Staples has the Netgear R7000 on for $179, you won't beat that:

and a thorough review:

For not much more than a "decent" router, you might as well get the best, IMO, since it's on sale.

Also note Memory Express uses a one-letter different part number, even though it's the identical product, and won't price beat anyone.

R7000 is the best. Had it for months now, no issues, super fast, great coverage.

I bought this one: http://www.memoryexpress.com/Products/MX48122

I don't know how it stacks up to the Nighthawk, but the ASUS has been awesome so far. Excellent speeds, coverage, and no problems.

These models will seem pricey, but trust me, I've had a couple crappy routers in my time. Just bite the bullet and get a good one.

Oh, and avoid streaming media over wireless if you can. It'll perform much better on a wired connection.

^^^ My R7000 has no problem streaming 1080P with DTS 5.1 audio to my HT, zero glitches, performance issues, or dropouts. You wouldn't know it wasn't hard wired, and that's just using the 2.4 GHz N band.

I've had no problems streaming HD over wireless either, on 2.4 N as well for the extra range. AppleTV downloads movies while it's playing as fast as it can, and usually 20 mins into the movie the whole thing's downloaded, so there's tons of bandwidth on wireless even for 4K streaming.

I use a 2wire 2700HG in bridge mode for extra range I can stream HD fine anywhere, and use a 128 ram asus DD-wrt black knight router, (wireless sucks)

R7000 for sure. I love mine. Getting double the speedtest results on wireless compared to the stock telus gateway.

+1. I have this router, my house streams usually 2-3 HD streams wirelessly through my NAS. Works like a charm!
Spend the extra money, especially because you have a bigger house.

I have a Netgear R6250 only because I couldnt find the R7000 when I needed to replace my home router :banghead:
I'd recommend either of them

I got this one too, quite happy with it so far. Streaming via chromecast has been good too. Love the extra features like the integrated torrent download manager and turning any external hard drive into a NAS.

I bought the R7000 yesterday as well. Fantastic unit. 5GHz is the best thing ever.
