this is what detonation can do to your pistons  . time for JE pistons and crower rods :bigpimp:

oh yeah, sorry for the quality of these pics. my scanner sucks.

lol. hehe. actually i wasn't the one that blew the piston. i got this engine from another friend to rebuild. the cylinder walls are good, just needs new pistons and rods

Nah, that isn't that bad :dunno: the pistons are still in one piece

i don't know the whole story behind this engine but the last owner lent his car to a friend and lets just say his car just didn't run the same when he got it back :guns: . causes  i don't know. could have been a couple of things.

Is that the old motor out of HOK's car? Damn it, I've met the guy a couple of times and damned if I can remember his real name now...Josh? I think?

HOK that drives the rally blue RS? that would be him  . his name would be josh. actually he was the one that took these pictures too. i bought the engine from him to rebuild so i wouldn't have as much down time with my car when i put the turbo and everything else in.

Cool. He seems to like the turbo 2.2 out of the legacy he's got under the hood now. Not a bad motor, interesting alternative to doing a EJ20T swap.

2000impreza

the ej22t(legacy turbo) engine does seem pretty reliable with a fair amount of boost. i don't know if its wise of me to build a ej25 because most tuners i've talked to tell me the cylinder walls are too thin, the block can't handle that much power, and such. so i figure either i would prove them worng and build up the ej25 or swap the ej22t in because they are probably right. i went with building the ej25 for some strange reason so i guess we'll see if i can get this thing tuned good enough to run fairly reliable  . if this doesn't work out i'll save up for a ej20 swap of somesort.

i think the most important thing i've learned so far is to not let *cough*jack ho that drives a legacy*cough* touch your car.

I don't know who all these "tuners" that have so little good to say about turboing a 2.5L motor are, but they really should sit down and take a hard look at what shiv pathak has managed to do with it. He managed to get a turbo 2.5L putting out 300hp reliable as sunshine, but you still here everybody and their dog saying that theres too much wrong with the design of the motor to make big power with them

And I'll refrain from saying anything about Jack, good bad or ugly

4wheeldrift your warren right? whats your opinion on the 2.5L, do you think it can handle a decent amount of boost? to be honest i get so much mixed opinion on this. i don't know if you can compare one of SCC's project cars to something that we would build because it seems they have unlimited funds. not something that we can do in our garage's.

i agree with you on the the issue about jack

Isn't detonation good for the motor? it just shows that you are running nice and LEAN!!!

I have a friend who had a 2.5L RS with a turbo installed. I remember it ran about 8psi. It had a piggyback AFC type fuel controller, but wasn't dialed in properly. The engine lasted about 2400km before it blew up. It was fun while it lasted =).

The turbo kit also interfered with the MAF sensor. It blew up about 4 times ($400 a pop!).

looks like a minam kit from hongcouver. Did he run the road course ever?

Right on both counts. It was William's car. He's in Hongcouver now.

i've heard of that car. was the owner's name jeff or something like that? i can't remember his name hehe. i think the shop in vancover that was known as minnam is now called teknikmotorwerks or something like that.

do you guys know what he used for engine management besides a afc? did he have upgraded injectors, ignition, fuel pump??? cause there is no way you can run 8psi for very long on stock fuel and ignition system. also is his car a 1999 RS? cause the 2000 and up use map sensors.

i wonder how much boost the ej25 can take with low compression forged pistons and rods

I remember seeing that car sitting at subaru of calgary for months on end with the motor blown.

2000Impreza: Yep, I'm warren. IMO, with a minnam type setup you should have little difficulty making around 10 psi and doing it reasonably safely, if the car is tuned well and has upgraded fueling capacity. Shiv I believe was running around 12-15psi to make 350hp off a minnam stage 2 kit (T3/T4 hybrid with a TEC-II engine management system) with an uprated fuel pump and bigger injectors. If you aren't going to go stand alone, you will probably only be able to get 7-8 psi out of it before you start having problems. IIRC correctly shiv found that about 8 psi was the maximum the stock injectors were really able to handle before they were beyond a safe duty cycle. Its quite doable to make the 2.5 handle boost safely, its just all dependent on what you do to keep the motor healthy. Make sure the car is fitted with a full gauge set to keep an eye on things under the hood, stay on top of maintenance and keep your tuning a bit on the conservative side and you should be able to enjoy your turboed 2.5 for a long time without any difficulty.

The engine didn't blow until it was shipped to Vancouver. Higher air pressure/density with same amount of fuel killed 'er there. When it was a Subaru of Calgary, it was for the MAF sensor, which blew on a weekly basis.

The malady of the MY99s. Thats why i don't have an intake on mine.

you can wire up a mustang cobra maf to the MY99's and tune it with a AFC of some sort. some guy on i-club did this. as long as you mount it right it shouldn't blow out. hok is still using his stock maf after who know how many miles.

Tarun from the AAWDC had figured out some sort of adapter for a MY98 MAF sensor to make it work with a 99. I just wasn't so sure I wanted my car to be the guinea pig when I have rather limited funds to play with :)

with a more durable maf i think the MY99's are much easier to add a turbo to than the MY00+ cars. i don't think i'm going to turbo the stock engine. probably going to wait until i have the funds for pistons and rods. so far i have turbo, IC, oil lines, engine block, and a few odds and ends. it takes so damn long to find some of the parts and fittings i need :banghead:
