interesting. I'd have never guessed that it could be caused by LOW stomach acid. Thanks for posting!

Mrs. Penguin and I both suffer a bit, so we raised the head of the bed by about 2 inches, seems to help a bit. I also find that if I cut out pop, alcohol and tomatoey things (Pizza, Pasta) that I'm much better.
But who wants to live like that? :)

Update: Yup. It was acid reflux. Doc gave me some pills. I took one and I haven't had it since. I did cut back on the acidic foods for a couple weeks afterwards, but man, as a side effect, those pills gave me the worst diarrhea I've ever had.

Similar thing happened to me, except it was extremely painful (Like food stuck in your throat). It would surge on and off. *Exactly* the same feeling/sensation to having not chewed a huge ball of meat/bread enough and having it get stuck on the way down.

Basically 2 things it likely was (for me):

1) Acid reflux/heartburn (original diagnosis, prescribed ant-acids)

2) Diffuse esophageal spasms (which is what it turned out I had)

I got chest x-rays, swallow tests (which I didn't end up doing on a specialist's advice), and the whole deal, which found nothing.

That's what it was for me, so maybe something to ask your doctor about. They went away on their own and its been at least a year since I had it. Next step would have been an endoscopy if it didn't go away, and those have their own risks.

Your symptoms and my symptoms sound exactly the same and when i was on the ppi's i had no syptoms virtually for about 2 years. It was only when I went off the medicine that the symptoms came back and then i was diagnosed with this disease. I have the spasms too. Now im on an elimination diet which sucks, to find out what food is causing me the issue.

Did you also get alot of saliva when you had this feeling - that you basically had to spit out.

I don't recall the saliva part specifically, but probably because I was swallowing as much as possible trying to get rid of the pain. Nothing excessive. Drinking water hurt depending on where I was in the spasm, it either made it way worse and increased pressure, or gave me a few seconds of relief. If I was salivating, it was probably because my body thought food was stuck in my throat and it wanted to give me something to swallow and clear it. The pain was always right behind my sternum. Never had the issue before, never had it since - it bothered me occasionally for about a 6 month period and then went away on it's own. Hopefully it doesn't return.

My disease is where the food reacts with some other sort of allergy (pollen, dust) and creates an allergic response in my esophagus, the response then shuts my esophagus and im unable to swallow anything until its finished - typically 15 mins to 30 mins sometimes up to an hour. Lots of pain, feeling like throwing up, cant drink anything afterward, lots of hiccups afterwards.

Mine was different for sure, the more I read about the issues you were having. I could still swallow if i wanted too (or at least between spasms), and I never had hiccups or anything. It also seemed to be unrelated to food/drink, since sometimes I'd get it in the middle of the day, and sometimes at night 8-10 hours after the last time I ate. Never had the urge to throw up, just surging on/off extreme pain right behind my sternum. It may have even been brought on by stress (which of course is one of the many possible causes along with Cancer and everything else haha).
