Finally got around to going through a bunch of photos from my trip to Iceland this past May. All were taken with a point and shoot (Nikon AW110), and I was actually pretty impressed with how they turned out. Anyway, nothing spectacular other than the views:

We did only the first 2 miles of Kalalau trail, then 2 more miles to Hanakapi'ai Falls.
Next time I go back to Kauai I'll try do the whole trail in 1 or 2 days, I just love Napali.

nice, love the last 3 shots. are you using your FX lenses on the V1?

grabbed an AIS 35-105 from Vintagevisual over the weekend, was undecided between the 28-85, 35-70 and 35-105s but I decided to go with the 35-105 because it's a push/pull zoom lens so makes focusing/zooming faster.
not bad $90 lens on the A7 but like other lenses of its time, it flares alot

Nah I was lazy and just used the 10mm 2.8 pancake lens. Definitely get spoiled using the D800 - it just has so much play in PP that daytime shots still can turn out quite good while the V1 things look a little more washed out.

Really like the first one. The third one the flare looks a little usual on his chest. Kalima?! [Temple of Doom]

If you enjoy the Erdinger Weiss, you might like the Weihenstephaner even more - I do. The rochefort 10 is just delicious with a lot of interesting flavors but it's strong as hell and pretty expensive considering it's 333mL so I don't drink it often, and it's kind of hard to find. They have the whole line there which is pretty impressive.

I never thought a manual focus lens, that is probably overpriced, would be my only lens to keep if I had to sell everything else. I'm sold on Zeiss. Need to save up some dollars for the 21mm which seems to also have a great 'look' to it...and a D810...D4S...300 2.8 VRII...Anyone want to buy a photo for a good cause?

I'm hoping to hold off until Christmas and decide if I really need it then, with hopefully the price dropping a tad. The improved Live View is hella tempting but to lose potentially $1,500 is a lot of money for a very mild update over the D800, which is a very capable camera.

When you guys get yours we'll have to do side-by-side comparisons :D

What's the verdict on the focus improvement with the 810? Significantly improved over the 800?

Everything in reading says that the focus is VERY good, my salesman reports that it is snappier and more accurate than the 800.

in terms of everything else, it's an S model, so more evolutionary than revolutionary. Maybe not enough to make you upgrade from a D800, but definitely more than enough to push you over the fence if you were sitting on it. I'm really tempted to get my ass outta bed to go pick mine up.

D800 focus was very good still, but the D810 is in another league, as it should be 2 years later. Very close to D4S AF, and group mode is amazing for things like BIF where it's difficult to keep one tiny focus point planted on the subject.

Lots of people also reporting none of their lenses or TC combos need AF fine tune anymore, just like D4S. Not sure what kind of magic they worked there.

Also lots of reports of much more confident focus locking in AF-C on static subjects, no lens chatter.

Shutter is quieter than a 5DM3 or D600 even without quiet mode.

Live view is much improved, neither noisy or interlaced anymore.

Amp glow is gone at all "reasonable" ISOs, even at ISO 6400 lens cap exposures.

It's a huge upgrade for many people, the AF update is very significant, as is ISO 64 base and half stop better DR. All the other "little" things like EFC shutter, better ergos, better video, better viewfinder with OLED overlay, faster FPS, gigantic buffer, etc. make a big difference collectively.

The differences are much more significant than any other "S", or "010" upgrade historically.

I'd personally still buy it even if the sole upgrades were D4S AF and ISO 64 base, so for me it is pretty much the perfect camera. Best landscape DSLR + plenty of fast shooting flexibility built in as well.

So far so good. Didn't have time to update ACR today, so no images to share as of yet.

The quiet shutter is kind of a mixed thing for me, I actually really liked the authoritative sound of the D3s, but at the same time, totally see why a little quieter could be good.

Only taken a few pictures of Canola fields so far, once I get them imported I'll be able to tell more.

oh yeah...it's more than possible to print from small files on most cameras though...I printed a facebook picture at 16x20 once because it was the only version of the picture that was available.

my only complaint with it so far is the memory usage factor. 32gb card is 397 images...that's going to be a lot of memory cards at Abbotsford.

Are you using lossless compression? You should be able to get about 750 14 bit lossless compressed RAW's on a 32GB card, and it truly is lossless, so there is really no need for uncompressed RAWs at 70+MB.

Either way, the huge buffer should be good for the airshows! 28 images in 14bit lossless compression, even more in 1.2 crop and DX.

Nothing that Canon did would make me change over now...I've been gear committed for a LONG time...even if they came out with a fully weather sealed 24mp pro crop body with 8fps and a limitless buffer I'd still have to pass on it as it would just cost too much to switch over.

If all it takes to make you want to switch is a little step forward you're going to be making a lot of switches...nature of the beast. Canon is lagging behind at the moment (in my opinion), but they won't be forever. There will be new bodies with new features that make us all hard (with some obvious exceptions), and they will continue impressing us every time someone rethinks a certain feature. As a Nikon fanboy to the core, I look forward to the day Canon pushes back with all their might, because it will push Nikon to be even better.

If you have mostly high-end lenses, your cost and effort to switch will be very small, and likely offset by the fact that Nikon lens equivalents are almost all cheaper.

While I agree that people shouldn't be switching back and forth with every little change, some people don't want to wait 7+ years. Canon's been doing a good job getting their lenses updated though, I commend them for that. There are rumors of an all new sensor coming this August/September, however that rumor has been floating around for the last 3-4 years. Personally, I really hope they come out with something that shocks the market, to keep the competition on their toes.

I would switch systems if something truly game changing was released by either side, it would take something pretty special though, since Nikon has been ahead for the last 7+ years (before that Canon enjoyed many years of clear FF superiority).

If you are considering a switch, I would encourage you to wait until Aug/Sept. just in case. If they STILL haven't come out with a competitive sensor in a compact body with DXXX build quality by this fall, that would probably be the last straw for me if I was in the Canon camp.

Anyone want to buy a mint D600 with only 2200 clicks for a good price? :D I am a weak man, and the more I read how happy people are with it, I don't think I can put off a D810 purchase much longer

the Jobo is a lifesaver for developing lots of roll but it is impossible to load film when the reels are wet, either you do the next batch in a few hours or the next day.
but at least now I can develop 5 35mm or 6 120 in one batch and I finally managed to load 2 120 in one reel today

big thanks to Derrick for lending me some of his stuff to try out, the 2509n 4x5 holder fits on the bottom part of my 2840 drum which is basically a 2520 drum.
the jobo 1500 drums are too small for the unirollers, 2500 will work fine though.

if you're in a budget, you could buy a Uniroller (~$120); a 2520 tank with 2 2502 reels and 2509n holder (~$300) and you're set for developing 35mm, 120 and 4x5

you need to construct something like this though for the 2520 to work on a uniroller

From our hike on saturday to Bow Peak. Beautiful approach but the final ascent was a lot more difficult than I expected it to be but the view was worth, albeit my knees hate me still. Additionally, made a couple other stops in the area.

Earl, which tripod did you buy lol? I thought you already had a light-weight one! I'll try to think of some hikes, and I'm sure Trevor has some good ideas for you too. Problem with the Rockies is that the hikes aren't really long but tend to have lots of elevation gain unless you stay in the valleys, so that'll be up to you. Of course you could take the gondola at Sulphur Mountain in Banff

This was Bow Peak, and it's not a hike I would recommend for anyone who doesn't have a decent/lot of hiking experience for a couple reasons. One, the trailhead and path for the first bit is pretty much non existant and could be easy to get lost without a topo, and two, the ascent and imo worse descent through the boulder field is a slog and a half. The two hikes you mentioned I'm unfortunately unfamiliar with.

Nice, I think that's the same as I have minus that particular ballhead. It's a great setup and very light. Even had it on a super windy ridge and it did decently, albeit spiked feet would be wonderful. I think I'm going to bring a plastic bag with me nowand hang it filled with rocks. I was a little worried a couple big gusts were going to take it off the cliff in Waterton so I held onto the camera strap lol.

Earl, I have a bag from F-Stop called the Tilopa. I love the engineering that goes into and it's built very well, but for really heavy loads on some of the long hauls I've done, I prefer other bags if I can. I just wish they offered different sized bags like most backpack companies but that's not really the primary concern for most camera bag makers. You can come check it out if you want.
