Was just out there with my stock XJ, really good run for a newbie like me. I'm interested but not sure what the status my xj will be at. I'd do it again stock but the lift should be in and installed by then. Will keep an eye on this thread and I'm game for a newbie run with anyone else.

I made it to the lake and back on LTX all seasons and only broke an exhaust hanger :D My forester could do it if it weren't for the water levels.

I'm totally down for this; however, my tires aren't as treaded as I'd like them to be. Secondly, my jeep is slightly rusted and I'm hoping that it won't bend in half!!!

It's a 92 lifted YJ with 31.5" x 11", manual tranny and last time I checked, 4x4 worked! That's kind of why I wanted to take it out off roading a bit.

for you noobs in manual trans vehicles... DO NOT push in your clutch if you are in water.... turn off the truck, place in new gear, start truck. i know the newer jeeps bypass the clutch switch while in 4-low to make this possible, but best try it out before you need it.

....i might be in depending on what i pickup for winter this year. did some light offroading in the f150... and uh, just not what im use to, dont like it. too big

I realize water and dirt won't be good in there but if your truck is deep enough to submerge your bell housing nothing you do will save your clutch.

I would love to go on this trip but my truck just won't be ready :(

yeah it sucks in dirt and shit. i've seen it first hand completely destroy the clutch before (jeep was not moving at all)

if you dont push it in, you can go pretty damn deep with no issues. i've had water over the hood before without issues. got stuck a few times with the mud up to the doors and had to gear down, turn truck off and then back on and its golden

thick mud is less of an issue than water/muddy water though as that flows the debris better and it gets between the clutch plate and flywheel and makes a mess

LUDELVR

This whole "not pushing in your clutch" thing is new to me. I've never heard of this before…then again, I've never wheeled before or driven in water that deep.

Could someone explain this in a bit more detail and how to go about doing it? I'm reading that when you drop into some deep water, you simply shut your rig off, throw it in 4Low and start the car while not stepping on the clutch? Did I get this right? :dunno:

ercchry
09-24-2014, 12:14 AM
Yup, thats about it. I didn't know about it when i first started either and figured it was worth mentioning. But it is a real thing haha.

Basically if you get shit between the clutch plate and flywheel it accelerates the wear exponentially. If you dont touch the clutch pedal then nothing gets in. Any water or anything in the bellhousing will just spin off and life is good.

The water lubricates the clutch and you end up not being able to engage it again until it dries out (which takes 20 minutes or so). If you are in the water and you stomp the clutch... you have to get towed out, and then sit around until the clutch gets dry enough to drive again.

I have admittedly done it in deep water without thinking, but never had this issue; however we had a Jeep do exactly this a few years back when he tried to follow the Hummers through a deeper puddle. When he pushed in the clutch it totally soaked it and he had to pull him out and basically took lunch while it dried.

Personally I stay away from water deeper than about 4 feet these days

Still totally in awe by this for some reason. So just note to myself, "don't step on the clutch if I find myself in deep water"
I've never actually tried 4 low without the clutch...does this work or will it stall if I have to stop without stepping on the clutch?

Just don't stop. Why do you need to stop in the middle of the water, anyways? :)

Force of habit I guess, kind of like being in traffic I'd say. It's like covering the brake or stepping on the clutch so I don't hit the vehicle in front of me. Might be uncertain if there's a drop in the ground so possibly just to get a feel for the road...that I can't see!

Totally new to anything wheelin so I want to cover my bases on how NOT to stuff up!! :banghead:

Unless you know how deep that water is you are going through, you may sometimes have to stop.

Heck sometimes your vehicle will just die to to water in areas it shouldn't go.

Kloubek
09-24-2014, 11:33 AM
...or you end up slipping inside the puddle and having to back up, rock it out, etc.

I don't think we'll be doing anything so terribly tricky that it will require stopping in a puddle on this run. I was just there last weekend and there were some pretty big puddles, but nothing difficult to get through. And that was AFTER all the snow we got.

4 low is fun, as long as you are moving a little you shouldnt stall. if you do just turn the key... if you keep stalling, gear down and turn the key. the power of the starter motor in 4 low is pretty impressive too.

talking cranking it maybe 4 times if you are stuck (try in same gear, try in lower gear, try reverse, try forward again)... there is a point when everyone should just give up and get a tug out... but the nice thing about a manual too is if you drain the battery too far to use the starter, you can just bump start it

I don't think taking the Ridgeline is the best idea, low ground clearance, accessible tow points, low range transfer case?

They have good traction control systems which makes them not bad for mud. They are a little short on ground clearance, and don't articulate especially well. I wouldn't take one out to Waiporous though.

That's kind of what I figured might be the case. Should have stuck with the original idea of a Taco instead of the Ridge (although a Taco doesn't have a trunk in the bed :P).

Plan for the day to be consumed, this needs to be understood first by anyone going wheeling. Do not plan anything for the day cause you have no idea whats going to happen throughout the day.

The worst is when you have a tailgate meeting before the run and theres that one guy he says he needs to be home by like 3pm haha. If thats the case for anyone on that day then just stay home. Im not truing to be a dick, just stating what I know

Should make one item mandatory: Air Compressor

I remember one of the first beyond trail runs, I had to lend out my air compressor to 3 people. Ended up killing my air compressor on the next run, good thing it was a Costco $60 compressor :D

It also took the crappy compressor 10-15 minutes per tire.

Adrenaline101
10-20-2014, 09:59 AM
I will have my on board air compressor available to use if people don't have their own. Bring a tire guage if you can for airing down and up. I have deflators but 4 can only do so many vehicles so fast.

Does beyond do a lot of these? I've been looking at getting an xterra for next season...would be good to know if there's a group that goes out regularly since none of my buddies are willing to spend money on this (of course they'd probably tag along...buncha mooches lol)

CA18-S13

Kloubek, there shouldn't be any river crossing if we are indeed going to Margaret lake. If we go to he falls then yes, but its nothing to be worried about after the river crossing. In all honesty there isn't anything in waiparous that is a real threat if you use common sense and know both your vehicle limits and your skill level limits.

I have a decent compressor as well for anyone who needs to use one.

I'm sadly unavailable for this run, way too much stuff to get done on the garage before winter hits. :( Y'all have fun wheeling while I'm stuck digging holes and hanging gutters.

You didn't need anyone's permission to go wheeling. If you wanted to go on a CT4WD official trail run you needed to be a member and have taken the course.
