So... Selling my WRX tomorrow. Budget is $10k. Considering the following wagons:

1998 E55 AMG Touring - This caught my eye. I have no clue what maintenance or reliability is like with w210 chassis benz's. Please advise:

2001.5 Audi S4 Avant 6MT - I know the history of this car. It needs lots of work. Transmission rebuild, floor pans caved in, various cluster lights. But it's Stage 3 and ultra rare nogaro on nogaro:

2003 VW Passat W8 4Motion 6-speed - Wow. Unicorn. That is all.

I nearly bought that B5 S4.

If you don't mind wrenching on the car and dropping a ton of money into it, go for the S4! I ended up with a B5 S4 sedan for winter and I absolutely love driving it! Spending $5k to have it road worthy though wasn't exactly pleasant though.

The volvo's are great. My girlfriend used to own one and racked up 320,000km on it. The differentially supposebly went around 270,000km and the car was basically RWD though. They decided to scrap the car when they sold it.

Don't have anything to add about the benz or the passat though, other than that passat looks like a wicked deal.

E55 wagon, transmission and engine are bulletproof. It's not as much of a monster as the supercharged versions later on, but it's much less maintenance.

I would go for the volvo for the fun factor. Don't know about reliability on those models though as I only had an S40 previously. AWD would also be nice.

Passat all the way man, no brainer for me. Lowest KM, rare, and fast!

Go for the passat, I'd be all over that if I were you, as in wiring him a deposit until you see it in person, although it seems quite top notch, and would doubt anything is wrong with it though

Yeah, it's *only* 354HP, but a german hotrod wagon does sound appealing. Only thing throwing me off is RWD + ski trips = wishing I had AWD.

I'd go for the Passat for the 4Motion and the rarity factor. If AWD wasn't a concern, E55 most def.

That gen E55 is a drift machine in the winter. Perfect amount of power for a RWD of that weight. My favorite winter drifting stories were all in that car. In the wagon you can share the epicness with 2 more people! (it seats 7 right?)

Dat benz though!

Gotta be honest, paul had a passat wagon, it was a pile of junk in typical 10 year old vw style, just think of your corrado.

It's the angle gear and they turn into FWD.

If you're comfortable pulling the unit yourself, you can repair it and not replace it as the dealer would do. Other than that, very solid drive train.

The B5 S4 would be awesome, when it's running...

So would the E55. No clue how keeping one of those on the road would be.

Reading the e55 ad, it seems like a jdm import, which makes me think no block heater, questionable history, etc. Audi is a money pit, and the passat sounds slow based on the numbers I'm seeing. Volvo actually sounds like a reasonable choice...:dunno:

As cool as some of those are, I'd also say the Volvo as the best overall choice. The Passat is cool and unique, but 270 naturally aspirated hp at our altitude sounds a lot less enjoyable than the 300 the Volvo makes.

Go for the volvo or passat, my neighbour has the same passat. Last winter he almost looked offended when I said "awe that sucks, front wheel drive hey" while helping him shovel out the car in 3 feet of snow hahaha "ummm no its 4motion" ... :nut:

Based on descriptions I'd say the V70 or the Passat out of the 4, out of those, based on descriptions + mileage I'd say the Passat, just around 100k kms, lived most of its life in Victoria, supposed 'regular maintenance'.

If it doesn't work out, V70R or W8.

Stage 3 B5 S4 is as much if not more fun then most people say... I still miss mine. (Replaced with B7 S4 and now an ISF, still miss the raw power and sounds)

If sourced correctly you should be able to get the car in running order for less than 5k. Just watch and search either Audizine or Quattroworld for help, then take time sourcing the proper parts. It may take some time, but you will be thrilled with the results. The whole floorpan thing was blown way out of proportion too... it was a simple mistake of not jacking the car at the right spot.

Yep! To be honest, unless its on the track Im not sure its something that you would notice in day to day driving.. unless you drive like a maniac. Then again at $450 or less it may not be a bad way to go. Since Stasis is toast I believe JHM still does it.

Great choice! My S4 is only stage 1 right now and it is a blast to drive. The sound of the turbos spooling is awesome, the awd system is one of the best I've driven and it feels and looks just as nice inside as my mothers 2013 A4.

Congrats!

A good friend of mine used to own a W8 passat sedan. Not sure what exact year it was .. I think 2004. Anyway, I'm pretty sure he will never buy one again. That thing spent more time in the shop than on the road - mind you my friend is not very mechanically inclined, or electrically. I remember him spending thousands of dollars fixing electrical gremlins at a local shop.

Yo some background on that S4 if it's the same one from the thread on eurodrivers..

Went for a look at the car yesterday. Beautiful sight to see in person. From what I could google, it's one of 25 (approximately) 2001 Nogaro on Nogaro and Onyx 6-sp sport pack Avants.

After digging into the specifics of the car, however, the shine wore off.

Spoke with both the current owner and former owner (Colin Andrews) and some inconsistencies appeared.

Cons:

-- 1/2 shift collars, obviously. (Parts on hand tho)
-- CO told my buddy Colin (floater), who was ready to buy it today, that the flashing ABS/ESP lights are "normal for these cars."
-- ABS module was replaced by CA and CurrentOwner says the ABS/ESP lights come on while driving
-- CA mentioned it needs a retune, CO confirmed this has not been done
-- CA mentioned the w/m injection needs adjusting, CO says "it works fine for me"
-- CO insists the BBS CH wheels that came with car are legit, when I knew them to be reps (which CA then confirmed). Not likely to be included as he says he's giving them to his mom for winters. Instead, car comes with (mildly) stagger'd, stretch'd and stance'd TSW Valencia wheels with fresh Nitto rubber.
-- There's a half done stereo system with good components but the install was amateur hour. Gonna take hours of work to fix.
-- Dinoc/CF trim wrap needs attention
-- Low on coolant, not sure why
-- Bent floor pan mod lol
-- CO says a headlight ballast was lost while driving due to poor mounting
-- CO says fog lights don't work, need rewired and new ballasts (IIRC)
-- Battery dead, apparently due to sitting over the winter
-- Dash cup holder is FUBAR
-- Upper dash trim is loose (around the ESP/Hazard buttons)
-- Door locks are sticky, CO says it's due to dead battery. But they're vacuum operated locks...
-- Clean, but could use a detail

Pros:
-- CO says the TB has been serviced very recently, and PS hoses and pump are new. Top end gaskets new.
-- Front bumper was shaved and repainted.
-- Alcantara (doors/seats) is in tip top condition
-- Little things like mirror glass and, armrest and glove box hinges and other interior stuff all seem good.
-- AWE Twin2 made into Twin1
-- Remote starter installed, works with smartphone

He came down in price a couple grand, but honestly... this car has a reputation lol. And it needs more work than he led on. This is a 12k car max, with the winters and a detail, IMO. He sells cars, should be able to source a cheap detail, at least. CA figures no more than 10k as is (without the winters tho).

Hope this helps!

Plenty of aftermarket support for that car to make it as fast or faster than that Audi. With less headache as well.

Drive the Volvo first, I've had a V70R and an S60R -- real, real bad handling cars -- overcautious Volvo oversteer and the safety minded computer over rides everything, all the time.

The Volvo also has a 43.3 ft foot turning radius :-O Worse than an Escalade in parking lots. (39 ft).

Not a veedub guy at all but that Passat does look quite attractive.. But having said that, an 05 Legacy GT Wagon has slightly less power, 1 less cog, is lighter by 500lbs, and therefore faster. Plus hugely better on gas I presume...

Really though all 3 of those cars sound like absolutely money pits.

Fun car, just wanted a change. It was loud, rattly, and getting up there in mileage. It was one of the bigger wagons I've been in. Way more interior room than an A4.

I miss the build quality that comes with a euro import. The guy selling the S4 did a tremendous job of turning me off of the avant, so I'm still looking. I'll probably grab a beater for the meantime.

Nah, because you'll have to contract someone to make all of the new parts for you because they don't exist anymore lol

Volvo V70R/S60R were fun cars at the time...

I have a V50 T5 and I love it...

with that being said, I was looking at the older S60R before I bought mine and I have to say that its fast as fcuk but its handling cannot keep up with it.

Its nice cause its an AWD turbo that can be easily tuned, but it really is still a T5 internal with a different head and turbo setup, and I hear that durability can be a bit of concern.

Of the bunch, you probably will have the least headaches with the E55... but all are going to be costly PITA to fix regardless.

for function, I'd go with a Subaru Outback and maybe even a JDM one if you want an ej25

Subaru Outbacks (especially H6 models) are not cheap to fix.

The TDI I bought is a home run. It's an absolute pin. Zero accident/claim history. Only bummer is it's from out east - but I wouldn't be surprised if it aces the OOPI. No major rust either.

I'm going to wait out this kid with the B5 S4 Avant, see if I can steal it from him. He'll get desperate sooner or later IMO.

What happened when you met him to look at it that turned you off it so quick??

Just talking with the kid over text. He was really good at turning me off from buying the car, only disclosing things wrong with after I pressed and provided statements from the P/O. He then complained about bank drafts and grabbing me from the edmonton greyhound station, so I said fuck it.

There's a good reason nobody has bought it yet - it needs a lot of work and the seller isn't forthcoming.

Tough to compare the price of B7 S4 wagons to A4s , as that S4 will need a $6-10k service in approximately 20,000km. (Full timing chain replacement at 160km)

The wheels on the A4 are fairly expensive.. but not included in the 19,7 price tag. What makes it more expensive than others is the fact that its manual, s-line and titanium. A super rare combo. (Just try to find a manual wagon for sale.. let alone with the other 2 options)

The Volvo would be awesome. My buddy bought one and they are super fun!!! He's a super avid snowboarder and was in the mountains 100% of his time and it never once left him stranded.

Yikes, lots of bad information in that add...

Stagea's were based off of the laurel chassis, not the skyline chassis. It's not a skyline wagon, it's just a stagea. It shared some of its suspension bits with a skyline though.

.

I'm curious, how many 6 cylinder, turbocharged manual wagons were made between say, 1985 and 2005. Were there any that were native to Canada?

The 535xiT is the only one that comes to mind and that didn't appear until 2008.

Otherwise.. Volvo's were 1 cylinder short of your requirement LOL.

Not a bad deal if he could negotiate a bit. Wondering if there's something wrong with it if he wants you to just call.

The B5 allroads in manual were available here, but as mentioned earlier, they are a unicorn.
