View Full Version : Able person parking in handicap spot

I was just at Beacon Hill sportchek and this douchebag flies into the first handicap spot, pulls out a handicap pass and hooks it on the rearview mirror. He hops out and runs into atmosphere.

Should he be publically shamed?

Fuckin rights. I love when people do that- yelling at them and calling them on their bullshit is one of my pastimes :P

I imagine there are a whole lot of disabilities that people can get the handicap things for.

How about the pregnant ladies who can barely walk?

Where are those on your list?

Let's just very fucking back the fuck up and call it even.

You're an asshole. Especially considering you should understand chronic pain. You need to try out MS.

Obviously it's situational. Don't turn into a dumbass about it, Seth.

lol right. If someone RUNS into the store and has no disability to speak of and are abusing the system you're damn right I'll call them on their shit.

I know a few people that abuse their spouses handicap parking pass. So, should they get a free ride because they have the pass? Fuck that.

Absolutely I understand chronic pain, and yet I still don't park in the handicap spots because I am able to walk from a greater distance. Should I park on this spots and call it okay because my back hurts?

You're an asshole for not calling people on their shit, putting people who need those spaces at a disadvantage. To me this is no different than the people that whip out the phones and record people getting assaulted.

Grow a fucking spine and stand up for what's right.

Impossible to assess someone's physical condition by their outward appearance. Some don't want to be branded with a handicap sign on their mirror all the time - it likely embarrasses some people.

Perhaps they have a physical condition that limits their ability to walk long distances. Or they have chronic pain and need additional room to enter and exit their vehicle. It's immature to judge someone based on their appearance from car to store.

Well, I suppose you are correct. But from his outward appearance (semi-built, tight ass shirt, hair slicked back, Ray Bans) and the way he flew into the handicap spot like his middle name is "douchebag" there was no indication the was limited.

I could be wrong though. But everything he did points to asshat.

FYI, I did get a picture.

I totally agree with that scenario. I understand that people with a need should be able to use the handicap park, and that includes mental illness. However, I don't think it's wrong to challenge people who meet the scenario you described. When I worked at Safeway (when I was like... 16 lol) I used to see people do that all of the time. It's not really as rare as you think it is, and for people that need those spots it's a pretty significant inconvenience. But you didn't need me to tell you that.

Its actually Illegal to drive around with it in the window... It says it right on the back of the placard that it should only be displayed while parked.

In AB, it's illegal to drive around with anything hanging off of your rear view mirror (or blocking your dashboard view). Everyone, myself included, tool around with parking passes anyway though.

You're an idiot, just because you drive like a dick and dress like a "douche" doesn't mean you can't be handicapped. Maybe instead of being a pussy and hopping on the internet looking to publicly shame someone next time you should say something to the person face to face. That likely won't happen though because you're obviously a passive aggressive little child.

Here's your winner:

1. Bentley
2. Walmart (Westbrook)
3. Split between handicap and "Expectant Mothers Spot"
4. Takes up two spots when the one on the right would have easily accommodated the vehicle (despite being for expectant mothers)
5. Many other spots available including at least three visible in the next aisle over
6. I approached the window to make sure. No handi tag.

Some brown dude playing on his phone apparently waiting for his Bentley riding, Walmart shopping, inevitably pregnant and handicapped wife.

I'm not handicapped but my gramma, and some close family friends have their placards. I drive them to their appointments/run errands with them and use the card to park in the spot while we go in the store/mall or doctors office. Sure get some looks with how my car looks, some people are mouthy but usually STFU when they get put in their place. Or I get the lovely handwritten note telling me I shouldn't be in that spot because my car looks nice.

Some people really just need to mind their own business. They think they are being righteous, or doing a favor for the world. But they weren't there to witness the parking and the reason why said person is parked there (with placard) or what disability the person has. People who actually abuse the system will get caught eventually. Nobody needs white knights running around trying to do good.

Wow, Ive just finished doing this plenty of times, I was escorting my mom around with her broken foot, to which I was given a temp. disabled placard.
Often Id whip around in her SUV, leave it off since it gets in the way of my vision, then put it back on when I had to pull in somewhere to pick her up.

Does this unequivocally make me a fucking asshole deserving public shaming too?

But in the original situation you wouldn't know if he was escorting his disabled relative until after he came back out of the store...

I think people have a lot of situations in life that you don't know about at the time, and being a dick to someone at the wrong time just heaps it on.

I used to think the way you do, but then i got hurt myself, and that taught me to be more open minded to other people, you have absolutely no idea what type of person they are because of what they wear or drive. Now I notice disabilities more, and i know first hand how hard people try to hide their weaknesses.

I'll give my own personal example - mother-in-law walks with a walker. There have been occasions where I have taken her somewhere in our SUV, parked in a handicapped spot using her placard, got out, got her walker out and helped her into a neighboring business (hair dresser for example). I then left to do other errands and came back later and parked in the same handicapped spot with her placard to pick her up.

So at the point where I'm initially parking, I look like a douche until the walker comes out and at the point where I'm picking her up, I once again look like a douche until I'm seen returning to my vehicle with her and her walker.

Everything is not always as it seems.

Listen, I get the message you're trying to send and respect that. However, let's back this up:

Since I was there (well, the OP was, but let's move to first person), and I watched the person drive into the spot, and then run into atmosphere, there are a few assumptions that can be made.

Now, to be fair, there are also a few assumptions that can't be made. But, given that we just watched the dude run into the store, it's safe to say there isn't a disability that restricts mobility.

It's like you guys refuse to accept that people take advantage of those spots. When I worked at Safeway I watched it happen all the time.

So I make an obviously exaggerated post about how it's my favourite past-time to call these people on their shit and you chime in, with the first thing being that I'm an asshole. Ignoring the fact that your sarcasm detector is malfunctioning, it's now a little parade of all the "but what about this scenario..." bullshit posts. It is just bullshit, because aside from the fact that it's a blatant overreaction to an obviously sarcastic post, it's now just a bunch of PC dick-swinging so people can feel better about their action of inaction.

Listen bud, I live with pain every day. I know exactly what it's like, and yet I still don't have a handicap pass because I am able to safely navigate my way through a parking lot and don't require the advantage. Some people do. Nobody's arguing that.

But if I watch some dude sprint into the store after parking in that spot, bet your ass I'm going to call him on his shit. If he comes back with "I'm picking up my grandma" (or some other reason to justify it), then fair enough. But a lot of the times they don't. A lot of the times the answer you get is "well nobody else was using it" (or some other contrived bullshit). Same goes to Bentley dude taking up TWO spots- I'd have had a field day with that guy.

You know, it's okay to check people sometimes. I mean, it's not like there are people out there looking to take advantage of various systems set in place for others.

My grandma was issued one but I RARELY used it. Why? Because exactly as stated above: I would drop her off in front and pick her back up while she waited. So why should I park in a handi stall if I AM ABLE BODIED AND I AM THE ONE RETRIEVING THE CAR AFTER? Those stalls should be left to real users, not you lazy douches doing drop offs. ;)

Though I must say.. IF you are able to walk in the store, in the mall, etc.. How are a few more steps in the parking lot going to affect you LOL. Definitely if you're in a wheel chair, need a bigger spot, etc.. sure but TBH, most of these people don't 'truly' need it.

I'm not agreeing nor disagreeing with that, but good for you for calling people out. I'm considering something similar for the people who park right beside me when I deliberately parked 10 stalls away from the crowd to avoid door dings.

Anyway, am I only the only one that thinks these reserved spots have gotten out of hand? I mean what's next?, a reserved spot titled "Recent Injury People Only"?

Back to the OP, my sentiment is basically what A790 said.

Flying into a parking spot is douchebag enough. Running into a sporting good store while parked in a handi spot just magnifies the douchebagginess exponentially.

Do I know 100% he doesn't need it? Maybe not. But I'm 99.99999999999999 to infinity % sure he could have parked 3 stalls away and would have been just fine.

Everyone defending the situation and making all these suggestions that he may have needed it can GTFO.

I agree and disagree.

For example, the gym I go to has signs out front for "Fuel Efficient Vehicles Only". My Cherokee gets about 30 mpg on the highway, that's pretty fuel efficient right?

The "expecting mothers" parking spots make sense as far as I'm concerned.

I don't see anything wrong with providing enhanced accessibility for those that may need it, but I sure as shit am not going to respect a "fuel efficient vehicles only" sign.

You know, it's okay to check people sometimes. I mean, it's not like there are people out there looking to take advantage of various systems set in place for others. First, I worked at Safeway too, and saw it as well. But I also saw a lot of situations where it appears that person appeared to be ok, but in reality they weren't. I remember specifically picking up my ancient grandmother at places like atmosphere, primarily because they had kickass footwear that was perfect for her. Like Merrels with no laces. I'd drop her off, she'd shop for an hour, and I'd run my other errands in the meanwhile, then whip back and pick her up.

Second, it's not YOUR job to call them on this shit. If you want it to be, then get a job with Bylaw. I know it sounds like anti-confrontational BS, but honestly, it's really not. Before I'd met you personally and found out what kind of guy you were, I'd probably have told you to go fuck yourself, and it would have ended badly (hopefully for both of us). Either way, unless you have some specific authority, nothing is going to ultimately come of it. The person doing something like is most likely of a nature to simply not give a shit, more than happy to jump in, and all you end up is standing in front of a judge explaining why you thought you could be the police.

Third, if you meant it jokingly, then you should have made it super clear you were kidding, perhaps by saying outright, (yeah, I'm just fucking with ya). You have a history of making sense, usually with well thought out comments, so I know I took what you said at strict face value. Having met you in person, I'm quite prepared to believe that you would immediately stand up for something you believed in.

Finally.. what constant pain? The perils of old age/damage creeping up on you? I have a little experience with that if you have any questions, or looking for any particular advice on how to deal with chronic pain.

I wrestle with this dilemma far too often. I have a disability and even saying that is tough but my Doc set me up with a placard. I rarely use the handicap spots except in winter as my walking is dangerous on poor surfaces/conditions. I fell deep guilt every time I do use a spot even though I'm allowed. Standing still I look like an average middle aged guy and unless you watch my gait over a distance I appear normal in all respects but believe me I am not. The hardest part of all of this is having to accept things like the placard which means I am not once as I was and all the things I could do I can no longer. Sorry for the rant but this one hit really close to home.
