View Full Version : Your personal "best" un hyped rapper of all time

I'm not talking little wayne, jeezy or that nonsense.
My pick would have to be "WC" aka William Loshawn Calhoun, Jr. aka "Ghetto Heisman" aka "tha jankyest one"
Best known for his supporting role in seminal West Coast rap group "Westside Connection" known for hits such as "Bow Down" "Gangstas Make The World Go Round."
I always thought WC was the best MC in the group. Better than Ice Cube and Mack 10. With his clever lyricism and unique funky style/unabashed love for all things ghetto. What I admire most about him is his dedication to the early West Coast sound.
He doesn't so much praise the gang life as much as tell the harsh realities of what he knows.
A song that shows his range: "better days"
His song "The Streets" with Snoop dog is one of the best early 2000's rap videos IMO.
Can't post youtube videos at work unfortunately.
A close second rapper for me would be East Bay G "Spice One"

You're missing it man. That should've catapulted him into the big leagues. But it didn't. How many people even know who he is besides the bald guy with a braided beard in Westside Connection?

I don't think so. All hype would be someone like Soulja Boy or Brick in yo face boy. No real word skills to back up a hype video.
By this post, I guess I should have said: no crap Canadian unsigned rap that is unsigned for good reason!
I was aiming more towards artists who achieved little success relative to their skills. Artists who aren't necessarily marketable to the mass audience but don't give a fuck and keep grinding.

Also Tech N9ne has received very little hype even though he's been prolific for decades now.
Good eye! I agree on tech as well. He must make a killing off his merchandise though, he makes everything!

What no love for Canadian rappers? Where's our josh Martinez, pipi skid, McEnroe, sixtoo, fans? No Organized Rhyme fans lol? What about Stinkin rich even though he is a super hyped sellout

From what's been posted, Del and Organized Rhyme are on regular rotation for me. As for Canadians, I just started listening to Maestro - Black Tie Affair pretty regularly again. Solid album.

I don't know if WC was better than early Ice Cube, but he was definitely on par or better than Cube circa-WSC (I stopped listening to him around War & Peace Vol. 1) and probably had most of the best verses on the Bow Down album. I remember The Shadiest One being a pretty entertaining album and was glad he stayed out of the Ice Cube/Cypress Hill beef.
WC's crip walk was my favorite part of the Up In Smoke tour video haha

Along the same lines, I always felt The D.O.C. never got the recognition he deserved, especially since he ghost wrote so many lyrics for guys that blew up around him. I mean his fellow rappers acknowledged him, but he never got famous the way Dre and Eazy did. Coincidentally, I was just listening to his Helter Skelter album again this week. Took me forever to find it again since I forgot where I put all my old CDs. Fuck, was he bitter in that album (and rightly so).

Big L was also another rapper who should have been big had he not gotten murdered. Now that guy had some clever lyrics.

Early Ice Cube was great..but he really lost a lot of credibility over the years I think. Yeah I just picked up The Shadiest One a few months ago..bumping it on the daily in the stang haha. He just has such good flow and variety. And your right, he took the high road with all that nonsense. It's too bad Westside Connection is no more.
Dub C with Coolio!! in tha madd circle was also great for the period.

I always wondered if the D.O.C. would have gotten big if not for the car crash he was in.
AZ is always regarded as underrated, but then became the overrated underrated rapper. I always thought Tragedy Khadafi aka Intelligent Hoodlum was really underrated. He has some classic albums, was a part of the juice crew but came out even more underrated then Masta Ace.
