Android, and new, not used. I'm borrowing my wife's iPad mini way too much, lol.

I keep waiting for Samsung to announce a waterproof 8" which is vaguely rumoured, but I think I'll just get a cheap one until then.

Suggestions?

(Oh, and I do know of the Xperia waterproof 10" tablet, but I prefer something smaller)

It's bloody hard to get a "cheap" sub $200 8 inch tablet. If you're willing to drop an inch, Asus MeMOPad 7 and Samsung Galaxy Tab3 7 inch are both ~$160 before tax. Neither will be as fast or responsive as a Nexus 7 2nd gen or an iPad mini, but the Nexus 7 2nd gen 16gb is only ~$250, vs $420 starting for the iPad mini.

Food for thought. Also, the Nexus 7 is pretty much bloatware free because of Google's Nexus program (why I LOVE my Nexus 4 phone.... no bloatware, nothing but pure Android :D)

Lenovo has a few tablets that fit into your size and price requirements.

Just bought three Asus memo pad HD7's. Good for the kids in the truck and for surfing beyond from the couch. Ncix was cheaper than memex.

I'd go Nexus 7 as well. Really like it for my movies, NetFlix and edbooks. Going to see how it likes storing and displaying a few GB of engineering drawings and field abuse soon.

Nexus 7 is ugly in my opinion. I was looking for an 8" for my wife as well and was going to get the nexus 7 2nd gen, but all that blank space on top and bottom is a total kill for me, seems like such a waste of space. Once she saw an 8" tablet, Nexus 7 just looked so small.

For 8" in that price range

Dell Venue 8 is a good option, right now at $169 at futureshop. Got my wife a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 mainly because she liked the looks and I liked the fact that it had a smart cover, and it was for sale at $239 at the time. I don't know too many things about the android venue tablets, my co-worker has the 7 inch version, and I am a big fan of the Venue 8 Pro which is the windows 8.1 based one, my new travel companion. The pro version has been fantastic, so I assume the android version are good too.

I need local buy, I've got a 7 hour flight to Maui next week, lol.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, my Playbook was 7" though, and it always seems just barely too small. I'll have to play with the nexus in store and see if I like it.

There is not much competition in the ~7" / $200 range with the Nexus 7 (2013) around. Nothing can touch it for the price. You also get a year of no questions asked replacement warranty from google and you're first in line for OS updates. Screen is gorgeous (1080P IPS panel), and has the best white balance of any Nexus device I've seen.

Mine has been absolutely fantastic. Excellent battery life and extremely fast. It can easily get over 100Mbps over wireless as well.

You can buy local if you need to as well.

NCIX had mine at my door in three days. That was with the economy shipping.

N7 2013 has been rebooting randomly since 4.4.4. But it's still worth extra $50 compare to those tablets under $250 range.

But as you are going on a flight and may want something with MicroSD slot for media storage,

Samsung Tab 4 7":
http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/samsung-samsung-7-8gb-galaxy-tab-4-tablet-with-wi-fi-white-sm-t230nzwaxac/10292502.aspx?path=9aa30dbab63d67996a3227e302883911en02

This is old and I'm sure it will be cheaper soon as Tab S is already out.

Lenovo Venue 8:

Still on Jelly Bean but spec is similar to Tab 4 and cheaper.

Samsung Tab Pro:

It's has a good discount right now because Tab S directly replace this. It has Snapdragon 800 so spec is more recent. But it's $350.

Ended up with the Asus Memo Pad 8. It's on sale for $179.99 at bestbuy this weekend.

Seems decent so far, not as quick and smooth as the ipad mini, but it fits my hand better (1cm skinnier width wise).

All the 7" ones were just too small for my preference.

I coundnt find a 8 inch Android that I liked or that was any good to be honest. I ended up with a retina ipad mini... yes me.

Oh and its awesome.

This one was one I looked at, for under $200 it seemed ok. Very similar form factor to the ipad mini.

Or the Dell. This one seemed taller/skinier and I didnt like the form factor as much as the Asus.
