View Full Version : Any sweet lease deals on right now? (economy car)

My GF needs to replace her car, which is a 1998 Altima on it's last legs. It's in OK shape and has fairly low KM for the age, but needs more work that it's worth, and I'm worried about it's safety & reliability. She also just wants a new (at least to her) car. Usage is basic short-distance commuting, and the car would live outside (no garage).

Budget is super low, $10,000 max, but a sweet lease deal would be even better. A while ago I saw you could lease a Nissan Versa with zero down for $150/mo, and something like that would be absolutely perfect. I saw a similar deal on Jettas for $170/mo or so, but I think it may have been the City Jetta a while back.

Looking at new, or almost new, econo boxes. She doesn't care about anything at all except good on gas and reliable. Something like a Versa, Accent, Yaris, Fiesta, Mazda 2, etc. Not opposed to a Civic/Corolla etc. however newer low KM ones are out of the budget for the most part. Hatchback would be nice, but not necessary.

You can buy a 2014 base Accent for $10,495 all in except GST right now, which is an option.

Basically looking for a super cheap 0-4 year old car, super low km if it's older, and in the economy class. Anyone see any super cheap lease deals on for under $200/mo lately?

Thanks!

Kia Rio looks decent on a lease. 0.9% on 36 months, 16,000km/year, 57.6% residual. On 20,000km/year, 56.4% residual.

edit - 48 months, residual is still fairly strong at 47%. Tack on all fees, before price negotiations (completely base car) and it's $193/month @ 16,000km and $196/month @ 20,000km.

I think the new Jetta has a 0% finance going on right now. I know you could lease a trendline Jetta for around $200/month.

Thanks guys - I will follow all of these up.

Let me know if you see any more. Cheap outright purchase deals work too, even unsold 2013 stock.

The Elantra was incredibly cheap as well. See if that sale is still ongoing but you could get a base elantra for about 12k

Trendline Golf 4 door automatic 1.8T
4 year lease
16k kms/year
1.9%
~265 GST in before discount. I know it's a bit more but it will be the nicest of the bunch inside and by far best engine too. 3 door might be even cheaper, build tool doesn't work for it.

Should be arriving any day now.

I would be concerned about the condition of the leased car once the lease contract is up and she needs to turn it in. A car sitting outside for years and if I'm reading right, the GF is not the most attentive to car care. She will be potentially on the hook for thousands in repairs at lease end, tires, windshield, bodywork, etc. I'd look for a decent used or new car within her budget, one with autostart and an extra set of winter tires (on rims) as a bonus.

Well I talked to her again yesterday, and apparently the new budget is $8000, she's not in a hurry, and no leasing haha :banghead:. The cheaper the better.

Soooo that's looking more and more like a 1-4 year old econobox. or something like a very low km 2006+ civic (or similar). She absolutely does not care about performance or looks, just reliable, cheap, and somewhat new.

Thanks for all the previous suggestions guys, however it looks like the criteria has changed.

Just browsing Autotrader (Capped search at $9000) there are cars like 2008-2009 Nissan Versa Hatchbacks, 2007-2008 Yaris, 100K+ KM Civics, newer base Fiesta, etc. If it's older, the KM need to be super low. 4cyl family sedans are fine too, but the only ones in budget have insane KM.

Honda Fit fits her budget and needs, look for a 2007/08 automatic. Cheap to add autostart and 14" winters. The Fit of that era was best of breed.

I leased a 2013 Fit and now my wife drives it f/t. Good economy, good cargo room, easy to park etc. Too small for me and sitting position is high.
For $8g you should be able to find a decent used vehicle. I saved my search and check periodically for good deals on Kijiji and Autotrader.ca

She found a 2007 Chevy Aveo for $4999 with 73k. How shitty are those? To me it seems like it's probably a POS, but she just loves it because of how cheap it is....lol. I am fighting a losing battle. Isn't a re branded Daewoo or something?

I would LOVE to get her into a Fit, it is the absolute perfect car for her, but any Fit in her budget has huge KM, unfortunately.

I found out it's a Daewoo, that is getting veto'd for sure haha. No way I would let her buy one of those.

I've seen some really nice 2007 Fits for under six grand lately. I don't think you can really go wrong with one of those.

If the budget plumped a little more upon re-consideration, the new Micra is supposed to be at $9998 and Mitsubishi and Hyundai are offering big cash on the hood to try and get into that ballpark. That said, those are definitely gonna be stripper models (especially the shitbarge Mirage) and you can buy a top-level Fit Sport for not much more than a base-model Fit on the used market.

Some good links here guys...thanks. I will show them to her. I especially like that low km Fit. Scion looks like a good value too, but I am not sure if she wants a 2 door (will ask).

This looked pretty good too until I saw who was selling it:

Does that year of Impreza have that horrendous 4spd transmission like the WRX had?

OP's girlfriend sounds like a keeper.

For $8000 it should be easy to find a reliable econobox. My daily commuter is a Dodge neon I bought for $1000 7 years ago. It's not fancy, and now it's leaking oil, but damn it is cheap to run.

Hard-pressed to find a better value than this. Throw on a $200 auto start and $650 in winter tire/rims... good to go. Some parts of my family buy these GMs, run them up to 250-300K and sell 'em for cheap. They put 200 KMs a day running into the city and back commuting. Other than brakes and tires, really no complaints.

I'll show that one to her, thanks. She'll love the price haha.

Car looks like the seats are covered in stains though? Hard to tell.

Stuff like that makes me more concerned about how it was cared for over the last 10 years. I know it won't be perfect, but I imagine the price category at hand has a whole lot of beat cars, which will be annoying when shopping I'm sure haha.

1) she drives stick?

2) make sure her key chain is light or the recall is done.

2014 Mitsubishi mirage.

Starting at $9,998.

Toyota or honda. Do not let her buy ANYYHING ELSE.

The nightmare of a shitty used car purchase will become your problem lol. Honest to god, for $8k, you can buy a 100,000-150,000km toyota or honda. They will just be broken in, even if abused. Make sure to get the timing belt changed, do regular oil changes intervals, and call it a damn day.

I am 100% serious though. Do not buy anything else, she (you) will regret it, and in that price range there is absolutely no reason you cant find a nice one that will go another 300,000kms while getting 40usmpg.

I'd stay away from the Mirage. Resale is going to be junk on them, the gas mileage isn't all that great for being so small and so little power.

Also 5 speed manual or a 4 speed automatic? Eff that

I'm in the same boat.... I'm ok with leasing opposed to dishing out 8 or 9 grand for a used vehicle. Problem is the old lady wants to be "sitting higher up" on the road versus a car so has anyone gotten a deal lately with low monthly payments a top priority? Rav4, Tucson, etc

Willing to look at all options really because she's not going to say no to new wheels

Ford Escape SE 2.0T 4wd has around $3500 in incentives and 0% lease for 48 months so payments would be $350-370 all in. That's the stronger motor too and would be slightly less with the 1.6T

I've been finding a decent amount of Fits and Civics (2006-2008) in the $6-8K range under 100,000km. Probably end up with one of those two when we come across one in outstanding condition.

Nissan sucks (Versa, Note, Micra)

interiors fit for a car of the early 2000's, bland ugly styling, bring nothing innovative or at least modern to the table. Engines sound like microwaves and revving them up is painful.

they depreciate more than Fit, Fiesta, Mazda2.

I'd personally go Fit but I'm already inclined towards Honda. Fiesta a close second since even the base model (with manual transmission of course, the autos are lemons) is a riot to drive.

If we are going the "cuv" route I'll likely seek out a previous generation rav4/Crv for cash

Seems the jetta is most competitively priced at the moment (leasing). Anyone have any experience with the current base model?

Resale being junk is relative. A non-rusty, no problem used car is about $3k used nowadays. Doesn't matter what it is.

The accent though is a SCREAMING DEAL. OP should buy that and be done.

A ~$11K all-in Accent brand new would be top of my list right now for her, but unfortunately it's not my money and she wants to spend $5-8K tops by the sounds of things.

Give her your Civic and buy yourself an Avant S4 :-). Eventually it all will be in the same family anyways.

For up to 8K my choice would be a used Civic, TSX, Matrix etc. Doesn't sound like a race car is needed so...
