Excited for the draft tomorrow. Any of the top 4 will be a decent choice for the Flames. Obviously hoping for Ekblad because Seth Jones fell to #4 last year.

It would be nice if we can get Sam Reinhart, then we can start collecting all the Reinharts :). But I think it's more likely we'll get Bennett or Draisaitl

D'z Nutz

Florida will likely take Eklbad if they don't trade their pick to Vancouver.
Buffalo either Bennett or Reinhart
General consensus seems to be the Oilers are leaning towards Draisaitl.
Calgary takes whatever Buffalo doesn't.

Personally I'm hoping for Reinhart.

Jonas Hiller - 2 year deal, $4.5M AAV

He's a character player. Great in the room and well liked by teammates. It is an overpayment but the flames need a new player to complain about since butler is gone and him coming in at sub 2million wouldn't make him a whipping boy haha

Treliving said at the news conference we had the money to spend to get to the floor so he felt it was okay to overpay a bit since the spot needed filling and there were other teams trying to get him (including the oilers  ).

Hopefully Hiller comes back to form here and provides a good presence in net with Ramo backing up. Raymon is pumped to be back in the home town.

I'm not sure if Engelland is a result of low defence FA, and the ones available signed some fat fucking contracts before... oh well, hopefully he can fill a 2nd/3rd line D role solidly

Not a bad pick up for 750K.. Still a pretty young player and might do really well here in Calgary. Pretty good move by the Flames.

as someone who watched Winnipeg all season here, lets hope he makes a very big step forward. He was useless most of the year here. 4th line and benched for the back half

Agreed completely. As a Jets fan I was glad to see him go.

His biggest problem was that he had a couple lucky point streaks which kept him on the roster, but then would go 20+ games without a goal.

If you read around on flames boards (especially Calgary Puck) you would think the Flames are going to win the Stanley Cup this year.

I've never seen a fan base put so much stock in preseason games in my life.

I don't think anyone is claiming the Flames are going to win the cup.... but our prospect pool is developing nicely and it gives fans something to look forward to and get excited about.

I would think most fans start every season with a little bit of optimism. Unless you're an Oilers fan... they already know they have another season of basement dwelling.

As someone who frequents Calgary puck this couldn't be further from the truth. Every single thread is about finishing dead last or a top three pick. There is even threads about what coach is next after Calgary finishes last this year.

Yea, most CPers are realistic about our chances. There are a few oddballs here and there that think otherwise.

Going in this year with low expectations. The team can do nothing but impress me.

I don't think we're going to bottom out like everyone says we will, but we're nowhere near playoff contention for a few years either until the kids develop. As long as we have a few nice highlight reels once in a while from our young guys, it'll be a fun ride for me.

What threads are you reading?

Most are just some excitement about certain players. Others are already talking about next year and the hopes of getting McDavid. Many are of the thought we won't be last but in the bottom 5 so the chance at McDavid is not terrible high.

I don't think I have read a thread where people are talking about being in the playoff picture let alone winning the cup lol.

There is little difference from the Oilers of a few years ago and the Flames now. You have a bunch of prospects who haven't done anything in the NHL. They could be good, they could be awful you don't really know until they play the games.

Also that thread on CP just perpetuates non-truths. They pick and choose quotes to demean the Oilers, Fans, and people from Edmonton in general. It's actually quite sad. There is plenty of evidence of Fans being angry and not "drinking the koolaid" as it is put in that thread yet that all gets glossed over.

But the game is played on the Ice and in my mind if we don't make the playoffs the season is a failure. I could care less if the flames finish above or below us outside the playoffs, we both lose.

Personally I'd like to see the Oilers and Flames both make the playoffs consistently. But that won't happen until Anaheim/Chicago/St. Louis etc take a step back as their players get older.

LOL. Kettle... black. You (an Oilers fan) come into a Flames thread accusing their fanbase of over hyping the team, when in fact, 95% of the CPers are pretty realistic about where the team will finish this year.

It's not bashing because it's stating the truth. Edmonton is no good.

It's better to get it fixed now then to have it happen later in the season or a year from now, I dont think he would have had much of an impact on the Flames this year anyways so the only thing it hurts is his Junior Team, Kingston, who may only see a half season or less out of him, and sadly likely not playing for Team Canada in the World Juniors. I think the latter is the most dissapointing IMO. He would have been one of the leaders and top point producers, which calgary hasn't had on a WJ team in pretty much forever.

On to Good News: Johnny Gaudreau is on the opening day roster and has been assigned #13 for his Jersey # cant wait to see him play live tomorrow night!!

Setoguchi fumbling and taking out Engelland on that first goal just deflated the team.

Other than that what's there to say. They're a top 5 team in the league and we're a bottom 5 team. Just look at their d depth. Our #4 up last year (butler) got waived by the Blues and plays in the AHL. Our current #3 dman is a guy we got from the Blues for next to nothing. They simply have a better team.

And Brodie just got paid!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Brodie is a $4.65M AAV. Interesting: his first year is $3.9M -- a nod to Giordano, who has one year left on his deal at $4M. (1/2)

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
The rest is spread out evenly over four years. There is a limited NTC and a no-move clause starting in Year III, when he becomes eligible.

Do you mean they literally can't? or they probably can't come to an agreement? Just want to make sure I'm not missing something. As with Giordano you've seen what multiple other people of his skill set have been getting paid. Often you can save a few dollars signing to an early extension vs waiting until contract year. Showing loyalty/value to a player like himself. I agree that Russell would be a tricky one, but I figure the Cap'n not as much unless they are far apart on value.

I personally wouldn't want to wait nor expect any FA/young talent to replace either of those two based upon how they play now. Russell could use a better partner that is for sure. Engelland was a bad signing from the get go.

They literally can't talk extension until next year. Part of the CBA.

I thought Engelland was a decent partner for Russell. Flames needed a bigger body on the back-end and he was that. If he was paid $1M less, there wouldn't be as much scrutiny.

You can't re-up them until they're in the final year of their current deal.

At this point you basically give Gio whatever he asks for on a 4 or 5 term deal.

There is a limit on how early an extension can be signed, not exactly sure what it is though.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Brodie is a $4.65M AAV. Interesting: his first year is $3.9M -- a nod to Giordano, who has one year left on his deal at $4M.

Kid knows his place.

+1. Probably wouldn't get paid if not for Gio.
Good mentality for all the other kids in the lineup.

Nice to see the level of respect there.
