Hey guys, posting this for a friend thats trying to get his DL.

He is an Ontario transplant, but doesn't have his Birth Certificate, or anything really stating his ID. For his DL, he needs his birth certificate or anything else that earnestly proves its him.... unfortunately he has really no documentation over here, asides from a cousin to prove its him per an "Affidavit". Any documentation back in Ontario is lacking as well to my knowledge, I doubt he even has his SIN card here.

Just wondering what the best route to take here is. As Im quite lost myself as to go about any of this, since all this is new to me.

Was he born in ON?

If so:

He would need a guarantor:
http://www.ontario.ca/government/what-guarantor

I guess they don't make SIN cards anymore but info on that is here:
http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/sin/lost/replace.shtml

And finally, the Alberta requirements for ID: http://www.servicealberta.ca/1305.cfm

Depending on his situation, he may have paperwork in the form of tax returns, utility statements, bank accounts, or something like that.

If he is low income he can contact CUPS at 403.221.8780 or [email protected] for help with the process.

He needs to get his Ontario birth certificate to start with. That's going to be key.
Did a quick read through the website, and looks like it's not too tough.
Check it out here: https://www.ontario.ca/Get%20a%20birth%20certificate

To answer the question, yes he was born in On. Thank you so much for the links, much appreciated. Both of you, I owe you many beers for your help. I forwarded the links to him, so he'll get on that ASAP. So, he says a big "thank you" as do I.

Jesus, if you owe me many beers for that, some of the dudes in the careers section must owe me a keg!

Anyway, he's in good shape, just gotta get his documents in order and start the process. Don't let him procrastinate too much, because getting a passport can be a big problem without the birth certificate.

He has to provide a bunch of stuff to switch his DL to AB.

- Proof he is Canadian (Birth Cert or Passport - or relevant immigration docs)
- ON DL - if he doesn't have it, he's got a bunch of other hoops to jump thru
- Proof that he resides in alberta - something mailed to his home, dated within the last 90 days with his name and address on it.

Seeing as hes an ON transplant, if his parents are out there, the quickest way is for one of them to go in and order it from ON vital stats on a rush and then mail it out to him here.

Also, your friend has 90 days from the day he moves to alberta to get it done. So, if he is in that time frame - theres's no huge rush.

If you have any other questions about that stuff, feel free to PM me. Each situation is a tad different depending on docs that he produces.
