try to find a resort that is 4 stars or more, close to downtown with a *real* all inclusive package (food/alcohol inc)
I stayed in a 4 1/2 Star resort in Purto Vallarta that was a 5 min walk to downtown it was very clean, patrolled by security, had all the liquor you could drink(10am-4am), and all the food you could eat(9am-5am)
A cab to anywhere in the city should be no more than $5.00cad
allways exchange your money in a cambio..never at the hotel
you will get way better rates if you do
Night clubs are crazy, for about 20-30usd you get a wristband that gives you open bar all night...and the clubs are massive, and usally have foam parties.
My total cost was $1800cad for the trip (airfare/resort)
plus $500 spending money which was enough to spend if your not going all out and buying everything
expect cancun to be 30-50 percent more expensive because of tourist popularity..
hope this helps a bit....just remember it's a long way to go to get drunk and party

I've been to one south of Cancun twice. It was very very nice.
One of the Riu Resorts. www.riu.com

I've been to the Bahia Principe Tulum which is about an hour south of Cancun (Mayian Riviera) It was very nice, very quiet, if I go again, I would stay in cancun. Its a really good vacation, and most are all-inclusive.

Means , you get your meals included in the price of the hotel , and some times it means you get free activities and what not. Pool tennis yada yada

Might want to research a specific resort - I read some that say if you want reservations in the a la carte restaurants you have to reserve at 6am!
