I have the attached walkout basement plan which we are having the builders build and it calls for an open rec area but I would like to spice it up and have a home theatre and bar area. I'm looking for ideas on how I should set this up though.

So far on the right side I am thinking of getting rid of the window, having a fireplace and TV and the other side a bar with island...any other layout thoughts to better use the space?

Thanks

I think knowing a lot more things here would help

i.e.
does any part of your ceiling drop because of ductwork?
where are all the windows/where is the walkout? what directions (for natural lighting)?
can you provide an entire basement view so it we know where the entrance to the space is?
Wet bar or dry bar?

IMO don't get rid of the window. The more light you get in to the BSMT is better because it doesn't feel like a BSMT.
If you want to put a dedicated media room use the space on the left side (From the pic it looks like you are having a extended nook). Wait if it is a walkout that could be where your doors or the bigger windows are going to go.
For sure knowing the entire BSMT lay out will help.

I think the best development for a basement is to make it a GYM! It's cold down there regardless walkout or regular so its the best place to do exercise at for a home; and remember how much money u will be saving from getting a gym membership elsewhere. Do not use basement as a home theater or bedrooms (i know most ppl do) since furnace is loud in winter and cold air accumulates on the floor...

First thing I'd do is to put in stairs so you can actually go down there.

Not many thoughts for you, but I 2nd the idea of maintaining the window.

I should mention it is a walk-out basement and thus the original reason for removing the window on the side. However I may keep it. Just looking for some bar designs or other ways to use the space.

Keep any and all windows, never have enough in a basement and adding them later is crazy expensive. Radiant heated floors are a must-have in my opinion. I'd skip the traditional bar, too 1978 for me. I know zero people who actually use as intended, and they eat up a ton of space.

For ideas look on the Houzz website, there is a free app as well. A good place to start.

I beg to differ on that. I just did my basement and we did put a bar in it. Not only is the bar used almost everyday, but having a 40inch TV there makes it easier to watch TV and play video games on it. Plus, i don't have to use my projector to play games all the time

Here are some pics of my basement if you need any ideas.

Thanks man. The basement cost us $18,000 and that's not including the sauna, bar fridge and the mosaic tiles. I'd say $22-$23,00 tops. The company that did our basement wasn't that great. Never showed up on time and left early. His work is good, but his finishes are horrible. He never showed up to retouch the paint on some area of the walls. Sorry the basement is just over 700 sft
