Mercedes-Benz unveiled the replacement to the outgoing SLS, the AMG GT this morning, ahead of it’s public debut at the Paris motor show next month. Targetting the Porsche 911, the new AMG GT sits in a new segment in the Mercedes-Benz lineup.

FAAAACCCKKK.

Does that mean the SLS is now a collector's item? Whoever got them is now going to rack up dividends. :bigpimp:

Nice #s.

Car looks like a Z4M crossed with SLK55.

Hopefully they announce a BS.

hnnng, i still like the sls amg more but that is nice. any word on pricing, i am assuming by 911 they mean performs like a c2s but priced like a turbo?

So where does this sit performance wise with the sls?

It is gorgeous imo. The SLS was incredible though.

It's downmarket from the SLS. The SLS is discontinued after this model year.

No prices set yet, but it's expected to start at around $100k for the AMG GT, and $120k for the AMG GT S. Let's see how close I am on this one. :)

AMG GT S arrives in the spring next year, while AMG GT arrives in the fall. Both should be MY2016.

A Black Series model has already been spotted testing, and AMG brass has unofficially verified it in the PL.

Interesting, not sure if i like that it is a visual relation of the SLS without the performance.

The real question will be why would anyone buy an SL...

100k seems like a bargain for the segment the general population will put this into.

Calgary's new new civic?

Looks great from front, but the taillights look "off". This thing will probably look way better in person.

100k price tag is pretty attractive for a vehicle like that.

I'd still take an F-Type Coupe though.

The SL is a heavy and comfortable GT that turns into a convertible, while this is a sports car that will ride like a sports car. Completely different markets.

My estimates are on base, with options you'll see the AMG GT S near the $200k mark, which was the starting price of the SLS.

True but i think the chances of this thing keeping its top on are slim to none which edges ever closer.

Regardless i have never seen a more compelling 2 seater.

I hated the 991 rear end when it came out. Still do. This looks like it. Doesn't feel Mercedesy either.

I see styling cues from a lot of different cars but overall I think it looks pretty darn good and 34XXlbs for a sports/GT car is pretty impressive too.

If the S does top out near 200K as Rage is estimating then that sounds exactly like what it's going to be lol.

The base Carrera starts at $96K, with the Carrera S at $113K. 911 Turbo starts at $172K.

I would say the AMG GT sits between the Carrera and Carrera S, while the AMG GT S sits between the Carrera S and the 911 Turbo. The upcoming BS version will be the car to target the 911 Turbo.

Don't forget you can option the 911 Turbo to $260k.

I'm with the majority, the back end just looks off in pictures. I bet it will be better in person, but this could steal some sales away from Porsche depending on pricing. Need the 911 Turbo in Calgary, but can't afford a Turbo? BAM, AMG GT S.

I wonder how the performance will stack up against the various 911's (C2, C2S and Turbo).

I'll be surprised if the AMG GT S can touch the 911 Turbo's performance. That will be reserved for the Black Series edition IMO.

I'm guessing the BS will still be cheaper than a top end Porsche - if there is anyone who can out-option MB it's Porsche haha.

MB isn't even in the same options league. Porsche is rediculous.

It's as if their designers couldn't make up their minds over anything. I'm surprised you can mix and match quarter panels in the Configurator

MB is working hard to catch up, as the latest cars have a huge list of options. But you're right, not even close to Porsche with it's very detailed options lists.

It is just build to order, isn't lots of options nice so you can customize your car how you want especially when you are paying $100k to begin with?

You can also buy them without options and they come pretty well equipped!

It's also the main contributor to Porsche being the most profitable manufacturer on the planet. All other manufacturers are (starting to) following the 'mega-options' formula...

Porsche has a loyal and fanatic fanbase to support that business model. MB doesn't yet. They can only go so far before pissing people off.

The dichotomy is funny in the car world.

Most manufacturers have packages. You get all or nothing.

Porsche, you can take some.

Mercedes is still heavy on the packaging.

I would like to see this side by side a CLS SB. I am having a hard time visualizing the size of this car. Is it similar to the SLS?

rage2

It's slightly smaller than the SLS. Same width and height, just a little shorter (edit - 3.6 inches shorter). It's based on a shortened SLS chassis.

Quoted from MB forums

Prices start at $125K for the GT and about $15k more for the GT-S, those are base prices, I hear a fully loaded GT-S will be over $150K I don't think they are going to offer a roadster in the GT, at least that is what I heard from a very reliable source.

Is it just me or is this car completely overpriced? Haven't heard of any dropping yet though so is this a limited number premium type deal? Esp with as many km on it as it has.

How much do you expect it to be?

It competes with the 911. It's a bargain in comparison.

killramos

I'll admit i had it in my head the starting msrp for the s was 130. But considering the options for that car and the fact that its used its being sold at over MSRP. Hence the overpriced.

I don't mean its not worth the money. It just doesn't from the description, visuals ( ie looking for options missing from the ad ) and km justify being priced at 165 which is about what a completely loaded new from factory one goes for before any discounts.

I guess the question is... are any available? I'm guessing no, hence the high price. (Also US pricing new is $115-150k, so convert to Canadian $$$)

I saw it initially and thought, oh cool, an SLS.

Then I looked a little closer.. Nope, that is not an SLS.

Man are you sure? They're to compete with the NA 911's maybe. A 991 turbo will destroy this AMG in every possible way - except price. They would be similar at least compared to the used model shown.

It's meant to compete with the carrera, not the turbo. haha, you're right, the turbo would walk all over this car - as it should, given the price differential.

rage2
06-16-2015, 07:46 AM
The GT and GT-S competes with the non Turbo 911's. They work out to similar prices once optioned out, and are pretty close performance wise except for straight line, where the AMG GT is a bit faster.

There will be more AMG GT versions coming down the line to compete with the turbo, GT3, etc. Question remains if AMG can come close to the 911's at all in that segment.

^ One thing i noticed from the website, is the standard AMG GT not coming to Canada? only the S?

rage2
06-16-2015, 07:55 AM
First year only the GTS's are available. The $110k base GT won't be here till MY2016. Production is maxxed out right now, and all they're making are the higher margin GTS models.

It's too bad the US exchange shifted so hard in the last 12 months. At $130k the GT-S is a smoking deal, but we got the US price bump up to $150k without getting much more than the US base car.

killramos
06-16-2015, 08:27 AM
I completely agree, 130 was a great price. Which is probably why i puked in my mouth a bit at seeing a used one with no options for 165. Hadn't been keeping up on how the exchange was affecting things...

For that money I would buy the new McLaren instead without thinking twice :dunno:

rage2
