View Full Version : Good headphones for wearing for extended periods?

FixedGear

All my earbuds make my ears sore after extended periods, and both of my over-the-ears make ears hot after extended periods. anyone recommend something relatively cheap that doesn't suffer these problems? thanks!

Where are the headphones for? Is sound leakage going to be a concern?

I would go with a Semi-Open Velour Padded Headphone like the Sennheiser HD 558 (I could wear these for ages)

These are headphones for the office. I usually play classical music very quietly in the background from my computer speakers, which isn't normally a problem but I'm sharing my work space for a while and don't want to annoy the other guy too much. :D

EDIT: since I don't listen very loud, leakage shouldn't be a problem (?)

EDIT 2: and when I say "relatively cheap", I apparently mean really cheap haha. Is there anything around $30-40 that would meet my needs?

They are about $30 and will meet your needs well.

And two more for consideration:

The reason why your ears sweat is because the pad material is plastic and not leather; so you can't expect to have something for nothing. Hell I can't even say for sure what 'cheaper' headphones are on the market that actually have real leather.

For starters then, I would suggest something that rests on the ear, such as the Bose OE series. Not sure if the US Costco's have them but up here we do. They sound decent, are quite comfortable, and because they rest on the ear, don't get as hot. But you're looking at $100. You can't expect to find something that will be both comfortable AND sound good for anything less, and especially if you're listening to classical.

Or try these:

http://www.amazon.com/California-Headphone-Co-CHC-SILVERADO-Headphones/dp/B009F4BV8C/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1409088218&sr=8-2

Can't speak of the sound quality but I believe the cushions ARE leather. Clearing them out, not sure why. Looks like it was Kickstarter project:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/californiaheadphones/california-headphones-premium-metal-and-leather-de

Probably not worth the regular price:

http://www.californiaheadphones.com/silverado.html

[edit]

Actually, if you can get over the looks, the Koss Portapro's are an absolute classic.

http://www.amazon.com/Koss-PortaPro-Headphones-with-Case/dp/B00001P4ZH/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1409088753&sr=1-1&keywords=koss+portapro

They are comfy and sound awesome and as long as you don't pump up the volume, leakage is minimal. I've had these in the office for a bit before I gave them to my bro-in-law (and he actually loved the look).

I would go with black Razor Krakens, minus the mic.

I did a review here if you want to check it out.

Haha ok guys I don't mind that you're throwing out recommendations for stuff but keep in mind his complaint is NOT about sound quality, it's comfort relating to heat build up, and I think neither of those cans will address that issue.

And FixedGear is in the US.

I would try Comply Foam Comfort tips for your in ears. They're $20, and they will stay easy on the ears all day.

I wear Beyerdynamic DT990's and DT770s all day long and they sound good too! Only problem is they don't play nice with my hear if I wear it all day long.

Just wanted to let everyone know that my California Headphones Sonomas arrived today, definitely the best headphones i've ever owned (although big and not something to wear outside the house/office IMO). For sure a STEAL at $50 on Amazon (I've got shittier ones that cost more than twice that cost). real leather and metal - i'd suggest anyone looking for headphones to snatch a pair before they're gone.

Thanks clem24 for the recommendation, i would've never known otherwise!

Closed ear with leather pads would get hot though wouldn't it? I found it it is warm out, my Logitechs get pretty warm but my AKG open with velour pads are nice and cool

Logitech's aren't leather.

Fuck I wish I saw those earlier. I could have ordered a couple and sent them to my sister who is down in the states this week. I need something comfortable for the plane trip to HK in a couple months.

I've own a ton of headphones...

unfortunately you don't have too many options when it comes down to wanting a sealed circumaural/supraural set of cans that are comphy and yet isolating.

Open eared cans are not only more comfortable because of the airflow, but more common to be found with velour pads from companies like AKG and Sennheiser, whereas the sealed units are mostly pleather for isolation.

Open cans let sound leak and sound in, but typically have the best imaging in both width and depth

the only 2 companies I can think of that make "superior" closed back cans with velour pads that are worth their salt are:

Beyerdynamic (many options)
http://north-america.beyerdynamic.com/shop/hah/headphones-and-headsets/at-home/music-pleasure.html?gclid=CP30lt7yxMACFa5AMgodDBAAlw

and Audio technica

I'd agree, except that I still think that NC is gimmicy.

My Martin Logan headphones isolate as good as my audio technica's without requirng microphones and AAA batteries

Haven't heard the ML's yet but until you've tried active NR, I wouldn't say it's gimmicky at all; it does work and the Bose are especially good at it. Keep in mind the tighter the seal, the hotter they got and the more uncomfortable headphones become. Another side benefit to active NR is built in amps.

Also for your recommendation of Beyers, they are stupidly uncomfortable (at least for me) and your velour pads can still make you sweat.

I think fitment is relative as I really liked my 770s back in tha day

as far as NC? I dunno, I have had both the ATH7NC and the 9NC, which are very comparable to BOSE (if not better in SQ now with the 9) but still far from being a high-quality set of can, an only marginally improve isolation to good passive cans or ETYs and custom IEMs

Yeah you're probably right on that one. Most people love the HD800 but I can only keep them on my head for maybe 30 mins max. I think my head is just really sensitive LOL.

Hey, necro bump, looking for a set of noise isolating (but not cancelling) headphones for extended use in an office environment. Trick is they need to be a little bit lightweight, because they are for a little woman, who finds most "large" headphones too heavy for her.

Kind of similar to the OP, sound quality isn't top of the list. Wearing comfort and light weight is.

I picked up a set of Bose Truesound II a few months ago, I like them, they are an over the ear style, I have not found them to be uncomfortable after hours of gaming with them.

I've used these for almost 8 years now, on my third pair.

Now, I don't know what "light" means, but they are ridiculously comfy, forget they are in my ears. Block most noise, but not all. Did I mention comfy? They also aren't like "ear buds" where they go directly into your ear, f*&king hate that. These kind of just "rest" in your ear.

Looks like they are discontinued, but Bose has others that look similiar:

They have replaceable velour pads (or something that isn't leather). They aren't as nice as the H800S pads, not too surprising.

They sound great, very happy for $100. Definitely better than my Beyerdynamic Custom One Pros (which I use as a gaming headset for Skype haha).

Comfy to wear, at least for me. They also say "special edition."

Same as you, but they probably block more noise for me because I typically listen quite loud. I didn't buy them for their noise canceling properties anyways, they just happened to be a closed design that was on sale haha. I don't think they are designed specifically to be noise cancelling and have no active noise canceling circuitry. They are better than my other Beyerdynamic over-ear headphones by a pretty noticeable margin for music so I am happy. I think for $100 they are a steal, for $300 MSRP there are probably lots of similarly good options. I like that it came with two different cords as well so I don't have to order one from amazon right away.

Only thing I've noticed is with really deep, droning bass and high volumes, the ear housings can at times slightly resonate but it's super minor and I only got it to do that once after a ton of listening. It controls this much better than my other headphones. My computer speakers blow them away but I can't always use them at the volume I want so for $100 and for what I need them for I am extremely happy with these headphones.

The sound quality for music sucks though and doesn't block out noise at all being completely open. It's not a serious headphone for an audiophile, but it does the job if you just want background music, and does the job real well for phone conversations.
