View Full Version : Why do you buy your gas where you do?

Now that I have a car and I have to fill it up with the pricey stuff (premium), I may as well get on one of the rewards programs or whatever the stations have...

Post what gas station you go to regularly, and what kind of "bonuses" or rewards do you get out of it?

Esso, Just because it is close to my house, i can pay at the pump, I like that there is usally a royal bank mashine inside, And because my mom had a esso extra card, so i swip it everytime i fill up, I dunno what i get or what the points are for, but that is why i use esso. Any esso works, on most regerly used would be the Citadel Esso.

I buy my gas at esso, just cuz its where I've always gone.
this is kinda off topic but I heard that mohawk gas is bad for boosted vehicles cuz its made with ethanol or something. is that true.

Since when does Shell have 94. If it is the gold that you are talking about it is rated up to 91. It might not even be 91 as it is only rated "up to 91"

Is this in Calgary?

They used to have 92, now it is 91 unless not all of them changed. You might want check that out. I know that in BC they are 92 still but about a year ago the esso that I always went to lowered it to 91.

There are many brands of gas stations out there. But in reality, only 4 brand of gas is served:

Petro-Can
Esso
Shell
Husky/Mohawk

Gas is gas, I'll buy from the one with best deal.

Currently, it's Canadian Super Store. I believe Petro-Can supply them. $0.075 coupon for every liter. Since I buy food from there anyways, it's the best deal in town.

Also a known fact that gas price in Calgary is set @ Shawnessy Walmart. Prices always change there first and ripple thru the city in a week or two.

Mohawk 94 if I'm nearby, Shell Supreme if I dont have a choice. Before I bought my GTI I filled up at shell, its 20 sec from my home and our family has been going there for the better part of 2 decades. I do find my current vehicle runs better on mohawk94 but gets less fuel economy than Shell 91.

My turbo car seems to run better on Shell 91 than on Mohawk 94. :dunno: I don't know why, it just does. Shell gas seems to smell like race gas almost. Every other station like Petro, Esso, and some smaller stations make my car run like shit.

The ethonal-blend in Mohawk gasoline only helps in cars older then around 1990. It doesnt make for better power, or milage. All its made for is to help with emissions, 30% cleaner they say.

Safeway is the best deal for 91 - they have the standard 3.5 cents back deal (double if you have a coupon from buying groceries) but the cost between the grades is almost half as well.

Ie, at normal station: 73 reg, 77 med, 82 supreme, Safeway would be 73 reg, 75 med, 77 supreme. Then you get your 3.5 cents off on top of that.

My last fill was at Husky on Bow - 94 nice, but $$$$.

anyone a big fan of co-op?

I used to get gas because of the in store coupon, but it seems to suck ass for mileage. 375km on a tank of co-op reg vs. 450 for esso silver.

anyone else notice milage variations between brands?

I drive in pretty much the same conditions everyday, except for the weather.

Khyron
03-04-2004, 02:27 PM
As mentioned, it's pretty much all the same gas. The variation is mostly how busy the station is. A deserted station that has gas that's been sitting for a few months isn't as good as a busy one that is refilled often.

CO-OP Because I get 3.5 cents per liter off at the pump, 3.5 cents per liter back at the end of the year, plus I get CO-OP bucks or somethin for groceries and stuff. So its like 9 or 10 cents off per liter in total, it just takes a while to get some of it back. Plus good fresh gas too, CO-OP's always got someone fillin up.

bighead411
03-09-2004, 03:57 PM
Esso. b'coz it's better power and fuel economy for my both car. 91 Esso and Shell 91. Esso run approx 30-80Km per tank and feels much more power compare at Petro Can and Esso. so, i still go with Esso. plus, the car wash, i've almost 30K points which will make my car's paint peel off once i use all that.....haha

03-09-2004, 08:33 PM
Yeah CO-OP cuz you get 3.5 cents off at pump per liter and another 3.5 on groceries. I don't know how much they send per liter at the end of the year but we got a check for $115...99% of that from purchasing gas.

In the subaru, whatever's cheapest and closest. Usually Safeways. Although I use 89 octane, it gets much better mileage on the 89, saves me money to go up a grade.
In the 944, I always go to petro-can, and up until recently I was using 91 octane. Switched to 87 and my mileage got about 20% worse. Back to 91 octane for me.

Gas - King in midnapore :D closest place for diesel in my area (next closest diesel stop is like superstore on southland...)

I think murphy also has diesel but that gas station is ghey...too much traffic...too stupid of a company ("ohhh gas prices are going to be like 20 cents per litre come and ifll up all the time at us or whatever their bullshit was when they first started out") and pretty sure that gas king is a lil cheaper

The users of this board are not exactly representative of the general gas buying public, but the number one reason why Canadians buy gas where they do is location, followed distantly by price. Every other factor is essentially irrelevant to the general gas buying public.

I ended up signing up for petro points for the 3.5 cents off/litre and petro points... but looking at the number of points to get rewards, it looks like it'll take forever to get anything.

Usually just the Coop. Get the 3.5 cents per litre coupon for the store and then the rebate at the end of the year (I think that's another 2 or 3 cents per litre). With the vehicles in our house at the moment generic gas is good enough, no need for high octane stuff.

Esso near Victoria Park Stampede.

With Speedpass and after changing your options to not asking you anything (no receipt, no car wash, etc.), you can literally fuel and go with no hassles/waiting.

So convenient and the Speedpass is so small and dinky it can go on any key chain with ease.

haha tell me about it, I'm living in fernie now (1.29/L for reg) and I come back to calgary often enough to fill up in crowsnest pass most of the time. the first two gas stations on the Alberta side are pre pay only. kinda stupid, but Shell only because of their long term sponsorship of the Ferrari Formula One team. I also use Mobil 1 only for oil, because of their sponsorship of the McLaren team. CO-OP. 3.5 cents/L grocery coupon + the rebate at the end of the year (last year it worked out to about 5 cents/L on top of the 3.5 cents / L). I then pay with my rewards visa and get an extra 2% cash back on that.

Occasionally I pull up at the pump and someone has left $3+ grocery coupon there!
